The God Pause for Friday, 12 May 2017 at The Luther Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States with the Scripture: John 14:1-14
John 14:1 “Don’t let yourselves be disturbed. Trust in God and trust in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many places to live. If there weren’t, I would have told you; because I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 Since I am going and preparing a place for you, I will return to take you with me; so that where I am, you may be also. 4 Furthermore, you know where I’m going; and you know the way there.”
5 T’oma said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you’re going; so how can we know the way?” 6 Yeshua said, “I AM the Way — and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through me. 7 Because you have known me, you will also know my Father; from now on, you do know him — in fact, you have seen him.”
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it will be enough for us.” 9 Yeshua replied to him, “Have I been with you so long without your knowing me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am united with the Father, and the Father united with me? What I am telling you, I am not saying on my own initiative; the Father living in me is doing his own works. 11 Trust me, that I am united with the Father, and the Father united with me. But if you can’t, then trust because of the works themselves. 12 Yes, indeed! I tell you that whoever trusts in me will also do the works I do! Indeed, he will do greater ones, because I am going to the Father. 13 In fact, whatever you ask for in my name, I will do; so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me for something in my name, I will do it.[Complete Jewish Bible]

It doesn't take a long look at the many depictions of Jesus to realize that our pictures of Jesus are often attempts to create God in our image. The physical appearance of Jesus is elusive. So what comfort can we take in Jesus's words to Philip that if we have seen Jesus we have seen the Father? Much!
Jesus' physical appearance is beyond our grasp, but we can still perceive him. When we remember our baptisms, we see Jesus at work welcoming people into community, forgiveness, mission and eternal life. When we eat bread and drink wine in remembrance of Jesus, we see Jesus' sacrifice for us and for the forgiveness of sin. When we linger with scripture, Jesus is revealed. There is much to be seen of Jesus. In seeing Jesus we are shown the Father who isn't always so easy to observe. In Jesus the mysteries of God become manifest. The love of God becomes palpable. The thoughts and spirit of God become conveyable. As we grow up into Christ those things become more accessible through us as well.
God, continue to reveal yourself to us through Jesus. Continue to grow Jesus in us and reveal yourself to others through us. Amen.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.
4 And you know the way to the place where I am going."
5 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?"
6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
7 If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him."
8 Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied."
9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, "Show us the Father'?
10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works.
