Congregation Beth Israel Published Monthly – Volume CLXVI

Elul 5774-Tishrei 5775– September 2014
Dear Friends:
After one of the most emotionally draining and spiritually challenging summers I can remember, it comes as a relief to know that our Jewish year is about to conclude. With the new moon of the month of Elul rising on the horizon comes the promise of the New Year 5775. The spirit found within the Days of Awe will bring the humbling reminder that we are mortal and have limited capacities to find the answers to all of life’s great mysteries. We will contemplate the challenge of being part of a world which remains in a state of “Tohu v’vohu,” the kind of chaos that human beings create. We will pray and reflect that within it all, our task is to do Teshuvah, both collectively and individually to bring wholeness and healing to our broken world.
If you are like me, it feels as if the world has simply gone insane. Our brothers and sisters in the State of Israel continue to recover from the traumatic outcomes brought by Hamas’ barrage of rockets and mortars (well over 3,000 this summer). We cannot even begin to fathom the feelings of being startled out of our sleep by the sounds of sirens.
We can’t imagine the panic of having only seconds to run to the nearest shelter. Thank God we do not directly know the experience of living through days and weeks while our sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, parents, neighbors and friends – active duty and reservists alike – were sent into Gaza to protect our Jewish homeland and the terror of not knowing if they would ever come home. The insanity of this past summer is even more acutely sensed in the faces of the victims of demonic hatred and
brutal slaughter in Syria and Iraq. Like Hamas, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and the Syrian military (and many of the rebels as well) have inflicted unspeakable violence and spread the most insidious evil amongst their own people. The tactics of these groups symbolize pure evil; they care for no one, have no compassion for their own children and wish only to manipulate and dehumanize others in their quest for power and control over others. At home, the events in Ferguson, Missouri, remind us that our country remains deeply divided in so many aspects of our society. In our desire to seek answers, place blame and find meaning, we have all but forgotten the victim and his parents, who lost their son. The events of these past weeks are perhaps a smaller symptom of a greater toxicity in our own society. We have become a civilization with too much senseless violence and insidious hatred. Because these feelings are sensationalized on a daily basis through the culture of “news as entertainment,” we may think that our country is, in many ways, at war within itself. It is within these tragic and unfathomable events, together with our government which is devoid of any genuine,
inspirational and functional leadership, that we may feel helpless, isolated and vulnerable. Can we ever again feel
genuine hope that things will get better and that life, love and peace will ultimately prevail? The reactions, rhetoric and responses to all of these events have left me with feelings of despair. I am disturbed by the hyperbole of those individuals and organizations, which have turned these catastrophic events of human suffering into platforms for grandstanding, fundraising and political opportunism. Collectively, we have not unified in creating a significant opportunity for communal collaboration and thoughtful organizing, but rather have parlayed these tragedies
into opportunities for self-promotion. I feel coerced when I see images and stories of war in Israel within the context of financial solicitation. It is depressing when both within our community and on the national scene we are lacking a unifying voice among our people to organize, respond and act without the explicit financial solicitation, organizational agenda or self
aggrandizement. When some respectable leaders of the international and local Jewish community only share information and ideas which illuminate the aggression of one cause against another – one human being against another - without any genuine substantiation, it diminishes our democracy and our personal resolves. Many of these ideas lack depth, nuance and context and should only remind us that anger begets anger and hatred begets hatred. On Yom Kippur we will say that it is a sin “to use violence to bring about change.” Let us commit in the coming year to not use violence, in any form, to make our point or support our positions. There is both an implicit and explicit threat when we live in a society where no one listens to anyone else’s voice
other than their own and those who agree with them. I, for one, will spend these coming weeks as we prepare for the Days of Awe in contemplation of where I have failed as a rabbi and a Jew, of where I can make a positive and constructive difference for the good and mostly, what we as a congregation can do actively and collectively to bring goodness, justice and peace to ourselves, our community and our world. Michele, Ethan, Gabrielle and Isabel all join me in wishing you and your families a Shana Tova u’Metukah - a sweet, happy and healthy New Year.
