"Memorial Day: Day 5" for Saturday, 26 May 2018 - goTandem
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us." (Hebrews 12:1)
Why should Memorial Day be important to Christians? Because it provides us time to look back to our great cloud of witnesses, the believers who have gone on before us. And this looking back should motivate us to change. To start stripping off the filthy rags of sin that we swaddle ourselves in. To give ourselves an opportunity to hope and strive for something more. Something bigger. Something grander.
And remember, this cloud of witnesses that we're surrounded by weren't and aren't perfect. They are as human and flawed as you and me. The difference is that they relied on their faith when the chips were down. They acknowledged that they were broken and they needed God.
How does that help us? It provides us with accountability to be true to our calling. It should help us avoid the same mistakes they made. And it shows us what a godly life truly looks like.
So today, remember those heroes of the faith for what they are. Not as spiritual giants, but as people, like you and me. People who ran the same race leaning on God to help them through.
