In a parallel passage, Jesus told His disciples,
"Lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already
white for harvest!" (John 4:35). Now the harvest Jesus was
referring to at the time was a particular group of people - the
Samaritans. Which means they were people who would likely be
overlooked by the Jewish religious leaders of the day.
If we don't see the harvest, the number of laborers is
irrelevant. And there's always the danger of overlooking the very
people God wants us to reach. How do we see the harvest? First by
focusing on God and what He wants, rather than focusing on what we want
or our preconceived ideas about who God might be drawing to Himself.
Then that focus will enable us to truly love where God wants us to
love, so that we are looking out for the interests of those He points
out. Finally, that love should shape our dreams and propel us to
achieve them by reaching out and going to those people God brings to
our minds and hearts. Let's look, love and leave our comfort zones as
God sends us into His harvest!
