Toni G. Atkins, Speaker of the Assembly, "Veterans Day" for Tuesday, 11 November 2014
Dear Friends,
Each fall, we pause on Nov. 11 to recognize the sacrifices of service members who have fought on behalf of our nation.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the decision, under President Dwight D. Eisenhower, to set aside a day to ensure that Americans “join hands in the common purpose” of thanking veterans for their contributions to keeping the country secure.
But sometimes gratitude is not enough – veterans need more than just thanks. The California State Assembly has done its part to offer aid to those veterans, overseeing administration of Proposition 41, which voters approved to provide housing to those most in need, and partnering with the California National Guard on the Work for Warriors program, which resulted in 2,500 jobs for veterans.
In addition, I'd like to congratulate Bill York, who was named San Diego County's Veteran of the Year last week. The U.S. Army veteran is the chief operating officer of 211 San Diego, and has maintained close ties to the veteran community, serving as chairman of the Military Transition Support Project. I nominated him for this honor and am so proud of his great contributions to San Diego veterans.
Please show your support this Veterans Day as we join hands with other San Diegans in celebrating those who have served in our nation's Armed Forces.
Warmly,
Toni G. Atkins Speaker of the Assembly 78th Assembly District
