Tuesday, 23 September 2014
Dear Friends, Six
things:
1. We are excited to be moving forward with a robust engagement
with local missions/outreach through the Faith Mission (NE 15th
Street, just south of NE 39th Avenue), in partnership with Mt.
Pleasant UMC. To kick off this partnership, we will be having a
"pulpit/choir" exchange with Mt. Pleasant on Sunday,
October 12. Rev. Geraldine McClelland will be preaching at all
three of our services and I'll be preaching there. Very exciting.
And keep watching the Tuesday Word, as there will be frequent and
many ways you can engage in this important mission.
2. Last night we showed the striking renderings of Trinity's
projected Hub/Welcome Center. They are beautiful, and you can
see photos of the future Welcome Center on our website later this
week. We will also have the drawings in the Narthex the next
several weeks, and on the screens in the Worship Center. I'll
begin a low keyed invitation for raising the funds for this
(remember, we already have half of the funds pledged or in hand!),
with the hope that we can start building in the Spring.
3. Check out Trinity's Accessible Playground near the East
parking lot; the last two big structures should be going in before
the end of September, just in time for the Pumpkin Patch (Pumpkins
arrive on September 28!).
4. Financial Peace University begins tonight! If you
can't make tonight, you can start and catch up next Tuesday, 7 pm in
our Education Building.
5. Alpha is one of the best things going - for these three
groups: (1) someone brand new to Christianity and wants to learn the
essentials, (2) someone who wants to refresh their faith and spirit,
and (3) someone who wants to become a part of a neat small
group. Jesus said,
"Go, and make Disciples." He also told us
to go out into the highways and byways and invite people to the
banquet. Alpha is your great opportunity to invite someone to
the most important relationship they will ever know. Let's do
it. It begins next Tuesday, September 30 at 5:30 pm.
6. Would those of you who are taking my class on Making Sense
of the Bible, try to read three additional chapters for tomorrow
night (19, 20, 21); my sense is that we will want/need to spend more
than one session on our last topic, and this will let us move ahead a
bit.
Thanks, God bless, Dan

The most commonly diagnosed communication
disorder in Parkinson's disease (PD) D is hypokinetic
dysarthria which can result in changes in prosody, respiratory control,
voice quality, and articulation. Of these, the disorders in prosody have
been judged to be the most prominent deficit. Prosody includes the pitch,
loudness, and rate with which speech is produced, and is used to
communicate emotional connotation (e.g. angry versus sad). There is currently a study being
conducted by researchers from and the Gainesville VA Brain Rehabilitation
Research Center and the Department of Neurology at the University of
Florida, investigating a treatment targeting increased
pitch and loudness variability as well as control of speech rate, the
core characteristics of prosodic insufficiency in PD, in the context of
the emotional component of the speech disorder. This study is
actively enrolling male and female participants with idiopathic PD between
the ages of 45 and 85. Participants are compensated for all testing and
treatment sessions, and must be able to commit to three weeks of
treatment sessions (2-3 times a week) as well as 2 additional testing
sessions. For more information about this study please contact:
Susan A. Leon, PhD, CCC-SLP (352) 376-1611 x 5059 or by email.
We will be starting a Bereavement
Support Group, which is open to all any anyone who is
dealing with loss of a loved one. The meetings started September 10
and continue for 13 weeks in room 226 from 6:30 to 8 pm We will be
using materials from Grief
Share which involves a DVD and an accompanying
workbook. Contact is Richard Quackenbush or call him
at 352-519-5282.
