San Diego First United Methodist Church’s Daily Devotion for Monday, 13 October 2014 – Sunday, 19 October 2014 - Sermon theme: See What Love Is - Sanctifying Grace by Craig Brown Text to read: Romans 6:8-14
Scriptures:
Romans 6:6-11 Could it be any clearer? Our old way of life was nailed to the cross with Christ, a decisive end to that sin-miserable life—no longer at sin’s every beck and call! What we believe is this: If we get included in Christ’s sin-conquering death, we also get included in his life-saving resurrection. We know that when Jesus was raised from the dead it was a signal of the end of death-as-the-end. Never again will death have the last word. When Jesus died, he took sin down with him, but alive he brings God down to us. From now on, think of it this way: Sin speaks a dead language that means nothing to you; God speaks your mother tongue, and you hang on every word. You are dead to sin and alive to God. That’s what Jesus did.
12-14 That means you must not give sin a vote in the way you conduct your lives. Don’t give it the time of day. Don’t even run little errands that are connected with that old way of life. Throw yourselves wholeheartedly and full-time—remember, you’ve been raised from the dead!—into God’s way of doing things. Sin can’t tell you how to live. After all, you’re not living under that old tyranny any longer. You’re living in the freedom of God.

John Wesley’s Notes-Commentary:
Romans 6:8-14
Verse 8
[8] Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
Dead with Christ — Conformed to his death, by dying to sin.
Verse 10
[10] For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
He died to sin — To atone for and abolish it.
He liveth unto God — A glorious eternal life, such as we shall live also.
Verse 12
[12] Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Let not sin reign even in your mortal body — It must be subject to death, but it need not be subject to sin.
Verse 13
[13] Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Neither present your members to sin — To corrupt nature, a mere tyrant.
But to God — Your lawful King.
Verse 14
[14] For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Sin shall not have dominion over you — It has neither right nor power.
For ye are not under the law — A dispensation of terror and bondage, which only shows sin, without enabling you to conquer it.
But under grace — Under the merciful dispensation of the gospel, which brings complete victory over it to every one who is under the powerful influences of the Spirit of Christ.

Sermon Story "From Bondage to Freedom" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 19 October 2014
Text to read: Romans 6:6-11 Could it be any clearer?
Wow! Do you hear waht the Apostle Paul is saying to the church in Rome and us? He begins to share that at one time sine reigned in our lives. Now, he says that if we have been fully inlcuded and accepted into Jesus by His death and resurrection, we are free from the sin in our lives and we live as resurrected people. There is something about giving one's life fully over to Jesus through the repentance of our sins that cleans us up. It is not that we clean ourselves up, but it is through the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus we are cleaned up by the Holy Spirit. Too often, we think that this is just for the next life that will get us out of Hell, but this is for today to live as Jesus lived in loving and serving all other people in everything we do and say. We have been given this freedom to live in a loving, Godlike way in our lives towards our family, neighbors, friends, and all people we come in contact with at work, school, church, and shopping. How do you relate to this freedom God has given? How do you understand what God has done for you through His Son's birth, life, suffering, death, and resurrection? How will yo live this week in the freedom God has given you through His Son, Jesus, by His Grace and Love?
