Sunday's Scripture:
Matthew 21:33-46
Matthew 21: The Story of the Greedy Farmhands
33-34 “Here’s another story. Listen closely. There was once a man, a wealthy farmer, who planted a vineyard. He fenced it, dug a winepress, put up a watchtower, then turned it over to the farmhands and went off on a trip. When it was time to harvest the grapes, he sent his servants back to collect his profits.
35-37 “The farmhands grabbed the first servant and beat him up. The next one they murdered. They threw stones at the third but he got away. The owner tried again, sending more servants. They got the same treatment. The owner was at the end of his rope. He decided to send his son. ‘Surely,’ he thought, ‘they will respect my son.’
38-39 “But when the farmhands saw the son arrive, they rubbed their hands in greed. ‘This is the heir! Let’s kill him and have it all for ourselves.’ They grabbed him, threw him out, and killed him.
40 “Now, when the owner of the vineyard arrives home from his trip, what do you think he will do to the farmhands?”
41 “He’ll kill them—a rotten bunch, and good riddance,” they answered. “Then he’ll assign the vineyard to farmhands who will hand over the profits when it’s time.”
42-44 Jesus said, “Right—and you can read it for yourselves in your Bibles:
The stone the masons threw out
    is now the cornerstone.
This is God’s work;
we rub our eyes, we can hardly believe it!
“This is the way it is with you. God’s kingdom will be taken back from you and handed over to a people who will live out a kingdom life. Whoever stumbles on this Stone gets shattered; whoever the Stone falls on gets smashed.”
45-46 When the religious leaders heard this story, they knew it was aimed at them. They wanted to arrest Jesus and put him in jail, but, intimidated by public opinion, they held back. Most people held him to be a prophet of God.
John Wesley
s Notes-Commentary:
Matthew 21:33-46
Verse 33
[33] Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:
A certain householder planted a vineyard — God planted the Church in Canaan; and hedged it round about - First with the law, then with his peculiar providence: and digged a wine press - Perhaps it may mean Jerusalem: and built a tower - The temple: and went into a far country - That is, left the keepers of his vineyard, in some measure, to behave as they should see good. Mark 12:1; Luke 20:9.
Verse 34
[34] And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.
He sent his servants — His extraordinary messengers, the prophets: to the husbandmen - The ordinary preachers or ministers of the Jews.
Verse 41
[41] They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
They say — Perhaps some of the by-standers, not the chief priests or Pharisees; who, as St. Luke relates, said, God forbid, Luke 20:16.
Verse 42
[42] Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
The builders — The scribes and priests, whose office it was to build up the Church.
Is become the head of the corner — Or the chief corner stone: he is become the foundation of the Church, on which the whole building rests, and is the principal corner stone, for uniting the Gentiles to it, as the chief corner stone of a house supports and links its two sides together. Psalms 118:22.
Verse 43
[43] Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.
Therefore — Because ye reject this corner stone.
The kingdom of God — That is, the Gospel.
Verse 44
[44] And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
Whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken — Stumblers at Christ shall even then receive much hurt. He is said to fall on this stone, who hears the Gospel and does not believe.
But on whomsoever it shall fall — In vengeance, it will utterly destroy him. It will fall on every unbeliever, when Christ cometh in the clouds of heaven. Luke 20:18.

What's World Communion Sunday?
This Sunday, as we observe World Communion Sunday, we remember that in sharing the sacrament of communion, we share at a table that stretches all around the world. The communion table is prepared by Christ--what we do here in our church building connects to something far bigger than we can imagine. It includes friends and enemies, and people we don't even know; it stretches across political boundaries and cultural barriers.
Our own actions and practices are so often limited by our own biases and experiences and assumptions; in sharing in the sacrament of communion, we are lifted above these limitations, honoring that the grace we receive is not one we earned. In sharing it, we get a glimpse--or, better, a taste--of the world God is making possible through grace.
On this World Communion Sunday, our music will be unusual--we'll worship in a calypso style, with steel drums and all; it's one small way to remind ourselves that the church we are a part of, and the sacrament we share in, doesn't belong to us alone, or to our traditions or styles. It all belongs to God.
grace and peace,

Rummage Sale by Bob Peterson
If you are reading this Sunday or later, you either attended our church Rummage Sale to work, shop or eat at Friday noon's Naomi Cafe or missed it. On Sunday you will hear the report on the successes of our bi-annual Rummage sale which helps the UMW women of our church fund their charities and church support. Also, if you missed out, you will have to wait until 2015 for the next Rummage Sale put on by the women of our church UMW, The United Methodist Women.
Our Rummage Sales have been such a huge part of this church that I can safely report it involves more members and non-members of our congregation than any other activity with the possible exception of Worship services. If you are a man you are invited to help out. If you are a student, you are invited to help. If you are a woman, you just help do the work because you need to be with your Christian friends.
Shoppers will begin making purchases Friday morning at 9:00AM, having lunch at noon and closing at about 4:00PM. Saturday's shoppers will get their best buys at $4.00 per shopping bag with an all you can get in the bag sale. The Sale will end Saturday at Noon with what I call, The Great Clean-up, as many helpers of all ages get the unsold stuff ready for donating to an organization which helps the homeless. Almost all of the material is sold or used by someone who needs it.
What a nice project that Rummage Sale is. We should not only thank all who participate, but also Shirley Sommer who has worked as the Rummage Queen for so many years. She reports that this will be her last one to head, but she will help as her health and body permits. Thank her for this service to our church and to God for lo, these many years. She deserves much praise and thanks from all of us.
