Here are the highlights from this week's news in family caregiving:
For Older Americans Month, let's rethink policies on aging
Next Avenue | May 5, 2017
"May is the annual celebration of Older Americans Month, marked each year with a Presidential proclamation and a range of activities at the national, state and local level to celebrate the success story association with the aging of America. Each year, the federal Administration for Community Living issues a report painting a compelling picture with important societal policy and implications based on recent trends and forecasts for the future."
Many seniors who qualify for home-based care under Medicare aren't receiving it. Why?
PBS | May 3, 2017
"One of the greatest gaps in Medicare coverage is that it does not help pay for home-based care unless such care is requested by a physician as medically necessary. Medicaid will cover such long-term custodial care for people with little to no income or assets, but Medicaid covers fewer than one in five of the roughly 55 million people on Medicare. The nonprofit Center for Medicare Advocacy says it has been research the availability of Medicare-covered home-based care in response to a worrisome and growing volume of complaints from Medicare enrollees that they are being denied home-based care even though they are qualified to receive it and it is covered by Medicare."
These Bluetooth trackers aim to find missing dementia sufferers, quickly
Mashable | May 4, 2017
"A large Japanese security company has an ambitious plan to arm thousands of dementia-stricken elderly folks with a portable, thumb-sized tracker, in hopes of getting them safely home if they get lost. The tags, to be carried by the elderly, will work with a companion app via Bluetooth, which can send location data over to nursing home staff or family members."
'Tough' male family caregivers highlighted in media spots
Forbes | May 2, 2017
"The Tougher than Tough campaign underscores the results of a 2015 study published by AARP showing that 16 million men in America are now caregiving for a loved one. That represents 40% of the 40 million family caregivers of adults in the U.S. The number of men as caregivers has been growing over the last several years, according to a 2015 study in the Journal of Gerontological Social Work, among other reports."
