Laity Sunday
8:30am
in the Epworth Lounge9:30am Animate: Bible study in May Day Parlor 10:30am in the Sanctuary Sunday's Scripture:
Matthew 22:15-22
Scripture Text:
Matthew 22:Paying Taxes
15-17 That’s when the Pharisees plotted a way to trap him into saying something damaging. They sent their disciples, with a few of Herod’s followers mixed in, to ask, “Teacher, we know you have integrity, teach the way of God accurately, are indifferent to popular opinion, and don’t pander to your students. So tell us honestly: Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
18-19 Jesus knew they were up to no good. He said, “Why are you playing these games with me? Why are you trying to trap me? Do you have a coin? Let me see it.” They handed him a silver piece.
20 “This engraving—who does it look like? And whose name is on it?”
21 They said, “Caesar.”
“Then give Caesar what is his, and give God what is his.”
22 The Pharisees were speechless. They went off shaking their heads.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary:
Matthew 22:15-22
Verse 15
[15] Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.
Mark 12:13; Luke 20:20.
Verse 16
[16] And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
The Herodians were a set of men peculiarly attached to Herod, and consequently zealous for the interest of the Roman government, which was the main support of the dignity and royalty of his family.
Thou regardest not the person of men — Thou favourest no man for his riches or greatness.
Verse 17
[17] Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
Is it lawful to give tribute to Cesar? — If he had said, Yes, the Pharisees would have accused him to the people, as a betrayer of the liberties of his country. If he had said, No, the Herodians would have accused him to the Roman governor.
Verse 18
[18] But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
Ye hypocrites — Pretending a scruple of conscience.
Verse 20
[20] And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription
The tribute money — A Roman coin, stamped with the head of Cesar, which was usually paid in tribute.
Verse 21
[21] They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.
They say to him, Cesar's — Plainly acknowledging, by their having received his coin, that they were under his government. And indeed this is a standing rule. The current coin of every nation shows who is the supreme governor of it. Render therefore, ye Pharisees, to Cesar the things which ye yourselves acknowledge to be Cesar's: and, ye Herodians, while ye are zealous for Cesar, see that ye render to God the things that are God's.

Maybe you know the children's song by heart:
"The church is not a building. The church is not a steeple. The church is not a resting place; the church is the people! I am the church, you are the church, we are the church together..."
I think of that beautiful reminder as I think about the rich gifts of our church community, and the ways they are so often and so lovingly used in service to God and others. Much of it happens out of my view--the ways you look in on each other in times of need, the ways you care for others in your workplace or neighborhood, the projects and programs you are a part of that seek to offer compassion and care in the world. Other things are visible because they happen here at church: the dedicated folks who pick up donations for Shared Bread, who prepare and who clean up afterwards. The volunteers who make our finance office work - writing checks, recording donations, balancing our books. The adults who help with our young people.
It's such a privilege to get to be your pastor--to see and support your love in action and your gifts at work. I celebrate your service.
Occasionally, though, I find out about some incredible gifts that you have that I didn't know about--interests shared among several of our church, or skills and talents that could be put to work for amazing things. I dream of what would be possible if we all could find ways to use our finest gifts for the sake of the loving work God invites us to. This Sunday, our Membership Committee is inviting us to "Check Into Church," with a questionnaire described below. I hope you'll "check in!"
grace and peace,

THIS Sunday, October 19, we celebrate Laity Sunday, an occasion to celebrate the multitude of ways we are in ministry through our lives, our work, our families and community.
Join us as we share in special prayers and blessings for the ministry we all share.
(We will also receive new church members during worship on the 12th.)
On the 19th, our Membership Committee will be inviting us to "Check Into Church" with a survey that will give everyone a chance to let us know what skills and gifts they have to share in the ministries and life of our church. Watch for ways to participate in person or online! Check Into Church NOW! (Don't wait till Sunday.)The heart of Christian ministry is Christ's ministry of outreaching love. Through our baptism, we are called to express this love through acts of witness, service, celebration and discipleship. [Book Of Discipline, ¶126]. To help us do this, the Membership Committee is asking you to Check into Church throughthis questionnaire. It'll only take a few minutes to complete and there's a fun "Bonus" question at the end! Be sure to stop by our booth during our Social Hour on Sunday so we can reward you for Checking Into Church! If you want assistance completing the questionnaire, some of the committee members and staff will be available at this same time on Sunday to assist you. |
Worship Through Community Service!Join in a church team at the
Friendship Walk on Sun, October 26:
This year, we are gathering a church team of walkers to participate in the Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, which raises funds for Friendship Circle's programming for kids with special needs, as well as for the educational foundations in our beach cities.Because it's on Sunday morning, we'll meet up for a prayer before we begin, and walk together as community service worship. (There will not be children's Sunday School that morning--Katherine and Lisa will be leading our team!) Other UM churches in our El Tordondo Mission Area are walking, as well--sign up or make donations online! |
Last Sunday's worship and potluck gave us an opportunity to meet and welcome new members and staff. We are so grateful for the continued growth and enthusiasm of our Redondo Beach First church family.

The Lay Looker, Bob Peterson
a view from the pew from a longtime member of our church
"Last Sunday's all-church pot-luck luncheon was well attended with about 100 sitting at tables enjoying the wonderful food brought by everyone. As pot-lucks go, this was one of the better ones held this year with special cakes and desserts available as we welcomed and honored new staff members Jim, Carolyn and Stephen into the church staff. Jim is the Music and Choir director and I must say, the choir's rendition of "In This Very Room" was performed better than any time I have ever heard it. The pianissimos were absolutely beautiful as was the entire song, one of the choir's favorites. Our choir has a few newcomers and they seem to be fitting in very well so far..."

"A Welcoming Church" by Bob Peterson Last Sunday's all-church pot-luck luncheon was well attended with about 100 sitting at tables enjoying the wonderful food brought by everyone. Our choir has a few newcomers and they seem to be fitting in very well so far. We also welcomed Carolyn, our new church organist and I must tell you of a unique connection she and I have. In visiting with Carolyn, I discovered that I had played in the orchestra pit here at the Redondo High School Auditorium in light opera musicals in the 1950s and 1960s while her mother sang solos on stage. Even though the third honoree last Sunday was far more interested in his young students, our church Junior and Senior High School members, Stephen did get to visit and meet several of us seniors (the older types) and we visited a bit while the young ones waited patiently for their time. All of the above three new staff members have big shoes to fill, lots to learn about our church and will be meeting our congregation (you and I) in the coming weeks this fall. Please help them do their jobs and support them as they get their feet wet, so to speak. Here's an incident from last Sunday: When I met Stephen he looked at me and asked what do I do around our church. As a long time member (since 1950) I got to thinking and in addition to this epistle every other week, I help with greeters, money counting, bible study, the twice a year Rummage Sale, and worship with you readers each Sunday. Perhaps I should be thinking about doing more for our church. Perhaps you should think about how you can help us become better at being a welcoming church so that newcomers are impressed enough to come back for another visit. We will become a growing church if everyone does their best to help us succeed. |
