Be patient with everyone. (1 Thessalonians 5:14 (NIV))
***

My husband’s whiskers were all over the sink — again. I was trying to calm down and remember all his good traits. I’m sure he gets upset with me over minor things too. Lynn and I have been married over 47 years. That’s a long time to be with someone.
One day I read the verse above with Paul’s final advice to the Thessalonians, “Be patient with everyone.” The next time I saw the whiskers, I said to myself, “Every time I wake up to whiskers in the sink, I’m going to start thanking God for some little thing my husband does right.” Before I knew it, I’d found so much to be thankful for that now I praise God for those whiskers! I often thank God for giving me Lynn to share my life. I also make sure to tell Lynn how much he means to me.
I’ve decided to do that same thing with people who irritate me. Instead of focusing on the negative, I think of some good thing about them and praise God for that. Maybe if we all become inspired to pay attention to what Paul wrote, gradually this world will become more patient and loving!
TODAY'S PRAYER: Kind and loving God, help us to be patient with everyone we meet today. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
TODAY'S READING: 2 Peter 1:3-11
2 Peter 1:3 God’s power has given us everything we need for life and godliness, through our knowing the One who called us to his own glory and goodness. 4 By these he has given us valuable and superlatively great promises, so that through them you might come to share in God’s nature and escape the corruption which evil desires have brought into the world.
5 For this very reason, try your hardest to furnish your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge, 6 knowledge with self-control, self-control with perseverance, perseverance with godliness, 7 godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if you have these qualities in abundance, they keep you from being barren and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah. 9 Indeed, whoever lacks them is blind, so shortsighted that he forgets that his past sins have been washed away. 10 Therefore, brothers, try even harder to make your being called and chosen a certainty. For if you keep doing this, you will never stumble. 11 Thus you will be generously supplied with everything you need to enter the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Deliverer, Yeshua the Messiah.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Today, I will turn my irritation into praise for God.
PRAYER FOCUS: For patience

Since I wrote today's devotion, Lynn and I have been married 49 1/2 years! After I showed the devotion to Lynn (before I submitted it) he started cleaning up his whiskers, and now I really miss them! But that's my sweet Lynn for you. He is such a caring, loving, and thoughtful man. I am very blessed!
When we were dating I prayed for help making the right decision in marrying, because I knew it would be for a lifetime. Our marriage is definitely "made in Heaven," and we both feel so blessed to have found each other. I think our best advise to newlyweds is have respect and commitment. There will be highs and lows in a marriage, but know that you are committed to the vows you've made. Pray for each other and even as the years go by, hug every day and give each other a kiss before you leave for work and when you get home. God's blessings on you all!
