"President's eUpdate--Leaders in the Church and World" Saint Paul School of Theology of Leawood, Kansas, United States for Wednesday, 27 January 2016

President's eUpdate
Dear Saint Paul Community,

The Spring semester began this Monday, January 25. Each semester I read through the course offerings. As I did that over the weekend, two listings especially caught my interest. One is The Black Church in the United States taught by Dr. Angela Sims. When a course beckons me, I turn to the required reading list.
The Divided Mind of the Black Church: Theology, Piety, & Public Witness
The Negro Church in America and The Black Church Since Frazier, E. Franklin Frazier and C. Eric Lincoln
African American Religious History: A Documentary Witness, Milton C. Sernett
The Black Church in the African American Experience, C. Eric Lincoln and Lawrence Mamiya
I was also pleased to see that Rev. Dr. Emanuel Cleaver III, DMin '07, Senior Pa
stor at St. James United Methodist Church, Kansas City, MO., is leading the practicum Leadership in Ministry: Understanding the Role of the Pastor and the Work of the People. What a marvelous opportunity to learn from a faithful and visionary pastor and alum.
Speaking of leaders for the church, please continue to identify future leaders and tell them about the Fellows program at Saint Paul. Saint Paul Fellows covers tuition, books, and fees for three years. Each fellow will receive a pastoral mentor and a student appointment with a stipend to cover living expenses. Learn more at www.spst.edu/fellows. Deadline for 2016 applications is February 1st.
Last week I received a note with an email that included a list of the 25 fastest growing
churches in the United Methodist Church. Rev. Dr. Jack Stephenson MDiv '82 and DMin '94 of Anona United Methodist Church, a multi-site church in Largo, Florida, made the list. I invite you to check out the church's website, www.anona.com
This is how they describe themselves:
Anona has many members and visitors who would call us their church home. Some are here all year while others make a season home with us in the winter months. All in all, we are a church community that is made up of all generations: parents/single parents, youth, children, elderly, and grandparents even great-grandparents. We are happy to be a church of a very inclusive people: It's our culture.
What does that mean? Some of us are conservative, some liberal, some drink, some don't, some gay, most straight, and some comfortable with that and some not. We are mostly white, but growing in our diversity. What unites us is not how to think, or what to think. It is not our age or gender or race. We are all attracted to the thought of a Christian life that is meaningful and purposeful.
Saint Paul graduates are witnessing to the gospel of Jesus Christ with faith and vision all over the world.
On the journey with you,

Rev. H. Sharon Howell, President
