Sunday's Scripture:
Matthew 25:1-13
Matthew 25: The Story of the Virgins
1-5 “God’s kingdom is like ten young virgins who took oil lamps and went out to greet the bridegroom. Five were silly and five were smart. The silly virgins took lamps, but no extra oil. The smart virgins took jars of oil to feed their lamps. The bridegroom didn’t show up when they expected him, and they all fell asleep.
6 “In the middle of the night someone yelled out, ‘He’s here! The bride-groom’s here! Go out and greet him!’
7-8 “The ten virgins got up and got their lamps ready. The silly virgins said to the smart ones, ‘Our lamps are going out; lend us some of your oil.’
9 “They answered, ‘There might not be enough to go around; go buy your own.’
10 “They did, but while they were out buying oil, the bridegroom arrived. When everyone who was there to greet him had gone into the wedding feast, the door was locked.
11 “Much later, the other virgins, the silly ones, showed up and knocked on the door, saying, ‘Master, we’re here. Let us in.’
12 “He answered, ‘Do I know you? I don’t think I know you.’
13 “So stay alert. You have no idea when he might arrive.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Matthew 25:1-13:
Verse 3
[3] They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
The foolish took no oil with them — No more than kept them burning just for the present. None to supply their future want, to recruit their lamp's decay. The lamp is faith. A lamp and oil with it, is faith working by love.
Verse 4
[4] But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
The wise took oil in their vessels — Love in their hearts. And they daily sought a fresh supply of spiritual strength, till their faith was made perfect.
Verse 5
[5] While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
While the bridegroom delayed — That is, before they were called to attend him, they all slumbered and slept - Were easy and quiet, the wise enjoying a true, the foolish a false peace.
Verse 6
[6] And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
At midnight — In an hour quite unthought of.
Verse 7
[7] Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
They trimmed their lamps — They examined themselves and prepared to meet their God.
Verse 8
[8] And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out — Our faith is dead. What a time to discover this! Whether it mean the time of death, or of judgment. Unto which of the saints wilt thou then turn? Who can help thee at such a season?
Verse 9
[9] But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
But the wise answered, Lest there be not enough for us and you! — Beginning the sentence with a beautiful abruptness; such as showed their surprise at the state of those poor wretches, who had so long received them, as well as their own souls.
Lest there be not enough — It is sure there is not; for no man has more than holiness enough for himself.
Go ye rather to them that sell — Without money and without price: that is, to God, to Christ.
And buy — If ye can. O no! The time is past and returns no more!
Verse 13
[13] Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
Watch therefore — He that watches has not only a burning lamp, but likewise oil in his vessel. And even when he sleepeth, his heart waketh. He is quiet; but not secure.

22 Years of Love, Shared around Tables
Shared BreadThis month marks the 22nd Anniversary of Shared Bread--and 22 years worth of Wednesday meals for the community, prepared and served with love, around tables in our Fellowship Hall.
I'm humbled by the dedication this represents--by the countless volunteers who have chopped vegetables, picked up donations, washed dishes, talked with guests, and prayed for this ministry over the years.
I think of the thousands of things that have come together over these years: all the little tubes of toothpaste and fresh socks donated by church members, placemats decorated by our children, songs played by young musicians during dinner, vegetables given to guests, conversations shared as community is built.
All of this is a truly beautiful example of the love of Christ. We do it because it's what Jesus asks us to do. I want to offer my deep thanks to the volunteers who make this happen--it is an incredible ministry of our church, and one is entirely led by volunteers. They've pulled together a coalition of congregations, organizations, businesses and individuals who make this happen, week in and week out. I extend incredible gratitude to these leaders and all the faithful helpers.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
Please note: I will be out of the office for much of next week, taking a few days of vacation while the parsonage is tented for termites, and participating in a continuing education event. I will be back for Sunday!

Fall Stewardship
Pledge Campaign -

You are invited to bring you pledge to worship on Sunday, November 23, just before Thanksgiving--or anytime. We have already begun to receive pledged commitments, and are very grateful.
Our church's ministries depend on the financial support of our congregation--and we believe that giving is an important part of our faith lives, as well. We are grateful for the generosity of so many!

There's still time: Check Into Church
The heart of Christian ministry is Christ's ministry of outreaching love. Through our baptism, we are called to express this love through acts of witness, service, celebration and discipleship.[Book Of Discipline, ¶126]. To help us do this, the Membership Committee is asking you to Check into Church through this questionnaire. It'll only take a few minutes to complete and there's a fun "Bonus" question at the end! Be sure to stop by our booth during our Social Hour on Sunday so we can reward you for Checking Into Church!  If you want assistance completing the questionnaire, some of the committee members and staff will be available at this same time on Sunday to assist you.
From the Lay Leader, Johnna Kosnoff
bi-weekly thoughts and reflections from our church Lay
Leader
"I've been pretty focused on the college application process recently.  My son had two applications due this week and has another one due next week and a couple more due at the end of the month.  He's applying to five or six schools across the country and he's put in a fair amount of work preparing his applications and gathering the supporting documents.  In fact, I guess he's been preparing for this process since he started high school through the decisions he has made regarding class work and extra curricular activities.
As I think about the scripture (Matthew 25:1-13) that Pastor Molly will be preaching on this Sunday, I think of how God directs us to be prepared in the life of our church, as well.  Just as the bridesmaids needed to be well supplied with oil, while waiting for the bridegroom, our church needs to be well informed of its resources as it sets its 2015 budget..."

Preparing by Johnna Kosnoff
I’ve been pretty focused on the college application process recently.  My son had two applications due this week and has another one due next week and a couple more due at the end of the month.  He’s applying to five or six schools across the country and he’s put in a fair amount of work preparing his applications and gathering the supporting documents.  In fact, I guess he’s been preparing for this process since he started high school through the decisions he has made regarding class work and extra curricular activities.
As I think about the scripture (Matthew 25:1-13) that Pastor Molly will be preaching on this Sunday, I think of how God directs us to be prepared in the life of our church, as well.  Just as the bridesmaids needed to be well supplied with oil, while waiting for the bridegroom, our church needs to be well informed of its resources as it sets its 2015 budget.  Running out of oil was detrimental to the unprepared bridesmaids and running short on our budget estimations would be unhealthy for our church.  I encourage you all to be in prayer (as will I) regarding the pledge cards you received this past week and be prepared to return the card during our worship time on November 23rd.  Returning the cards will be of great assistance to our Finance Committee as they seek to diligently prepare a budget for 2015.
I also think of the prepared bridesmaids who were welcomed into the wedding banquet.  Oh what joy they must have felt to celebrate and feast together!  I am looking forward to our Welcome at the Table Potluck on November 16th, where we can feast together and celebrate the spirit and unity of our church community.  I hope to see each of you there and actually share a table with some of you.  I might even be able to report that my son’s college applications are completed and fully prepared prior to their deadlines.  Have a blessed week!
