Trinity United Methodist Church Daily Scripture Email Devotion for Thursday, 25 September 2014 "Miracle"
The people ate and were satisfied (Mark 8:8)
This is the story of Jesus feeding the 4,000, or the miracle of the loaves and fish, where Jesus took seven loaves of bread and a few small fish and multiplied it to feed the thousands, similar to God providing manna from heaven to the Hebrews in the wilderness. Right after this story, the Pharisees came to Jesus and "asked him for a sign from heaven." (v.11).
Amazing isn't it? They had just witnessed a most remarkable miracle, a sign from heaven and they didn't or wouldn't perceive it. I'm tempted to say, "Oh, it's because they are Pharisees." But if I'm honest, I'm too often like them: I see God at work in the world and in our church and in my life, and still, with the next new challenge I ask God for a sign?! Are you sometimes like that too? I wonder why we're like that? Is it because life with Jesus is so radically different from normal life that we keep forgetting to see what is right before us?
I dare to believe that God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit are right here with us/me, all around us, me, and I pray: "Give me eyes to see, and a heart to receive, O God."
