Trinity United Methodist Church Daily Scripture Email Devotion for Thursday, 16 October 2014 "I am One"
Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name - the name that you gave me - so that they may be one as we are one (John 17:11 ).
This entire chapter 17 is known as The High Priestly prayer of Jesus, where he prays for his disciples, then and now and in the future. He prays for our protection and for our unity.
Why is unity so important to Jesus? The answer is found in v. 11 above: Because He and the Father are one. Here we're seeing the beauty of the Trinity in its most sacred intimacy; this prayerful interaction among the two persons of the Trinity; three yet one. And that unity is huge; it's essential.
As is the unity of Jesus's followers, something the church hasn't done terribly well at over the centuries, but which we all must pray for.
