"President's eUpdate--Where We Are: Part 1" Saint Paul School of Theology of Leawood, Kansas, United States for Tuesday, 9 February 2016

President's eUpdate
Dear Saint Paul Community,
Oh my goodness it has been an amazing 20 months at Saint Paul School of Theology. Simply amazing. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, presidents of neighboring United Methodist colleges/universities, bishops, district superintendents, Boards of Ministry, and local churches where students serve in ministry settings have provided moments of inspiration, critical reflection, tough questions, insightful suggestions and hope for the future.
Thank you for this amazing experience of serving with and among you on behalf of Saint Paul School of Theology in two locations!
Where are we now? Saint Paul is moving forward and planning for the future. We currently have two locations. I believe we will have additional locations within the next two years. Where do you think they will be?
We currently have one 3+3 agreement with Kansas Wesleyan University and the approval by the Board of Trustees at Oklahoma City University for a 3+3 agreement that is being written. What United Methodist College or University will offer the next collaboration opportunity?
Dr. Young Ho-Chun is serving as the Director of Asian Studies for Saint Paul. He is currently recruiting the 4th Korean Doctor of
Ministry track of students. The model of theological education designed for this highly successful and unique program is currently being considered by other global communities. Where will the next global DMin track emerge?

Current studies about theological education point to the continued decline in enrollment for the Master of Divinity degree program. We have and are experiencing the enrollment decline. It matches the decline in mainline denomination membership and the decline in full time clergy appointments. Most folks don't bother to read the next portion of the study.
The next paragraph indicates that the enrollment in other Master degree programs in seminaries will continue to increase and within 6 years will surpass the Master of Divinity program enrollments. Theological education for the future will continue to educate and form pastoral leadership for God's church as it changes to serve with and among God's people.
Seminaries will also educate and form those who are seekers, searchers and sojourners on the journey of life, meaning and service that makes a difference. Theological education at Saint Paul will offer two fully online courses in the fall
semester of 2016 and two in the spring semester of 2017. We will continue to offer our popular hybrid courses: a mixture of in class and online. We offer video link classes for every course between our two locations at Oklahoma City University and Church of the Resurrection.

In addition to our Master of Divinity (79 hours) and Doctor of Ministry degrees, we have two Master of Arts degrees that we are working to refresh. The Master of Arts in Theological Studies (49 hours) and Master of Arts in Christian Ministry (54 hours). Each of these MA degrees have specialization options.
This is an exciting and challenging moment as Saint Paul adjusts, aligns and anticipates educating and forming students for witness and service in God's world.
I have two more eUpdates to share "Where We Are" before I step back into retirement. Stay tuned.
On the journey with you,

Rev. H. Sharon Howell, President
Saint Paul School of Theology

FROM: Twila Glenn, Chair
Board of Trustees
Saint Paul School of Theology
DATE: February 2, 2016
RE: President H. Sharon Howell
__________________________________________
It is with sadness and a significant sense of loss that I share with you the information that President H. Sharon Howell has tendered her resignation as President of Saint Paul School of Theology, effective March 1, 2016.
This is a decision that President Howell has reached after a prayerful discernment process that has included her health care professionals. She has concluded that it is imperative that she resign from her position as President as soon as possible and return to the retirement from which she so generously came to Saint Paul one-and-a-half years ago.
President Howell has assured me that she will do everything in her power to ensure a smooth transition into the next phase of Saint Paul's leadership.
I anticipate that the Board of Trustees will announce a transition plan in the next few weeks.
I know that many of you will want to share your personal thanks with President Howell for the extraordinary service she has rendered to Saint Paul during the last year and a half.
We will be planning a more formal "thank you" at a later time and will make sure that the entire community that surrounds Saint Paul has an opportunity to share in the celebration of her presidency.
