"eConnection from NTS - January 2016" Carla Sunberg, Nazarene Theological Sseminary President of Kansas City, Missouri, United States

January 31, 2016 is this year's Annual Seminarian Offering
We are excited about what God is doing here at the Seminary as we are preparing leaders for the future—leaders for the Kingdom of God. And some of you might be wondering, I know that is important…but HOW is that important?
In the next 10-15 years, 40% of all the pastors in North America are scheduled to retire. There is great concern about what the future looks like. We have to be intentional about investing in those who are going to lead us on into the future.
So we invite you to make an investment in the future: of your local church…of your district…of the Church of the Nazarene...and the Kingdom beyond, by participating in the Seminarian Offering. We need you to partner with us as we look to the future.

DR. JOSEPH COLESON | NBBC: GENESIS 1-11, A COMMENTARY IN THE WESLEYAN TRADITION
In the "Acknowledgement" to his commentary on Genesis 1-11, Dr. Coleson shared (in part): "One great joy of a lifetime in biblical scholarship is discovery of the continual unfolding of God's story, of God's passion for creation--including God's beloved human daughters and sons. To be invited to put into the hands of our brothers and sisters a small portion of this treasure with which God has gifted us is a rare privilege and honor."
The New Beacon Bible Commentary provides 21st-century scholars, pastors, theological students, and laity an academically competent, readable commentary in the Wesleyan theological tradition. Student Spotlight
BRETT BAUMGARDNER

Rev. Brett Baumgardner is another of the many NTS students who receive scholarships to assist in the financing of their Seminary education. We asked Brett to share a bit of his testimony with the family who provided his scholarship, as well as talk about the importance that the scholarship played in his ability to attend NTS. With his permission, we share part of his letter to them with you here, below:
"My first year of seminary really showed me what it means to be surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses who love you, but who also keep you accountable. This gift will affect my goals and call by simply allowing me to continually be filled up with God and his people, so that I may provide the same for someone else." Alumni Spotlight
MATTERS, SNOOK, MERCER & McCARTY
We have recently had the pleasure of talking with several of our alumni by phone. In these conversations, we have been asking them to share with us their favorite memories about NTS and about the impact that NTS has had on their life and ministry. Below are a few responses from just a few of those dialogues. If we haven't had a chance to chat with you yet...have patience; you might be hearing from us soon!
What are some of your favorite NTS memories?
JASON MATTERS ('03): "Important conversations with colleagues in the library."
GARY SNOOK ('82): "I will forever remember the theological and God-centered dialogues I had at NTS."
How has NTS impacted your life and ministry?
MICHAEL McCARTY ('75): "The theology classes with Dr. Greathouse and Dr. Orjala have had a lasting impact on my life and ministry."
TIM MERCER ('75): "I came out of the science area at a secular institution. At Olivet, I got my feet wet thinking differently in the areas of the humanities and religion, but I was still struggling to handle it all. NTS allowed me to get a better understanding of theology and taught me how to be a pastor."
