Prayer ~ Changes Things!

"Generosity Unlimited" is the theme for this year's Thanksgiving Offering. It is much more than a
monetary offering; it is a lifestyle of those who are Christlike disciples!

In Jonah 2, Jonah offers a song of thanksgiving to Godwhile he is in the belly of the fish. What
connections do you see between thankfulness, humility, faith, and God's saving action? How can
thankfulness have an impact on the rest of today?

Jonah 2:7-10
As my life was ebbing away,
 I remembered the Lord;
and my prayer came to you,
 into your holy temple.
Those who worship vain idols
 forsake their true loyalty.
But I with the voice of thanksgiving
 will sacrifice to you;
what I have vowed I will pay.
 Deliverance belongs to the Lord!"
Then the Lord spoke to the fish, and it spewed Jonah out upon the dry land.~
Is God calling you to be thankful in the situation you are in? Imagine the impact your thankfulness could have!

4 "Must Haves" for Any Organization
Walls are walls! Not necessarily.

Some walls can be removed without jeopardizing the integrity of a structure. For example, a wall may be removed to make a small area seem larger. But before home improvement contractors will remove a wall, they will first determine if the wall is a "load-bearing wall." If it is, it stays.
Every organization has "load-bearing walls" that provide its basic support-principles that give integrity to the organizational house. Their purpose is not to keep people in or out, it is to keep them (and the organization) safe, and to make sure the house is structurally sound.
There are at least 4 load-bearing walls that your organization MUST HAVE.
1. Mission
The wall of Mission is the organization’s declared direction of its ideas and resources. Born in your mind, or that of another founder, the mission is the basic premise, the unique reason for the organization’s existence among other organizations. Everything that is done under the roof of your brand begins and continues its day from that location.
2. Vision & Values
The Vision & Values wall is your written or unwritten policy of beliefs and practices. A mission may be written in the by-laws or displayed in the lobby of your headquarters, but if it isn’t on display by the actions of the organization’s members, it’s just words.
3. Strategic Objectives
The Strategic Objective wall is your milestone wall, marking your progress and planning your future. It is like the yardstick marks on a wall or doorway of a house that measures the growth of children in that household (and often compares it to the growth of other children). In the case of an organization, the growth marks may be envisioned as well as actual, but the purpose is the same—motivating or recording scheduled organizational progress.
4. Service
The wall of Service is your personal or corporate commitment to excellence. It reflects policies or procedures you have created for your organization that are intended to build brand loyalty. It’s the organization’s attitude and actions that purposefully recognize the worth of customers and constituencies.
“Load-bearing walls” don’t just appear like an object from a magic act, they are created and blueprinted. And you are the contractor/leader. Shoddy building will make them weak from the start. Careful planning will make them sturdy enough to withstand the winds of change and the storms of time.(Stan Toler)

When most people hear the term "Community Based Health Care" (CBHC), visions of mobile clinics, vaccinations, and children and mothers lined up for exams probably come to mind. Nazarene Community Based Healthcare is so much more! “We believe that spiritual transformation is the foundation of all other transformation,” explains Matthew Galman,  CBHC Coordinator for Melanesia. “When a person is transformed spiritually, then his/her mind will change along with their emotions and physical body.  This is what health is all about, it is not just absence of sickness, but a total wellness of the Physical, Spiritual, Emotional and Social aspects of a person.”
Just recently, pastors, women and husbands from several local churches in the Highland’s District, invited CBHC to come and lead a three day training on Moral Values.
CAM00538It was a time of reflection and restoration, where wives and mothers reflected upon their lives and celebrated the future that God has for them.  The training began in the book of Genesis,  and then incorporated holistic approaches to health, elevating the physical, spiritual, social and emotional health of the women so that they have equal dignity in their households and society.
In many Melanesian cultures, women are viewed as the property of their husbands.  Their worth is defined by their husbands, and their only job is to take care of all the household needs and bear and raise children.
Nazarene CBHC, through training such as the Moral Values Training, is helping to alter this mentality that has been passed down from generation to generation.  “A mentality that has stood like a strong wall that cannot be broken, one that has been affecting many women and sickening the health of the society,” says Galman.
CAM00522
The training is having a major impact on the communities.  “It is a very challenging moment for Christian husbands,” explains Galman. “Many of them repent and enter into reconciliation with their wives and Christ.  Even though they are not physically sick, they realize that they need a total change and transformation, which can only come from the great physician, our Lord and Savior. ”
Nazarene CBHC is now being asked to return and do follow up training so that the community can change and see each other through the eyes of God!
“It is our prayer that God will help us to break down the walls…that our place will be a better place where people will be transformed holistically and live a healthy life with fullness and live in harmony with one another and with God,” says Galman.
Please continue to pray for the Nazarene Healthcare Ministries of Melanesia and the South Pacific.  Lives are being changed for eternity!(Submission: Matthew Galman, CBHC Coordinator – Melanesia)

Many of the families who formerly had homes in the low laying areas close to the ocean, find that these locations are now NO BUILD ZONES.  Not being allowed to re-construct their homes, the families have been staying in tent cities and little by little are being transferred to Transitory Sites or Transitory Shelters.

NDR is partnering with the government agencies (DSWD) and helping to stand in the gap for those in greatest need.  The last week of September,  Psycho-Social and Psycho-Spiritual programs and activities were initiated, focusing on adults and children alike.

Presently, NDR has team members in 4 of the 5 transitory sites and is working on establishing a presence in 3 additional sites.  The teams began ministering to more than 360 families and that number continues to grow.
The NDR teams are facilitating activities and initiatives in the areas of greatest need as mentioned earlier.  From board and ball games, to counseling, Day Care Center Programs and now Bible studies, lives are being touched and transformed.
“We are so thankful to have the Church of the Nazarene through Nazarene Disaster Response, giving their time and effort.  It is allowing us to have ‘color’ to our lives again,” said Ruby,  a mother and community leader within one of the transitory sites.
“Through the programs of NDR, there is an open door for us to share Christ to these families and to help them see the real message of hope that comes through the Word of God,” said Pastor Natividad, Philippine Nazarene Disaster Reponse Coordinator.  “Though we see the many challenges, we see these challenges as opportunities to minister and bring these souls to Christ.”

Questions in the Upper Room...
Southeast Asia Field
Questions in the upper room were the order of the day as a group of pastors and pastoral students gathered for another class in the Course of Study in one of our creative access areas.
A mixture of men, women, teens and middle aged students gathered in a country where even holding the classes is still technically illegal.
The local pastor, whose home hosts the class, reaches out to the children of his community offering free tutoring in math and science and helping them with their home work.
Growth is slow in this country but steady and the new batch of 14 students promises good things for the Gospel in the years to come.
Please continue to pray for those who are working and serving in areas closed to the open expression of the Gospel.(Submitted: David Phillips – FSC)

Compassionate Nazarenes; that's who John Watton, Asia-Pacific Region Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Coordinator, is looking for.
John has a vision to help local Nazarene members realize their capacity to show love to their communities.  New to Asia and the Pacific, John took an inital tour of the Southeast Asia Field the first week of November.
In Phnom Penh, John found a newly opened dorm for young ladies coming from the province to go to college. This dorm safely houses them while they study. While staying at the dorm, these ladies will also receive tutoring in computers and English, and are an active part of the Phnom Penh church plant.

The need to provide safe housing for young people coming to the city for college was a desire and concern expressed by Cambodia District leadership. This desire and concern came together with the passion of Ko, Seong-Chul and his wife, Kim, Yoon-Jong, team members from Korea who are working to find creative ways to help young people in Cambodia. The dorm is modeled after similar dorms in Phnom Penh and in a creative access area.
Through this Nazarene Compassionate Ministries project, young ladies are being given a place of safety and training.  In turn, they are taking the hope and peace that comes through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior to the streets, sharing stories from the Bible with the children of the neighborhood and leading a high school neighbor to Christ!   That neighbor now attends the church plant in Phnom Penh!
You see, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries is much more than just doing projects of compassion; it’s opening doors and making way for Kingdom Impact!(Submitted: David Phillips, Southeast Asia FSC)

When the Vanuatu Nazarene Evangelism Team gathered to pray for a movement of the Holy Spirit, little did they know just how God was going to move!
“Be olgeta we oli glad long hem [Jisas], mo oli bilif long hem, hem i givim raet long olgeta blong oli kam pikinini blong God.”
Jon 1:12, Baebol long Bislama
“But whoever did want him [Jesus], who believed he was who he claimed and would do what he said, He made to be their true selves, their child-of-God selves.”
John 1:12, The Message
pacific-mapSeven years earlier, a Work and Witness Team from the USA assisted in showing the JESUS Film in this area called Black Sand.  There had been many technical difficulties at that time and once again, as the Vanuatu Nazarene Evangelism Team prepared for an outdoor revival at the Black Sand Nazarene Church, they were plagued with technical challenges to be overcome.
The church had no electricity to offer for the outdoor campaign and when Pastor Gideon asked another family who did have electricity, they said it would cost at least $100 for the 3 nights!   Another pastor from the local area, saw the need and met the need, providing the power necessary to run lights, keyboard, and speakers.
As the revival began, people from the community started coming.
“We could count more than 100 the first night, but we knew there were many more who stood in the shadows or behind fences, or just inside their nearby homes, ” said Sylvia Potter, team member in Vanuatu. “They listened to the messages that proclaimed the good news that our lives can change through the power of Jesus Christ living in us.”
Each night more than fifty people came forward during the invitation to pray, and more than 75 people came forward on Sunday night to ask Jesus to forgive them and come into their hearts for the first time. In addition, more than 50 came forward to pray about other concerns.
Many of the people who came to the revival services, would never step foot inside a church.   Sylvia prayed with one lady on Saturday night who told her that she wanted to come to the church for a long time, but didn’t feel like she could.  This lady prayed for God to forgive her and to come into her life. The next morning she and her three children came and worshiped at Black Sand Nazarene Church!
DSC00671What is so incredibly exciting is that this is the local church and district reaching out to their local community!  The Vanuatu Nazarene Evangelism Team is a demonstrated great step forward in maturity.
“This is the first time that anyone other than Nazarene missionaries have organized such an event for the Church of the Nazarene,” exclaimed Pastor Peter Isaac, Vanuatu District Superintendent.
We praise the Lord for those who have been rescued from the dominion of darkness and have been brought into the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ! Please continue to pray for the Evangelism Team as they prepare to hold a crusade this December in the area of Etas, where we have no established churches.  Please pray that many people will be saved from their sin and will be brought into the fellowship of the body of Christ where they can be encouraged and discipled in their new life of faith.(Submitted:  Pastor Peter Isaac, David & Sylvia Potter,)
Asia-Pacific Region
During the recent Regional Advisory Council meetings in South Korea, the council adopted nine regional priorities.  We will be featuring one of these priorities each week over the course of 9 weeks.
Cohesive Education / Ministerial Preparation involves the establishment of an integrated Nazarene educational system across the Region that facilitates the training and qualification of Nazarene leaders, both clergy and lay.
REGIONAL PRIORITIES
Ongoing Discipleship / Intentional Leadership Development  / Cohesive Education & Ministerial Preparation / Communication that Connects / Church Multiplication and Expansion / District Development / Member Care / Purposeful Compassion / Operational Effectiveness
Understanding that at the heart of all that we do as a Region, lies the foundational objective of establishing a spiritual environment wherein Jesus is lifted up as the one after whom lives are modeled, and where God is given the liberty to bring about ongoing purity of heart and holiness revival to our members, churches and leaders; the Asia-Pacific Region seeks to strategically align all of its activities through the lens of the following priorities:
ongoing-discipleship_bannerMaking Christlike disciples in the Nations lies at the core of all that we do. It’s our identity not just a slogan, and it is a lifestyle that should be intentionally practiced by all who call themselves Nazarene.
As we look for the Ancient Ways, we will find Jesus and His methodologies. Consequently, the Region exists to assist pastors and laity alike make Christlike disciples in the nations through training and resourcing based on best-practices, and materials that are practical, applicable and contextually adaptable.
Through an intentional strategy for discipleship built upon small group models, the region’s potential for leadership development and growth will be maximized.
intentional-leadership-development_bannerThe future of the church is largely dependent upon the character and competencies of those who are entrusted with the leadership thereof. It is often stated that everything rises and falls on leadership. For the church to be relevant in today’s world, the Asia-Pacific Region needs our leaders to be in touch with the world in which they live. While our faith is unchanging, the way that we package and communicate that faith into society needs to change.
As a response to this need, a dual emphasis will be placed on the retooling of existing leaders and the identifying and development of emerging leaders, with ongoing training and orientation for those assuming leadership assignments. To assist the districts and local churches, the Region will promote the concept of field wide Leadership Development Initiatives, with specific focus placed on emerging leaders 35 years of age and younger.
Leadership Development (servant type) of all involved in any form of ministry leadership or oversight on the Region, shall become a central consideration to all that we do. Emerging leaders need to be identified and nurtured. Existing leaders need to be given further education and encouraged to mentor and actively integrate emerging leaders. Leadership Development of young emerging leaders (35 years of age and younger), youth and children shall be of priority.
Cohesive Education / Ministerial Preparation involves the establishment of an integrated Nazarene educational system across the Region that facilitates the training and qualification of Nazarene leaders, both clergy and lay. This system, which begins with discipleship in the local church, is to ensure that ministerial preparation is accessible, applicable, affordable and approved as a course of study leading to ordination for those pursuing a call to full time ministry. To accomplish this, we must utilize twenty-first century strategies of outcomes based educational delivery within the context of new communities of learning.
As part of its objective, ministerial preparation must provide the clergy and laity alike with new tools and training to help them overcome the apparent obstacles of bi- vocationalism, language, distance and culture. While the tools of the past were good, they need to be reformatted for today. Specifically, pastors need to be equipped and retooled to deal with the possibilities, problems and paradigm shifts encountered in this new era. Such training can take the form of vocational and continuing education through classes, seminars and workshops.
Understanding that World Evangelism Fund support of residential educational institutions is not a viable long-term solution, a sustainable educational system that addresses an organic approach to evangelism needs to be developed and constantly updated. Such a reshaped educational approach will require Regional commitment, determination, clear thinking and the inclusion of key stakeholders in developing the solution.
communication-connects_bannerA connected church must learn to communicate effectively, in a way that connects the intended message with the intended audience. From a Regional perspective, this means that we need to have effective communication within our Regional structure, to our denominational structure, and to those who sacrificially contribute to the Missio Dei. We need to learn to communicate in appropriate ways that connect so that confidence in the mission can be maintained.
To this end, the Region shall provide and maintain an effective communication system that uses contemporary and emerging media to keep all constituents informed of the work in the Region and beyond, along with presenting the opportunities to partner in ministry and in prayer.
church-multiplication-expansion_bannerChurch planting happens as a result of strategic prayer, planning and collaboration. The time has come for the reprioritization of strategic expansion into areas of existing districts, nations and fields that are thus far untouched or insignificantly impacted. While entering new nations is always a worthy consideration, momentum commences with small steps in the Jerusalems and Judeas of our people and congregations. From there, the Lord will raise up those called to Samaria and the uttermost ends of the earth.
The Asia-Pacific Region is of immense diversity, and the full impact of the gospel has yet to be made. Church growth statistics demonstrate that the most effective way to evangelize is through the multiplication of churches. Healthy churches should be reproducing churches who in their turn plant churches. If the Region is going to take the Gospel into areas beyond the current reach of the evangelistic effort of the Church, it will be through the establishment of the Church, meaning the establishment of new and creatively structured communities of faith who follow Jesus and who understand their role in taking the Good News to their own in contextually relevant ways.
As an indication of their health, Nazarene churches should constantly be engaged in the objective of planting and nurturing of at least one new missional church per quadrennium as a part of the AP Region’s DNA and as a minimal goal for each local congregation. Emphasis needs to be given to reaching cities with populations in excess of a million people.
district-development_bannerA church is a dynamic entity that constantly changes and shifts as a result of demographics and culture. To be fresh and relevant in society, ongoing development is required. A district is composed of the sum of the local congregations in its geographical area of responsibility. A healthy district emerges as a result of the sum of its healthy churches.
One of the main functions of the Region is the development of the local church into a healthy missional entity. For that to happen, emphasis must be placed on district development at all levels. For leaders to succeed in their respective assignments, time and resources need to be invested in the development and training of key individuals and by leading each district through ongoing evaluation and training to move it from strength to strength.
Continued focus on planting and development of missional churches in each Field must be a regional priority. Included in this, is envisioning where the church needs to yet go, as well as assisting established churches transition from attractional to missional models.
member-care_bannerMinistry is about people. As a Region, we will establish systems and initiatives that develop and care holistically for all of the cross-cultural workers and their families serving on the Region. This care should be proactive in nature and could take the form of workshops, retreats, continuing education, counseling, pastoral touch, childcare, etc.. Where not available internally, external entities will be engaged to provide the needed care.
Where national sending agencies do exist, the Region will work with the agency to ensure that the members sent by that entity receive care of the same nature.
purposeful-compassion_bannerThe mission of God is holistic. Increasingly, ministries of compassion have become part of the work of the Region, often serving as the bridge into unreached areas. This holism is healthy and crucial to the gospel.
The goal of the Region is that every local church be actively contributing to its community through acts of compassion, and that every Nazarene be a Good Samaritan. To ensure that compassion becomes part of the lifestyle of every Nazarene, intentional training will be given in the areas of capacity building, leadership development, health, water and sanitation, and disaster relief.
operational-effectiveness_bannerAll that the Region does must be for the glory of God and the expansion of His Kingdom. The priority of Operational Effectiveness is to ensure through systems management that the right things get done properly. Efficiency and effectiveness must be the hallmark of our administrative network, while strategic planning for maximum transformational impact must be visible in all budgets and planning documents.
Given congregational and cultural shifts, intentional engagement with potential partners outside our WEF structure must be nurtured. Personal relationships must be fostered with people who desire to give in more strategic and personally satisfying ways while intentionally communicating the critical importance of WEF.
Focus on the following key areas will help keep things in perspective:
Keeping the emphasis on using our resources and talents in areas where the Gospel is not yet proclaimed or received.
Keeping the missional developmental emphasis of the districts focused on reaching out and discipleship through relational ministries.
Maximizing the use of technology to increase touch and reduce the turn around time for matters needing the attention or input of others.
Finding creative ways to meet the financial needs of our fields and personnel while also being able to help facilitate the calling to “come and serve” that our Lord is placing on many people’s lives.
