The Upper Room Daily Devotional from The United Methodist Church in Nashville, Tennessee, United States "Meaningful Work" by Peter Hulu (Yogyakarta, Indonesia) Psalm 37:23-31
A person’s steps are made secure by the Lord when they delight in his way. (Psalm 37:23 (CEB))
After my graduation, I had difficulty finding a job. I went to a town in North Sumatra, but it did not work out; so I went to another town. I sent out application after application, searching for a decent job. I had hoped for an offer from one place in particular, but there was no answer from them.
One month earlier, the college I had graduated from had called me several times asking if I wanted to work there. I had not been eager to accept the offer because the salary was quite small. All this time, I had continued to pray to God to give me a decent job. But I had forgotten to listen for where the Lord was calling me to work. I forgot that longing for God means obeying when God sends me to a place where I can serve.
Now I am working to help the college’s office staff. I firmly believe that the Lord provided a place and work for me, and that the place God chose is the best. Sometimes we imagine a wonderful and remarkable job, but the word of God says, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Prov. 19:21, NIV). When we listen for God’s leading, God can use us to bless others so that we can experience God’s love in new ways.
TODAY'S PRAYER: Thank you, Lord, for showing us the way. Amen.
TODAY'S READING: Psalm 37:
23
Adonai directs a person’s steps,
and he delights in his way.
24 He may stumble, but he won’t fall headlong,
for Adonai holds him by the hand.
25 I have been young; now I am old;
yet not once have I seen the righteous abandoned
or his descendants begging for bread.
26 All day long he is generous and lends,
and his descendants are blessed.
27 If you turn from evil and do good,
you will live safely forever.
28 For Adonai loves justice
and will not abandon his faithful;
they are preserved forever.
But the descendants of the wicked will be cut off.
29 The righteous will inherit the land
and live in it forever.
30 The mouth of the righteous articulates wisdom,
his tongue speaks justice.
31 The Torah of his God is in his heart;
his footsteps do not falter.
 (Complete Jewish Bible).
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
I will let God lead me to meaningful ways to serve others.
