---------------------
Text to read: Matthew 5:33 “Again, you have heard that our fathers were told, ‘Do not break your oath,’ and ‘Keep your vows to Adonai.’[Matthew 5:33 Leviticus 19:12; Numbers 30:3(2); Deuteronomy 23:22(21)] 34 But I tell you not to swear at all — not ‘by heaven,’ because it is God’s throne; 35 not ‘by the earth,’ because it is his footstool;[Matthew 5:35 Isaiah 66:1] and not ‘by Yerushalayim,’ because it is the city of the Great King.[Matthew 5:35 Psalm 48:3(2)] 36 And don’t swear by your head, because you can’t make a single hair white or black. 37 Just let your ‘Yes’ be a simple ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ a simple ‘No’; anything more than this has its origin in evil.
---------------------John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Text to read: Matthew 5:33-37
Verse 33
[33] Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
Our Lord here refers to the promise made to the pure in heart of seeing God in all things, and points out a false doctrine of the scribes, which arose from their not thus seeing God. What he forbids is, the swearing at all, 1, by any creature, 2, in our ordinary conversation: both of which the scribes and Pharisees taught to be perfectly innocent. Exodus 20:7.
Verse 36
[36] Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
For thou canst not make one hair white or black — Whereby it appears, that this also is not thine but God's.
Verse 37
[37] But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
Let your conversation be yea, yea; nay, nay — That is, in your common discourse, barely affirm or deny.

Sermon Story "Mean Yes or Mean No" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 31 January 2016 with Scripture Text to read: Matthew 5:33 “Again, you have heard that our fathers were told, ‘Do not break your oath,’ and ‘Keep your vows to Adonai.’[Matthew 5:33 Leviticus 19:12; Numbers 30:3(2); Deuteronomy 23:22(21)] 34 But I tell you not to swear at all — not ‘by heaven,’ because it is God’s throne; 35 not ‘by the earth,’ because it is his footstool;[Matthew 5:35 Isaiah 66:1] and not ‘by Yerushalayim,’ because it is the city of the Great King.[Matthew 5:35 Psalm 48:3(2)] 36 And don’t swear by your head, because you can’t make a single hair white or black. 37 Just let your ‘Yes’ be a simple ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ a simple ‘No’; anything more than this has its origin in evil.

Wow! We have Jesus talking about the oaths that people have made to God as not really correct. Apparently, people were relying the oaths to follow an obedient life of holiness rather than taking care of the God business as God would really want them to. Ath times, they may have said yes or no to God than changed their minds according to what they felt they should do rather than what God wanted them to do. At times God would ask them to do something and they may say yes or no then change their minds as a parable of the man who had two sons and the father asked the one to harvest his fields and the son said no and the other son was asked to harvest the field and he said yes, but actually the one who said no went and harvested the field while the one that said yes did not go. Jesus asked the question which son was obedient and the people said the one who actually harvested the field even though he initially said no. This comes to the area when God is asking His church to reach out to all people in His love, but the people may say yes and not do it or say no and go ahead and do it. This happens as we deal with the marginalized whether they are immigrants or refugees or blacks or other cultures or people with different sexual orientation or even people who are differently abled. This yes and no requirement of Jesus is reflected in the parable of the sheeps and the goats where the ones who did it to the least of these my brother and sister you did this unto Jesus, Himself. How are you doing at saying yes to Jesus when He ask you to do something for His Kingdom that may be hard or misunderstood? When come to the time to reflect on the times we have sinned against God b saying yes to what He has asked us to do and we than refuse as we come to take and eat the Body of Jesus and drink His Blood in our participation of the Holy Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist to receive His Forgiveness and blessings for our life and His work thorugh us. We come singing the Hymn "YES, LORD, YES" by Lynn Keesecker
I'll say yes Lord yes
To Your will and to Your way
I'll say yes Lord yes
I will trust You and obey
When the Spirit speaks to me
With my whole heart I'll agree
And my answer will be

Yes
and "I'll Say Yes To My Lord"
1. I'LL SAY YES TO MY LORD
I'LL SAY YES TO MY LORD
HE'S DONE GREAT THINGS
HE'S DONE GREAT THINGS
I'LL SAY YES, YES, YES TO MY LORD
2. BROUGHT ME OUT OF DARKNESS
INTO THE MARVELOUS LIGHT
PLACE MY FEET ON STRAIGHT STREET
GAVE ME THE STRENGTH TO FIGHT
3. HE'S DONE GREAT THNGS
HE'S DONE GREAT THINGS
I'LL SAY YES, YES, YES TO MY LORD
4. RUNNING IN MY FEET
CLAPPING IN MY HANDS
PRAISES ON MY LIPS
JOY IN MY HEART
5. HE'S DONE GREAT THNGS
HE'S DONE GREAT THINGS
I'LL SAY YES, YES, YES TO MY LORD
additional verse:
6. Gave me a song
Angels could not sing
Glory Halleluiah
I been redeemed
He's done great things
He's done great things
I say yes yes yes

to my lord
