As many of you know, The UMC lost a prophetic leader, Bishop Martin McLee. His death has shaken the whole church, the New York Annual Conference where he served, and indeed the movement for justice and inclusion for all people. One need only read the various tributes about his life and ministry to recognize the gifts and graces he brought to the Church as a pastor and as an episcopal leader. Both Bishop Mel Talbert and the Rev. Dr. Pamela Lightsey will be attending his Service of Death and Resurrection which is to be held at the Riverside Church in Manhattan on Monday. Bishop Talbert will bring greetings and words of gratitude and Christian love on all of our behalves on Monday. In the meantime, I include the following ancient Christian text from the Requiem liturgy as a meditatio, spoken and sung for centuries, to shape a common prayer and blessing: In Paradisum.
Amen.
May angels lead you, Bishop McLee, into paradise; upon your arrival, may the martyrs receive you and lead you to the holy city of Jerusalem. May the ranks of angels receive you, and with Lazarus, once a poor man, may you have eternal rest. Amen.
