Clarksville, Tennessee
D. Eugene Wells, superintendent for the Church of the Nazarene's Kentucky District, passed away September 2. He was 63.
Wells was hospitalized in Clarksville, Tennessee, August 29 following a heart attack. In addition to severe blockage in two arteries, he had pneumonia. After several days of improvement, Wells was taken off a ventilator but went into cardiac arrest and never recovered.
He was appointed Kentucky district superintendent in 2010. Wells previously pastored the Science Hill, Kentucky, Church of the Nazarene; East Brainerd Church of the Nazarene in Chattanooga, Tennessee; Macon, Georgia, Trinity Church of the Nazarene; Alexandria, Louisiana, First Church of the Nazarene; and Glasgow, Kentucky, Trinity Church of the Nazarene. He also served as a registered evangelist in Illinois, Georgia, and Kentucky.
"I had the privilege to partner with Rev. Wells in the service to the church over the years and I always appreciated his commitment to the Lord, to the Church, and to the lost," said Gustavo Crocker, general superintendent in jurisdiction for Kentucky. "Whether as an evangelist, a pastor, or as a district superintendent, Gene exhibited the love of God in all of his endeavors. In fact, at the last assembly of the Kentucky District, Gene gave one of the most eloquent messages on the primacy of love. This is who Gene was: A loving servant who passionately proclaimed the love of Christ. We will miss him greatly."
Wells is survived by his wife, Nancy, and their three children: Greg, Justin, and Sarah.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Science Hill Church of the Nazarene. York, Pennsylvania
The Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene in York, Pennsylvania, USA, has sent many Work & Witness teams to the Jamaica East District over the years. This growing relationship led to the development of the EJAM program where teams would not only travel from York to Jamaica, but Jamaica to York.
The Jamaica East District sent its first Work & Witness team to assist the Stillmeadow church in its Mission Week, July 6 through 12. The six-member team served with approximately 55 youths and adults from the Stillmeadow church family.
The team worked with Habitat for Humanity to build a house for a woman and her disabled daughter. The mother currently carries her daughter up four flights of stairs to get in and out of her apartment. The team also prepared meals at the York Rescue Mission to feed the homeless and impoverished of the city.
Additionally, the team visited a home for people with cerebral palsy and helped prepare a fair. The team also cleaned lockers, desks, and chairs at a local high school. Additional activities included beautifying residences for the homebound and a city campus and the surrounding community. Each day commenced and ended with a devotional time where youth shared the Word, prayed, and fellowshipped.
The Jamaican Work & Witness team consider themselves privileged to be used by God and encourage their brothers and sisters to "Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord" (Romans 12:11), as they fulfill the mandate given, to "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 29:19).--Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica Region

Cape Verde, Africa Region
Nazarene Missions International organized a missionary conference to celebrate the impact the Cape Verde church has made and continues to make in Portuguese-speaking communities around the world. District Superintendent David Araujo, Field Strategy Coordinator Daniel Gomis, Cape Verde native General Superintendent Eugénio R. Duarte, and Regional Director Fili Chambo served as speakers and shared on the conference theme, "Let's love as Christ loved us."
The celebration focused on the Cape Verde leaders who serve as pastors and missionaries in the U.S., Africa, Europe, and Brazil. The conference also challenged the church in Cape Verde to reach unreached people on the nation's islands and to partner with the region to send missionaries to other Portuguese-speaking nations in Africa.
Araujo emphasized the need to reach the unreached. He said the district should not lose its passion to reach the lost because there is a wonderful message to share with people in all nations.
Chambo emphasized the need for prayer for the persecuted church and the call to go where the church is not yet in Africa or around the world.
Gomis spoke about the role of the Church of the Nazarene in Cape Verde, in missions, and in Africa. He issued a call for the Cape Verde church to send and support missionaries, and a call to partner with the field and region to develop the church in new areas.
Duarte reminded attendees of the need for clarity of identity and message.
As a result of this conference, 24 people responded to a call to missionary assignment. The district is planning to follow up on these and also to organize a seminar to equip those who sense a call to missions.
On the last day of the event, Antero Fontes was ordained. He was a lay preacher in Dakar, Senegal, for many years and led the first church Gomis attended. The church is now led by Fontes' son. Fontes completed his studies through the extension center in Praia. Both his son and Gomis were able to attend the ordination service.
The assembly also provided a setting for the 32nd Seminário Nazareno de Cabo Verde graduation ceremony. Chambo delivered the event's sermon. This year's class included Paulo Patrick, Edson Dany, Eneida Duarte, and Davidson Oliveira. The graduates have all accepted their first pastorate.--Church of the Nazarene Africa Region

As 2015 approaches, it's not too late to take advantage of an additional contribution for matching funds in the Nazarene 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan account.
Eligible ministers will receive an Annual Pension Supplement (APS) base contribution if their church paid 50 percent or more of its P&B Fund allocation. By paying 100 percent or more of the P&B Fund goal in the 2013-2014 assembly year, ministers will also be eligible for a bonus payment equal to 10 percent of the P&B Fund amount paid. A 50 percent match of personal Nazarene 403(b) account contributions (to a maximum of $250 annually) will be added to accounts of ministers whose churches met their education goals. Matching payments are processed in the first quarter of the calendar year following the year in which the contributions are made.
In addition to meeting the criteria listed above, receipt of this match requires ministers to make adequate contributions to their Nazarene 403(b) Retirement Savings accounts. This means even if a church's P&B and educational payments qualify, the minister or church must make contributions (by salary reduction or salary addition) to the minister's account in order for there to be funds to match. Contributions must be made in the calendar year for which the budget payments are made.
The Retirement Savings Contributions Credit (Saver's Tax Credit) can also lead to savings. Low- to moderate-income ministers contributing to the Nazarene 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan should consider filing Form 8880 to receive this credit for the 2014 tax year. (Note: this credit is currently under review and may not be extended in future years.)
For married ministers filing jointly, the credit can be worth 50 percent of the original contribution (a $2,000 credit for a $4,000 contribution) with a joint adjusted gross income (AGI) in 2014 of $36,000 or less. The credit is worth 20 percent for $36,001 to $39,000, and 10 percent for an AGI at $39,001 to $60,000. Married couples do not qualify for the credit if they earn more than $60,000. For individuals, a credit of up to $1,000 (50 percent of a $2,000 cap) is available. If both spouses make contributions, the total credit on their tax return could be $2,000.
The highest credit is available to those with a lower AGI. For more information, visit the Internal Revenue Service's website, irs.gov.
Whether or not ministers qualify for the Saver's Tax Credit, putting aside money for retirement in the Nazarene 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan account is a good idea. P&B reminds individuals that credit can't be taken if contributions aren't made to accounts in 2014.--Pensions and Benefits USA

Manzini, Swaziland
Southern Africa Nazarene University Vice Chancellor Winnie Nhlengethwa presented His Majesty King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Swaziland with an SANU-branded portrait during the official opening of the Swaziland International Trade Fair 2014.
Mswati attended with his guest of honour, King Goodwill Zwelithini Zulu of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, and they both delivered speeches that encouraged the business community and nation to work harder to improve the Swaziland economy. After the speeches, Mswati toured individual stalls in the 17 different pavilions at Mavuso Trade and Exhibition Center. The CEOs of various companies presented their businesses to the King and outlined their objectives and goals. After touring the stalls, the CEOs were invited to meet the kings at the prime minister's stall in the main pavilion to present gifts to the kings.
Nhlengethwa explained to Mswati what SANU has achieved for the nation by bringing programmes needed for the economy. The king was impressed with Nhlengethwa's presentation, which included humorous portions the king laughed at while visiting the SANU stall. She presented the gift when exhibitors were invited to do so.

Internet access and mobile device utilization are growing at a record-breaking pace across the Asia-Pacific Region. Some studies indicate that the growth of mobile data use on the region is three times that of the rest of the world, creating new opportunities to bring contextualized content to students at Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary.
APNTS professors Darin Land and Mitch Modine addressed this new opportunity by establishing a video resource pilot project. These resources complement already-established on-campus courses, but this is just the beginning.
"We are currently strategizing as to how we can develop a packaged curriculum that would include DVDs, presentation materials, assignments, and quizzes all towards establishing a contextualized Course of Study program that would be relevant across the region," Land said.
The first video resources are for the Introduction to Biblical Studies course.
"Student responses have been good so far," Modine said. "For many of our students, English is not their primary language. This allows them to watch, pause, rewind, and truly understand the material."
The World Mission Communications Asia-Pacific team partnered with APNTS to produce the videos as part of the team's mission to create communications that connect. Technology continues to allow the gospel message and training to go beyond borders and barriers.
Stay tuned for announcements regarding further development in the online training from APNTS.--Church of the Nazarene Asia-Pacific Region
Sharre, Albania
A 10-person team travelled to Albania recently as part of paXan, an annual Work & Witness trip for individuals age 18 to 30 from Nazarene churches in Germany.
From 8 to 18 August, the paXan team served in a Roma community near the main trash dump for Tirana, Albania's capital city. The Roma are descendants of a people group known as Gypsies and live in close-knit communities all over Europe, but are frequently marginalized and treated as second-class citizens.
"As a team we were able to achieve our goal: to show the people in this Roma community on the trash dump that they're valued and loved," said Dennis Lieske, one of the team members. "As 'second-class citizens' they don't usually feel valued or loved. This is also something they find difficult to pass on, even to their children. The kids program we conducted on five mornings, therefore, was an important key to the hearts of these people."
The paXan team did more than play with the kids. In order to demonstrate to families that they are loved and valued, the team worked every afternoon and late into the evenings, digging a well for more accessible drinking water and constructing two latrine facilities in the settlement. In addition, a program including regular after-school assistance for children and vocational training for young adults is in the planning stages.
Vera, who serves as minister to the mission church in this community, was excited about the team's visit, emphasizing how she hoped for 15 years that a group would come to help, and praising God for His intervention and perfect timing. When the latrines were finished and presented to the Roma families on the last evening, their response made it clear they were impressed by the fact that these young people had worked so hard for them all week.
"With a lot of joy and fun at work as a team, by serving and loving our neighbours we were able to reach the hearts of the Roma families and we enjoyed wonderful fellowship together as a team," said Jennifer Mattler, paXan participant.
The trip was a blessing for the team members as well.
"In the end, we learned in particular that we may expectantly wait for God's help," Lieske said. "Not everything turned out the way we had hoped, but we could experience God at work in many ways. And His love and esteem for each individual are far greater than any pile of rubbish!"--Church of the Nazarene Eurasia Region
Guatemala, Mesoamerica Region
A Work & Witness team of 29 members from Greenwood, South Carolina, Community Church of the Nazarene visited Nuevo Visión Church of the Nazarene in north Guatemala in July to bless them through various activities. These included painting and repairing the sanctuary, a medical clinic, and activities with 60 children from the church's Pan Project, a program that provides academic reinforcement and lunch once a week. Activities included puppets, animated Bible classes, and workshops for teachers and the children's guardians.
The 60 children in the program and their families received medical care, medication, and vitamins for parasites and other specific needs.
The group also conducted a day of evangelism and medical clinics in San Miguel Morazan, Tiling, and Chimaltenango, where they fellowshipped with local school children.
Over the four days, doctors examined 275 patients.
Pastor Glen Link was thrilled with the work of the group and said that he expects this to be the first of many missionary trips from his church.
"I am excited that this group, on their first mission trip, thought of Guatemala," said René Rivas, national Nazarene Compassionate Ministries coordinator for Guatemala. "They did a good job, especially the evangelism to children, even with the language difficulty, because only three people in the group spoke Spanish. It was very helpful and a blessing because they were all very loving and committed to follow up the work in the church and the Pan Project."--Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica Region

MidAmerica Nazarene University campus and community members gathered with Associated Student Government leaders for PrayerWalk 2014, an evening of focused prayer.
Faculty, staff, and students, along with trustees, alumni, friends, and area churches, were encouraged to join the campus community to walk the boundaries of the campus August 28 to pray for God's guidance, protection, and blessings for all aspects of the university.
The PrayerWalk began at the Harvest Prayer Sculpture on the campus green at 8 p.m. and proceeded through campus, concluding at College Church of the Nazarene for a closing time of community prayer. Those unable to participate in the walk itself were invited to gather in the College Church sanctuary at 8:15 p.m. to pray and participate in closing prayers.
Prayer walking was a common way for the early Christian church to gather and reaffirm their commitment to God's purposes and to focus on all segments of their community. Often congregations would circle their towns and ask God to be present in the city and in the lives of the people. This practice was suggested in Genesis 14:17, where God said to Abraham, "Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you." Then Abraham departed, walked the land, and built an altar to the Lord.
MNU President David Spittal said the prayer walk is a student-led event that provides an opportunity for community members, alumni, and other friends of the university to join the campus community in an evening of prayer.--MidAmerica Nazarene University

Trevecca Nazarene University's Graduate Counseling Program announced its Issues in Therapy 2014 conference, to be held Friday, October 3 in the convocation center in the Boone Business Building. This year's featured speaker is Scott Stanley, a professor and co-director of the Center for Marital and Family Studies at the University of Denver.
The conference topic, "How Sex, Cohabitation, and the Development of Commitment Impact Lasting Love," explores how premarital sex and cohabitation negatively affect the commitment of a couple and damages homes. As one of the lead researchers for a study funded by The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Stanley will explain what that study revealed about the ways cohabitation and other dynamics affect a couple's development and commitment.
"Dr. Stanley's research explains how premarital sex and cohabitation have long-lasting effects," said Jan Harvey, conference director and clinical coordinator for Trevecca's Graduate Counseling Program. "For the partners, their ability to form the kind of commitment needed for the creation of a lasting marriage is damaged. Because cohabitation is often serial, the children born to serial cohabiting partners often do not develop the ability to attach because the transitions of father figures results in children not being able to find safety in attachment. The whole culture and community is damaged when persons cannot form attachments."
Stanley has co-authored or authored various books, including Fighting for Your Marriage, 12 Hours to a Great Marriage, and The Power of Commitment, and co-authored relationship education curricula such as PREP, Within My Reach, Within Our Reach, and On My Shoulders.
This conference is open to counseling professionals for a registration fee of $100 until Sept. 12; after that date, the registration fee will be $125. The registration fee for clergy and graduate counseling students $50 with a valid student ID, and six CEUs are available. Click here to register.--Trevecca Nazarene University

Olivet Nazarene University announced Athletic Director Gary Newsome will serve on the Board of Directors for the NAIA Athletic Directors Association (ADA). The goal of this newly formed board is to help lead the NAIA into a more productive future, one in which athletic directors are at the forefront. This will include recognizing the accomplishments of members and encouraging professional growth.
"I am honored to have been asked to fill a spot on the NAIA's ADA Board," Newsome said. "I hope I can provide some added insight and direction within our association."
Entering his seventh year as Olivet's athletic director, Newsome will also continue to serve on the NAIA National Administrative Council's Awards and Statistics committee and as the commissioner of the Mid-States Football Association. During his tenure at the helm of the Tigers, Olivet has won five consecutive Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Sports Cups and finished fifth in the NAIA Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings — the highest finish in university history.
One athletic director from each NAIA conference in the country was nominated to serve on the new ADA Board. Throughout the past year, the ADA Executive Committee, along with an ad-hoc advisory board, worked to help the ADA become a more relevant and participative organization. NAIA CEO Jim Carr is receptive to the goal of greater ADA participation in NAIA initiatives, as well as allowing for more opportunity to increase professional development and visibility.--Olivet Nazarene University
