"Why We Talk About the Weather" Rabbi Evan Moffic of Congregation Solel of Highland Park, Illinois, United States

"Why We Talk About the Weather" Rabbi Evan Moffic of Congregation Solel of Highland Park, Illinois, United States
The Book is Here

The Stone Temple pilots (1990s grunge rock band) have a verse in one of their songs: "So much depends on the weather."
Indeed, it does. Anyone stuck in their homes or in airports on the East Coast last weekend can testify.
Not only does so much depend on the weather. So much conversation centers around the weather. It's too cold. It's hot. We talk even talk about it when it's just right.
We can't tame the weather gods
Perhaps we talk about the weather because we can't control the weather. We can talk and talk and talk, but it won't change.
But the talking does make a difference to us. It is a form of therapy. We can commiserate about the blizzard and freezing cold together, and somehow that makes the pain less acute.
But Conversation Heals
The holds true in other types of conversation. For those we love, talking with them is a way of feeling their presence.
Just think of the phrase "staying in touch." Conversation can be a form of embrace.
How many of you talked to your relatives or friends on the East Coast last weekend? You knew what was happening. You didn't need to get a weather report. But you wanted to send them a hug.
That's what a good conversation is, even when it's about the weather.
If you live on the East Coast, what did you do during the blizzard? If you have friends and family there, did you call them? Hit reply and let me know.
