Sunday:
Is hell an English invention?
ROBERT LADD has Sunday's session:
Why do Christians say hell is a fiery place of eternal torture when it’s an invented English word to describe a valley beside Jerusalem?
It's part 2 of a 3-week unit of lessons called Tough Questions About God and the Bible.
I have a book by that title. If you don't have a copy yet, and you want one, let me know. I'll bring some on Sunday.
Bible passages:
Mark 9:42-43
2 Peter 2:4
Matthew 10:28

Colossians 1:20
Mark 9:42 “On the other hand, if you give one of these simple, childlike believers a hard time, bullying or taking advantage of their simple trust, you’ll soon wish you hadn’t. You’d be better off dropped in the middle of the lake with a millstone around your neck.
43-48 “If your hand or your foot gets in God’s way, chop it off and throw it away. You’re better off maimed or lame and alive than the proud owner of two hands and two feet, godless in a furnace of eternal fire. And if your eye distracts you from God, pull it out and throw it away. You’re better off one-eyed and alive than exercising your twenty-twenty vision from inside the fire of hell.
2 Peter 2:4-5 God didn’t let the rebel angels off the hook, but jailed them in hell till Judgment Day. Neither did he let the ancient ungodly world off. He wiped it out with a flood, rescuing only eight people—Noah, the sole voice of righteousness, was one of them.
Matthew 10:28 “Don’t be bluffed into silence by the threats of bullies. There’s nothing they can do to your soul, your core being. Save your fear for God, who holds your entire life—body and soul—in his hands.
Colossians 1:18-20 He was supreme in the beginning and—leading the resurrection parade—he is supreme in the end. From beginning to end he’s there, towering far above everything, everyone. So spacious is he, so roomy, that everything of God finds its proper place in him without crowding. Not only that, but all the broken and dislocated pieces of the universe—people and things, animals and atoms—get properly fixed and fit together in vibrant harmonies, all because of his death, his blood that poured down from the cross.
Upcoming session:
Jim Buffington on 9.21. Why do preachers tell people they have to tithe when the New Testament says that’s an obsolete Jewish law?
Cafe and chewables: Bette and Gary Tranbarger

WHO THE HECK KNEW?
There's a Central UMC in KCMO.
I sent you there, which would really tick off Bette.
Go here instead: 933 Argentine Blvd. KCKS.
Map.
Sorry. It comes from working at the dang desk 12 hours a day all week. I still haven't eaten or fixed the mower. I'm not sure I trust myself with the mower tonight.

LOW BODY COUNT: We need warm bodies in the morning.
We have too many people gone this weekend. And we are serving a meal to the folks at Central United Methodist Church.
I think Bette Tranbarger has recruited a daughter-in-law and some grandkids. Not that this is a signal of desperation.
   Necessarily.
Meet at the Central church at about 10 in the morning and we are done between one and two in the afternoon. Address: 5144 Oak St., Kansas City, MO. Map.
SUBS ARE US. Subway sandwiches will be waiting for us after the 10:45 AM worship service.

Second Sunday Social
COST: $5/person if you're able and willing. Just drop the money into the class offering on Sunday or whenever you can.
We don't normally have a Second Sunday Social the day after we serve food at Central United Methodist Church.
But this time we've got stuff to talk about. Especially the retreat to Hermann. And a short chat about the Sunday morning chewables and coffee we've been offering. We can talk about whether or not to keep offering this bit of food and drink.
That's all I've got.
Now I should eat some supper and fix the mower. The cranking rope broke last time I mowed the yard.
