 UNION STATION. We'll meet in the Amtrak waiting room on Level 1. It's yellow on this map, and not the Post Office. Be there by 3:15 PM. Gates close at 3:50 PM.
RezChat: All aboard
HERE IS THE WORD OF Linda Miller, the brains behind this retreat.
Our Amtrak train leaves Union Station in downtown Kansas City at 4 PM tomorrow, Friday, November 7. Be there early.
Linda plans to arrive by 3 o’clock. She suggests everyone else be there by 3:15. Gates close at 3:50 PM. So we need to be on the train by then.
We will meet in the Amtrak waiting area on Level 1, just off the Grand Hall, and beside Pierpont’s Restaurant and the Kansas City Store (see the map above).
The people at Union Station recommended parking on Level B. If we do that, we don’t have to go back outside. We can take the elevator in the garage to Level 1.
I’m going to give you Linda’s detailed directions about how to drive there. But it looks kind of intimidating to me. I’d use my GPS, and this map that traces the 30-minute trip from RezWest: https://goo.gl/maps/6SO0R.
Linda’s detailed directions to Union Station:
- I-35 North to Southwest Blvd., W. Pennway exit
- Turn right at bottom of exit ramp. Turn Left onto Southwest Blvd. Follow signs to Union station.
- Turn north at the stop light, on Broadway and Pershing (away from the IRS building) onto Broadway (at Liberty Lofts). That's the only way to go.
- Overhead sign says: parking for Union Station, USPS, Science City, Amtrak (west of Union Station)
- Go to bottom of hill. Turn right at stop sign. Turn right into second garage entrance.
- Park on level B. Handicap parking available on all levels, by elevators, east end of garage.
- Take elevator to the first level of garage.
- Level B comes in at the IRS Taxpayer Assistance, Fire Museum, City Stage, etc.
- Take elevator, escalator, or stairs to Level 1.
- Amtrak station is by Pierpont’s Restaurant.
- Meet in Amtrak waiting room.
Three tips from Steve, a traveled observer
- Stay flexible and don’t get bossy. Having led groups a few times myself, I think this is the most useful advice of all. Things rarely go exactly as expected. When they don’t, consider it an adventure – and great fun.
- Potty when the pot is near. This is the second most important advice, I have discovered. If the entire group has to stop for a 10-minute potty break for one person, multiply that times the number of people in the group. That’s how many man-hours of delay we lost in Pottsville.
- Dress for the weather. My forecast says a high of 50° on Saturday, low 33°. Dress in layers. I think I’m going to wear a hoodie. It’s not stylish. But it’s warm.
Linda went to AAA today and got maps of Hermann, Missouri for each couple. But I'l give you a digital one, too.

4 pm--Leave Union Station on Amtrak; bring food to eat on train
7:48 pm--Arrive in Hermann MO; taxi to our getaway homes
Later--meet at Spirit House for devotions, games, S'mores and snores
Later still--go to bed
Saturday, Nov. 8
At a decent hour--breakfast will be provided at each house, one way or another
10:15 am--taxi to wine country
lunchtime--Wurst Haus to buy our own brats to take back to Spirit House to grill; devotions In the middle of the day
Later--taxi to wine country and/or shopping,
7 pm--Stone Hill Winery for dinner (bring your own money)
9:30 pm--Optional Oak Glenn Winery, for those still standing
Sunday, Nov.9
Early-- breakfast provided (April House gets Egg Frittata); (Spirit Hill, we cook our own leftovers), pack bags and bottles
9:45-10 am--Taxi pickup at each house
10:15 am--arrive at train
Later--5-minute devotions on train
2:55 pm--arrive at Union Station
