You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.(Psalm 91:5–6)
History tells of a courageous Christian who was standing before one of the Roman emperors who was persecuting the church. The emperor was demanding that Christians abandon their faith, deny the Lord, and declare Caesar as Lord. But this Christian refused. So the emperor threatened, "Give up Christ, or I will banish you."
The Christian said, "You can't banish me from Christ, for He has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.' "
The emperor said, "I will confiscate all your property."
The believer replied, "My treasures are laid up in heaven. You can't touch them." The emperor said, "I will kill you."
The Christian said, "I have been dead to the world in Christ for forty years. My life is hid with Christ in God. You can't touch it."
The emperor then turned to the rest of his court and said, "What can you do with such a fanatic?"
That so-called fanatic knew something about God's protection. And that is something we all should know about in these frightening times in which we are living. There are so many things we can be afraid of, from getting on a plane to becoming a victim of violent crime to being diagnosed with a life-threatening disease.
It is great to know that God promises, "A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you" (Psalm 91:7). It isn't over until it's over. Until that time, we can go out with boldness, knowing that God is in control of our lives.[Today's devotional is an excerpt from Every Day with Jesus by Greg Laurie, 2013]

A hope-filled lesson from church history on facing fear.

Weekend Bible Reading:
Amos 1:1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdsmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. 2 He said:
“Yahweh[Amos 1:2 “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations.] will roar from Zion,
    and utter his voice from Jerusalem;
and the pastures of the shepherds will mourn,
    and the top of Carmel will wither.”
3 Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of Damascus, yes, for four,
    I will not turn away its punishment;
    because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron;
4 but I will send a fire into the house of Hazael,
    and it will devour the palaces of Ben Hadad.
5 I will break the bar of Damascus,
    and cut off the inhabitant from the valley of Aven,
    and him who holds the scepter from the house of Eden;
    and the people of Syria shall go into captivity to Kir,”
says Yahweh.
6 Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of Gaza, yes, for four,
    I will not turn away its punishment;
    because they carried away captive the whole community,
    to deliver them up to Edom;
7 but I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza,
    and it will devour its palaces.
8 I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod,
    and him who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;
and I will turn my hand against Ekron;
    and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,”
says the Lord[Amos 1:8 The word translated “Lord” is “Adonai.”] Yahweh.
9 Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of Tyre, yes, for four,
    I will not turn away its punishment;
    because they delivered up the whole community to Edom,
    and didn’t remember the brotherly covenant;
10 but I will send a fire on the wall of Tyre,
    and it will devour its palaces.”
11 Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of Edom, yes, for four,
    I will not turn away its punishment;
    because he pursued his brother with the sword,
    and cast off all pity,
    and his anger raged continually,
    and he kept his wrath forever;
12 but I will send a fire on Teman,
    and it will devour the palaces of Bozrah.”
13 Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, yes, for four,
    I will not turn away its punishment;
    because they have ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead,
    that they may enlarge their border.
14 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah,
    and it will devour its palaces,
    with shouting in the day of battle,
    with a storm in the day of the whirlwind;
15 and their king will go into captivity,
    he and his princes together,”
says Yahweh.
2:1 Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of Moab, yes, for four,
    I will not turn away its punishment;
    because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime;
2 but I will send a fire on Moab,
    and it will devour the palaces of Kerioth;
    and Moab will die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet;
3 and I will cut off the judge from among them,
    and will kill all its princes with him,”
says Yahweh.
4 Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of Judah, yes, for four,
    I will not turn away its punishment;
    because they have rejected Yahweh’s law,
    and have not kept his statutes,
    and their lies have led them astray,
    after which their fathers walked;
5 But I will send a fire on Judah,
    and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem.”
6 Yahweh says:
“For three transgressions of Israel, yes, for four,
    I will not turn away its punishment;
    because they have sold the righteous for silver,
    and the needy for a pair of shoes;
7     They trample on the dust of the earth on the head of the poor,
    and deny justice to the oppressed;
    and a man and his father use the same maiden, to profane my holy name;
8     and they lay themselves down beside every altar on clothes taken in pledge;
    and in the house of their God[Amos 2:8 The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim).] they drink the wine of those who have been fined.
9 Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them,
    whose height was like the height of the cedars,
    and he was strong as the oaks;
    yet I destroyed his fruit from above,
    and his roots from beneath.
10 Also I brought you up out of the land of Egypt,
    and led you forty years in the wilderness,
    to possess the land of the Amorite.
11 I raised up some of your sons for prophets,
    and some of your young men for Nazirites.
Isn’t this true,
    you children of Israel?” says Yahweh.
12 “But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink,
    and commanded the prophets, saying, ‘Don’t prophesy!’
13 Behold,[Amos 2:13 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.] I will crush you in your place,
    as a cart crushes that is full of grain.
14 Flight will perish from the swift;
    and the strong won’t strengthen his force;
    neither shall the mighty deliver himself;
15     neither shall he stand who handles the bow;
    and he who is swift of foot won’t escape;
    neither shall he who rides the horse deliver himself;
16 and he who is courageous among the mighty will flee away naked on that day,”
says Yahweh.
3:1 Hear this word that Yahweh has spoken against you, children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt, saying:
2 “You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth.
    Therefore I will punish you for all of your sins.”
3 Do two walk together,
    unless they have agreed?
4 Will a lion roar in the thicket,
    when he has no prey?
Does a young lion cry out of his den,
    if he has caught nothing?
5 Can a bird fall in a trap on the earth,
    where no snare is set for him?
Does a snare spring up from the ground,
    when there is nothing to catch?
6 Does the trumpet alarm sound in a city,
    without the people being afraid?
Does evil happen to a city,
    and Yahweh hasn’t done it?
7 Surely the Lord Yahweh will do nothing,
    unless he reveals his secret to his servants the prophets.
8 The lion has roared.
    Who will not fear?
The Lord Yahweh has spoken.
    Who can but prophesy?
9 Proclaim in the palaces at Ashdod,
    and in the palaces in the land of Egypt,
and say, “Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria,
    and see what unrest is in her,
    and what oppression is among them.”
10 “Indeed they don’t know to do right,” says Yahweh,
    “Who hoard plunder and loot in their palaces.”
11 Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh:
“An adversary will overrun the land;
    and he will pull down your strongholds,
    and your fortresses will be plundered.”
12 Yahweh says:
“As the shepherd rescues out of the mouth of the lion two legs,
    or a piece of an ear,
    so shall the children of Israel be rescued who sit in Samaria on the corner of a couch,
    and on the silken cushions of a bed.”
13 “Listen, and testify against the house of Jacob,” says the Lord Yahweh, the God of Armies.
14 “For in the day that I visit the transgressions of Israel on him,
    I will also visit the altars of Bethel;
    and the horns of the altar will be cut off,
    and fall to the ground.
15 I will strike the winter house with the summer house;
    and the houses of ivory will perish,
    and the great houses will have an end,”
says Yahweh.
Psalm 80: For the Chief Musician. To the tune of “The Lilies of the Covenant.” A Psalm by Asaph.
1 Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,
    you who lead Joseph like a flock,
    you who sit above the cherubim, shine out.
2 Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up your might!
    Come to save us!
3 Turn us again, God.
    Cause your face to shine,
    and we will be saved.
4 Yahweh God of Armies,
    How long will you be angry against the prayer of your people?
5 You have fed them with the bread of tears,
    and given them tears to drink in large measure.
6 You make us a source of contention to our neighbors.
    Our enemies laugh among themselves.
7 Turn us again, God of Armies.
    Cause your face to shine,
    and we will be saved.
8 You brought a vine out of Egypt.
    You drove out the nations, and planted it.
9 You cleared the ground for it.
    It took deep root, and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shadow.
    Its boughs were like God’s cedars.
11 It sent out its branches to the sea,
    Its shoots to the River.
12 Why have you broken down its walls,
    so that all those who pass by the way pluck it?
13 The boar out of the wood ravages it.
    The wild animals of the field feed on it.
14 Turn again, we beg you, God of Armies.
    Look down from heaven, and see, and visit this vine,
15 the stock which your right hand planted,
    the branch that you made strong for yourself.
16 It’s burned with fire.
    It’s cut down.
    They perish at your rebuke.
17 Let your hand be on the man of your right hand,
    on the son of man whom you made strong for yourself.
18 So we will not turn away from you.
    Revive us, and we will call on your name.
19 Turn us again, Yahweh God of Armies.
    Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved.
2 Timothy 4:1 I command you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his Kingdom: 2 preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with all patience and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but, having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts; 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside to fables. 5 But you be sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry.
6 For I am already being offered, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith. 8 From now on, there is stored up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day; and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing. 9 Be diligent to come to me soon, 10 for Demas left me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for service. 12 But I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 Bring the cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus when you come, and the books, especially the parchments. 14 Alexander, the coppersmith, did much evil to me. The Lord will repay him according to his deeds, 15 of whom you also must beware; for he greatly opposed our words.
16 At my first defense, no one came to help me, but all left me. May it not be held against them. 17 But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me, that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear; and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. 18 And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me for his heavenly Kingdom; to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
19 Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the house of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus remained at Corinth, but I left Trophimus at Miletus sick. 21 Be diligent to come before winter. Eubulus salutes you, as do Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers. 22 The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.
Amos 4:1 Listen to this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who tell their husbands, “Bring us drinks!”
2 The Lord Yahweh has sworn by his holiness that behold,
    “The days shall come on you that they will take you away with hooks,
    and the last of you with fish hooks.
3 You will go out at the breaks in the wall,
    everyone straight before her;
    and you will cast yourselves into Harmon,” says Yahweh.
4 “Go to Bethel, and sin;
    to Gilgal, and sin more.
Bring your sacrifices every morning,
    your tithes every three days,
5     offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving of that which is leavened,
    and proclaim free will offerings and brag about them:
    for this pleases you, you children of Israel,” says the Lord Yahweh.
6 “I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities,
    and lack of bread in every town;
    yet you haven’t returned to me,” says Yahweh.
7 “I also have withheld the rain from you,
    when there were yet three months to the harvest;
    and I caused it to rain on one city,
    and caused it not to rain on another city.
One place was rained on,
    and the piece where it didn’t rain withered.
8 So two or three cities staggered to one city to drink water,
    and were not satisfied:
    yet you haven’t returned to me,” says Yahweh.
9 “I struck you with blight and mildew many times in your gardens and your vineyards;
    and your fig trees and your olive trees have the swarming locust devoured:
    yet you haven’t returned to me,” says Yahweh.
10 “I sent plagues among you like I did Egypt.
    I have slain your young men with the sword,
    and have carried away your horses;
    and I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camp,
    yet you haven’t returned to me,” says Yahweh.
11 “I have overthrown some of you,
    as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,
    and you were like a burning stick plucked out of the fire;
    yet you haven’t returned to me,” says Yahweh.
12 “Therefore thus will I do to you, Israel;
    because I will do this to you,
    prepare to meet your God, Israel.
13 For, behold, he who forms the mountains,
    and creates the wind,
    and declares to man what is his thought;
    who makes the morning darkness,
    and treads on the high places of the earth:
    Yahweh, the God of Armies, is his name.”
5:1 Listen to this word which I take up for a lamentation over you, O house of Israel.
2 “The virgin of Israel has fallen;
    She shall rise no more.
She is cast down on her land;
    there is no one to raise her up.”
3 For thus says the Lord Yahweh:
“The city that went out a thousand shall have a hundred left,
    and that which went out one hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel.”
4 For Yahweh says to the house of Israel:
“Seek me, and you will live;
5 but don’t seek Bethel,
    nor enter into Gilgal,
    and don’t pass to Beersheba:
for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity,
    and Bethel shall come to nothing.
6 Seek Yahweh, and you will live;
    lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph,
    and it devour, and there be no one to quench it in Bethel.
7 You who turn justice to wormwood,
    and cast down righteousness to the earth:
8 seek him who made the Pleiades and Orion,
    and turns the shadow of death into the morning,
    and makes the day dark with night;
    who calls for the waters of the sea,
    and pours them out on the surface of the earth, Yahweh is his name,
9 who brings sudden destruction on the strong,
    so that destruction comes on the fortress.
10 They hate him who reproves in the gate,
    and they abhor him who speaks blamelessly.
11 Therefore, because you trample on the poor,
    and take taxes from him of wheat:
    You have built houses of cut stone,
    but you will not dwell in them.
You have planted pleasant vineyards,
    but you shall not drink their wine.
12 For I know how many your offenses,
    and how great are your sins—
    you who afflict the just,
    who take a bribe,
    and who turn aside the needy in the courts.
13 Therefore a prudent person keeps silent in such a time,
    for it is an evil time.
14 Seek good, and not evil,
    that you may live;
    and so Yahweh, the God of Armies, will be with you,
    as you say.
15 Hate evil, love good,
    and establish justice in the courts.
    It may be that Yahweh, the God of Armies, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.”
16 Therefore Yahweh, the God of Armies, the Lord, says:
“Wailing will be in all the wide ways;
    and they will say in all the streets, ‘Alas! Alas!’
    and they will call the farmer to mourning,
    and those who are skillful in lamentation to wailing.
17 In all vineyards there will be wailing;
    for I will pass through the middle of you,” says Yahweh.
18 “Woe to you who desire the day of Yahweh!
    Why do you long for the day of Yahweh?
It is darkness,
    and not light.
19 As if a man fled from a lion,
    and a bear met him;
Or he went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall,
    and a snake bit him.
20 Won’t the day of Yahweh be darkness, and not light?
    Even very dark, and no brightness in it?
21 I hate, I despise your feasts,
    and I can’t stand your solemn assemblies.
22 Yes, though you offer me your burnt offerings and meal offerings,
    I will not accept them;
    neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat animals.
23 Take away from me the noise of your songs!
    I will not listen to the music of your harps.
24 But let justice roll on like rivers,
    and righteousness like a mighty stream.
25 “Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, house of Israel? 26 You also carried the tent of your king and the shrine of your images, the star of your god, which you made for yourselves. 27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus,” says Yahweh, whose name is the God of Armies.
6:1 Woe to those who are at ease in Zion,
    and to those who are secure on the mountain of Samaria,
    the notable men of the chief of the nations,
    to whom the house of Israel come!
2 Go to Calneh, and see;
    and from there go to Hamath the great;
    then go down to Gath of the Philistines.
are they better than these kingdoms?
    or is their border greater than your border?
3 Those who put far away the evil day,
    and cause the seat of violence to come near;
4     Who lie on beds of ivory,
    and stretch themselves on their couches,
    and eat the lambs out of the flock,
    and the calves out of the middle of the stall;
5     who strum on the strings of a harp;
    who invent for themselves instruments of music, like David;
6     who drink wine in bowls,
    and anoint themselves with the best oils;
    but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
7 Therefore they will now go captive with the first who go captive;
    and the feasting and lounging will end.
8 “The Lord Yahweh has sworn by himself,” says Yahweh, the God of Armies:
    “I abhor the pride of Jacob,
    and detest his fortresses.
    Therefore I will deliver up the city with all that is in it.
9 It will happen, if there remain ten men in one house,
    that they shall die.
10 “When a man’s relative carries him, even he who burns him, to bring bodies out of the house, and asks him who is in the innermost parts of the house, ‘Is there yet any with you?’ And he says, ‘No;’ then he will say, ‘Hush! Indeed we must not mention Yahweh’s name.’
11 “For, behold, Yahweh commands, and the great house will be smashed to pieces,
    and the little house into bits.
12 Do horses run on the rocky crags?
    Does one plow there with oxen?
But you have turned justice into poison,
    and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness;
13 you who rejoice in a thing of nothing, who say,
    ‘Haven’t we taken for ourselves horns by our own strength?’
14 For, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, house of Israel,”
    says Yahweh, the God of Armies;
    “and they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath to the brook of the Arabah.”
Psalm 86: A Prayer by David.
1 Hear, Yahweh, and answer me,
    for I am poor and needy.
2 Preserve my soul, for I am godly.
    You, my God, save your servant who trusts in you.
3 Be merciful to me, Lord,
    for I call to you all day long.
4 Bring joy to the soul of your servant,
    for to you, Lord, do I lift up my soul.
5 For you, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive;
    abundant in loving kindness to all those who call on you.
6 Hear, Yahweh, my prayer.
    Listen to the voice of my petitions.
7 In the day of my trouble I will call on you,
    for you will answer me.
8 There is no one like you among the gods, Lord,
    nor any deeds like your deeds.
9 All nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord.
    They shall glorify your name.
10 For you are great, and do wondrous things.
    You are God alone.
11 Teach me your way, Yahweh.
    I will walk in your truth.
    Make my heart undivided to fear your name.
12 I will praise you, Lord my God, with my whole heart.
    I will glorify your name forever more.
13 For your loving kindness is great toward me.
    You have delivered my soul from the lowest Sheol.[Psalm 86:13 Sheol is the place of the dead.]
14 God, the proud have risen up against me.
    A company of violent men have sought after my soul,
    and they don’t hold regard for you before them.
15 But you, Lord, are a merciful and gracious God,
    slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth.
16 Turn to me, and have mercy on me!
    Give your strength to your servant.
    Save the son of your servant.
17 Show me a sign of your goodness,
    that those who hate me may see it, and be shamed,
    because you, Yahweh, have helped me, and comforted me.
Titus 1:1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s chosen ones, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, 2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who can’t lie, promised before time began; 3 but in his own time revealed his word in the message with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior; 4 to Titus, my true child according to a common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.
5 I left you in Crete for this reason, that you would set in order the things that were lacking, and appoint elders in every city, as I directed you; 6 if anyone is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, who are not accused of loose or unruly behavior. 7 For the overseer must be blameless, as God’s steward; not self-pleasing, not easily angered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for dishonest gain; 8 but given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober minded, fair, holy, self-controlled; 9 holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict those who contradict him. 10 For there are also many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11 whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain’s sake. 12 One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, and idle gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. For this cause, reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not paying attention to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn away from the truth. 15 To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. 16 They profess that they know God, but by their deeds they deny him, being abominable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.

WHO IS THE ANTICHRIST?
Revelation 13:1 Then I stood on the sand of the sea. I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads. On his horns were ten crowns, and on his heads, blasphemous names. 2 The beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority. 3 One of his heads looked like it had been wounded fatally. His fatal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled at the beast. 4 They worshiped the dragon, because he gave his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?” 5 A mouth speaking great things and blasphemy was given to him. Authority to make war for forty-two months was given to him. 6 He opened his mouth for blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his dwelling, those who dwell in heaven. 7 It was given to him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them. Authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation was given to him. 8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been killed. 9 If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 If anyone is to go into captivity, he will go into captivity. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, he must be killed.[Revelation 13:10 TR reads “If anyone leads into captivity, into captivity he goes. If anyone will kill with the sword, he must be killed with a sword.” instead of “If anyone is to go into captivity, he will go into captivity. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, he must be killed.”] Here is the endurance and the faith of the saints.
11 I saw another beast coming up out of the earth. He had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke like a dragon. 12 He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. He makes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. 13 He performs great signs, even making fire come down out of the sky to the earth in the sight of people. 14 He deceives my own[Revelation 13:14 NU omits “my own”] people who dwell on the earth because of the signs he was granted to do in front of the beast; saying to those who dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast who had the sword wound and lived. 15 It was given to him to give breath to it, to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause as many as wouldn’t worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, the small and the great, the rich and the poor, and the free and the slave, to be given marks on their right hands, or on their foreheads; 17 and that no one would be able to buy or to sell, unless he has that mark, the name of the beast or the number of his name. 18 Here is wisdom. He who has understanding, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is six hundred sixty-six.
Imitation. Whenever something is popular, whenever something is successful, whenever something is effective you can always be sure there will be imitations. Satan, the ultimate imitator, has cheap imitations of all things that are true. We have real Christians; Satan has fake believers. We have Jesus Christ; Satan will have his Antichrist.
In Revelation 13 we are going to see the Antichrist, history’s vilest embodiment of sin and rebellion, empowered by the devil himself and given authority to reign on the earth for three and a half years, to make war with the saints, and overcome them during that time.
PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES
1. The Antichrist is empowered by Satan himself. 2 Thessalonians 2:9 says, “The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all displays of power, through signs, and
wonders that serve the lie” (NIV).
2. The Antichrist is coming to dominate the globe. Revelation 13:7 says, “Authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation” (NIV). He is going to come as a man of peace a
peacemaker. The Bible says through peace he will deceive many.
3. The devil is going to have a fake resurrection of the Antichrist. Verse 3 reads, “One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast” (NIV). The devil will have a fake version of the death and resurrection of Jesus in the Antichrist, and many will worship him.
4. The Antichrist cannot be revealed until the church is removed from the earth. 2 Thessalonians 2:7–8. The church, through the Holy Spirit, is the restraining force in the world today. We are
 here to stop the spread of evil. We are the light of the world and the salt of the earth. Once the church is removed and the Antichrist emerges, can’t you see people embracing his solutions?
RELEVANT REMINDERS
 • We need to rediscover the church the way Jesus set it up. We need to be aware of any move away from the Word of God as the source of authority, and of any move away from the uniqueness of Christ.
 • There is no other God. The devil is a fallen angel and comes in these last days with religious deception. God’s Word is the antidote to this deception.
 • God knows the future as well as He knows the past. He knew we would sin so He made provision for us by making the decision to send Jesus to earth from the foundation of the world (see Revelation 13:8).
 • You can be an antichrist if you have turned your back on God or are opposing Him by denying that Jesus is the Christ, that He is the only way to God, or by not believing the Bible.
APPLICABLE ACTIONS
Are you waiting for an answer as to who is the Antichrist? I have no idea. Nor does anyone else.
Don’t waste your time speculating who the Antichrist is. Our job is not to look for the Antichrist, but to look for Jesus Christ. That is the emphasis of Scripture. If the coming of the Antichrist is close, then the coming of Jesus Christ for His church is even closer. Look up. Your redemption is
drawing near.

Who is the Antichrist? — I
Revelation 13:1 Then I stood on the sand of the sea. 11 I saw another beast coming up out of the earth. He had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke like a dragon. 12 He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. Many of us have a hazy notion of what the Antichrist will be like. Pastor Greg Laurie helps bring this shadowy figure out into the light. Listen for an eye-opening look at the events of the Last Days as Pastor Greg's study of Revelation continues.

Pastor Greg Laurie points out that there's THE Antichrist, but in the Last Days there will be many who will be anti-Christ - against the Lord. Pastor Greg digs into the book of the unveiling - Revelation - to examine the upheaval during the Tribulation.

THE MARK OF THE BEAST
Revelation 13:1 Then I stood on the sand of the sea. I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads. On his horns were ten crowns, and on his heads, blasphemous names. 2 The beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion.
14:1 I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him a number, one hundred forty-four thousand, having his name, and the name of his Father, written on their foreheads. 2 I heard a sound from heaven, like the sound of many waters, and like the sound of a great thunder. The sound which I heard was like that of harpists playing on their harps. 3 They sing a new song before the throne, and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the one hundred forty-four thousand, those who had been redeemed out of the earth. 4 These are those who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are those who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These were redeemed by Jesus from among men, the first fruits to God and to the Lamb. 5 In their mouth was found no lie, for they are blameless.[Revelation 14:5 TR adds “before the throne of God”]
6 I saw an angel flying in mid heaven, having an eternal Good News to proclaim to those who dwell on the earth, and to every nation, tribe, language, and people. 7 He said with a loud voice, “Fear the Lord, and give him glory; for the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and the springs of waters!”
8 Another, a second angel, followed, saying, “Babylon the great has fallen, which has made all the nations to drink of the wine of the wrath of her sexual immorality.”
9 Another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a great voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead, or on his hand, 10 he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is prepared unmixed in the cup of his anger. He will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 The smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever. They have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name. 12 Here is the patience of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.”
13 I heard the voice from heaven saying, “Write, ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’”
“Yes,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors; for their works follow with them.”
14 I looked, and behold, a white cloud; and on the cloud one sitting like a son of man,[Revelation 14:14 Daniel 7:13] having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle. 15 Another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him who sat on the cloud, “Send your sickle, and reap; for the hour to reap has come; for the harvest of the earth is ripe!” 16 He who sat on the cloud thrust his sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped.
17 Another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven. He also had a sharp sickle. 18 Another angel came out from the altar, he who has power over fire, and he called with a great voice to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, “Send your sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for the earth’s grapes are fully ripe!” 19 The angel thrust his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vintage of the earth, and threw it into the great wine press of the wrath of God. 20 The wine press was trodden outside of the city, and blood came out of the wine press, even to the bridles of the horses, as far as one thousand six hundred stadia.[Revelation 14:20 1600 stadia = 296 kilometers or 184 miles]
The end of the world. We have heard this before. Didn’t Chicken Little have something to say on the topic? We have never been closer to the end of the world than we are right now. Here in Revelations 13, we are looking at spiritually dark times. The Antichrist is on the scene, as well as the false prophet that causes people to worship the Antichrist, and receive the mark of the beast. The Bible also speaks of a new beginning that will take place. A time when righteousness will reign supreme. The knowledge of the Lord will fill the earth. In Revelation 14 we read about the 144,000 messianic believers, sent out by God during this period to proclaim the gospel.
What is true of the 144,000 messianic believers in heaven should also be true of believers on earth. There are five takeaway truths about these believers that we need to be aware of.
PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES
1. They have the mark of God the Father not the Antichrist. These believers have the name of God the Father on their foreheads. They have His mark, and they are protected by God.
2. They sing a new song. Every believer should have a new song. Psalm 40 says, “He lifted me out of the pit of despair. Out of the mud and the mire. He has given me a new song to sing. A hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what He has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord” (NLT).
3. They lived pure lives. “These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins” (Revelation 14:4 NKJV). This may be literal and/or symbolic as well. To not be defiled means they are not immoral.
4. They are sincere in their faith. Revelation 14:5 says, “And in their mouth was found no deceit, for they are without fault before the throne of God” (NIV). There is no deceit or hypocrisy of any kind in their lives. Originally hypocrite meant actor—to act as though you are a Christian, but you are not.
5. They follow the Lamb wherever He goes. In verse 4, Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let Him deny himself, take up the cross, and follow Me” (NIV). Jesus commands us to walk the same road, to follow Him, and do it continually.
RELEVANT REMINDERS
 • You can choose who your father is. You can be of your father the devil, or you can be a worshipper of your heavenly Father. If you are smart, you will choose the name above all names: the Lord Jesus Christ.
 • Stop singing the old song. Sing a new song. Let other people know what Christ has done  for you.
 • Jesus walks with us. He commands us to follow continuously—not just Sunday, but each and every day. It’s a walk. It’s a talk. It’s a fellowship. It’s a companionship.
 • In that day, there will be a mark on those people of the Antichrist. There is a mark on you. God can see it. He knows who belongs to Him. We want to proudly say that we belong to Him.
APPLICABLE ACTIONS
Is Christ living inside of you? Are you ready to go to heaven? The end is near. Christ is coming. And to the point, your end could be even nearer. We don’t know when life will end. That is why we want to get right with God right now.

666. Those are the numbers of the mark of beast. It's a way for the Devil to mark those who are his own. Pastor Greg Laurie points out how challenging it will be for those who don't accept the mark. It's a look at the time of the Tribulation from the book of Revelation.
