"Developing Leaders" by Stan Toler
"Discovering the Leader within You
Three Characteristics of a Leader's Heart
Leadership is an attitude. Sure, some people have the skills that contribute to success in leadership. But I'm convinced that most leaders, especially the great ones, are those who rise to meet the crisis or opportunity of their generation-not those who master a set of techniques.
The best leaders don't so much aspire to lead as they are driven to solve problems, create change, and bring progress. So while skill is undoubtedly important for leadership, the leader's heart is vital.
Here are three signs that you have the inner qualities that make for a great leader.
1. You Value Results over Rules - Of course a leader must maintain solid ethical, moral, and spiritual boundaries. They do not believe that the end justifies the means. But the best leaders are not slaves to traditions or standard operating procedures. They want to see the right outcome for their efforts.
If you're a die-hard rule abider, you may struggle in leadership. If improving the product, increasing sales, winning more converts, or graduating more students is more important to you than "the way we do things around here," you have the heart of a leader.
2. You Care about Others More Than Self
The greatest leaders are not in it for themselves. Trace the history of great leadership from Gideon to David, from Washington to Lincoln. Each of them would just as well have stayed home-except that others needed their help.
Shallow leaders take on a responsibility to enlarge their own platform, make more money, or hear the applause of the crowd. Great leaders realize that their work is a sacrifice of self. They are driven by a sense of justice and a desire to make life better for others.
If you're hoping to achieve a great reputation as a leader, you probably won't. If you care more helping others than getting them to like you, you have the heart of a leader.
3. You Value Long-Term Improvement over Short-Term Gains
All great leaders take the long view. While they have a sense of urgency, they realize that lasting change is not achieved in an instant. They're willing to be patient. Think of the young Moses, who resorted to violence to achieve justice, versus the older Moses, who led the people on a decades-long trek toward freedom.
If you lack the patience to work for weeks, years, even decades toward a goal, you may not be cut out for leadership. If you are willing to work toward results that you may never see, you have the heart of a leader.[Stan Toler]

Kudjip, Papua New Guinea
Moving from bed to bed, Chaplain Moses Munda was making his rounds in the Pediatric Ward at Nazarene Hospital, in the Highland of Papua New Guinea. This is one of the ministries he especially enjoys, interacting with the children, and praying with the parents for healing of their precious little ones.
Maggie, the mother of a very sick four-month-old baby boy explained how she had been a patient there five years earlier and how that after Chaplain Moses had prayed for her and the ongoing illness, she had been healed and no longer needed the medications she had been taking for some time. She further explained that since that time, to show her gratitude, she had been spending each Friday and Saturday fasting and praying for the work of the Nazarene Hospital at Kudjip, the chaplains, the doctors and the staff. And now, she was bringing her sick son to be treated.

YOU SHARED SCRIPTURE AND PRAYED FOR ME…AND I WAS HEALED!!
Entrance to the Kudjip Hospital in Papua New Guinea.
Kudjip, Papua New Guinea: Chaplain Moses Munda was making his routine rounds in the Pediatric Ward at Nazarene Hospital, in Kudjip, in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea.
Moses always enjoys interacting with the children, making them laugh or smile. The moms are usually worried about their sick children, and are very appreciative of his encouragement, for the scriptures that he shares, and for his prayers for the healing of their children, and strength for them.
On this particular morning, as Chaplain Moses moved from bed to bed, he came to the bed of a sick four-month-old boy and his mom. Before he could introduce himself, the mother said, “Are you Chaplain Moses?”
“Yes, I am,” he replied, a little surprised. “Should I know you?”
“You shared scripture with me, and prayed for me, and I was healed!”- Maggie - Patient at Kudjip
“We met about five years ago. My name is Maggie. I was a patient in the Outpatient Department. You shared scripture with me, and prayed for me, and I was healed.”
Maggie went on to tell that prior to her healing, she had been ill for a long time. Even though she had faithfully taken the medicines that the doctors had been prescribing for her, she had continued to be troubled by fevers and high blood pressure.
One day when she came in, one of the doctors had suggested that she might want to meet with one of the chaplains, and Chaplain Moses had been called.
When he had prayed for her, she felt better, but it was only after she had gone back home that she realized that she no longer felt feverish. The next time she had her blood pressure checked, it was normal. Eventually she was able to stop all of the medicines.
“After I was healed,” Maggie continued, “I began to think about what I could do to show my gratitude for the ministry of Nazarene Hospital. Since that time I have made Friday and Saturday special days to fast and pray for you, the other chaplains and the doctors and staff of the hospital. Now I have brought my new son here, and I know that through the work of the doctors and the chaplains he will be healed.”
It was only three days later that Maggie and her little boy went home rejoicing for God’s provision of health and healing through Nazarene Hospital.
14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.[James 5:14-16 NIV]
Prayer is the key for Nazarene Health Ministries.

Myanmar, SE Asia

Amidst the countries that are leading the world in technological growth, there are still areas that have very limited access to "gadgets." It is in these areas that the Church of the Nazarene is introducing the Solar Powered Papyrus Audio Bibles, bringing God's Word to people groups that might not otherwise hear.
Audio Bibles are being distributed to small groups in some local churches. The small group leaders are playing the Audio Bible during their group sessions. They also lend the Papyrus to those who are sick and who cannot come to church or attend the small group. Many people are gaining a fascination in listening to the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God who allows media to bring the message to those who have not yet heard, and for whom the written word is inaccessible.

SOLAR POWERED AUDIO BIBLE…BRINGING THE GOSPEL…TRANSFORMING LIVES!
Myanmar, SE Asia: Mobile technology is taking the Asia-Pacific Region by storm! Countries and areas once separated from technology, are embracing it with open arms, leading to the growth of mobile technology on the Asia-Pacific Region – leading the rest of the world!
The story of the Papyrus Solar-Powered Audio Bible is just one story of how the Church is using technology to advance the Kingdom!
Myanmar Country Coordinator, Rev. Bill Kwon, sent in the following inspiring report.
In October of 2015, Kwanthanga attended the Asia-Pacific Emerging Leaders conference and was introduced to the Papyrus Solar-Powered Audio Bible. Returning from the conference, “Thanga” shared the Papyrus “gadget” with his five children.
“The Message has become a part of their lives!”- Mr. Thanga
Up to this point, there had not been many electronic “gadgets” in their lives. The Papyrus unit became their very good friend. They shared the Papyrus often! Whenever they had free time, they would turn it on and listen to the media that it contained – the audio Bible in their own language! It became their constant companion; taking a bath, sitting on the sofa, laying on the floor, time with the Papyrus unit became the children’s most enjoyable time.
Mr. and Mrs. Thanga testified that their children are truly, “growing in the Word of the Lord. The Message has become a part of their lives!”
“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”- Isaiah 55:11 (NIV)
We have also seen how the Papyrus is helping to bring the Bible to new church plants! In Tasee, lay evangelist Mr. Thana planted a church in the Burmese area.
Bill Kwon and Mr. Thana

Mr. Thana’s passion to reach the lost brought him to a meeting with a new Pastora, Hlee San Yee, who just graduated from Bible college. He introduced her to the Papyrus Audio Bible.
Planting a new church, Pastora Hlee San Yee used the Papyrus to share the Gospel to the new believers.
“Most of these new believers have never learned to read,” shared Pastora. “Through the audio Bible, they can enjoy listen the Word of the Lord.”
But it doesn’t end there. More Audio Bibles are being distributed to small groups in five local churches.
The requests for more of the Audio Bibles are many! Pastors and lay leaders are saying that in the new church planting areas, the Audio Bible will be of great help for new and non-believers in understanding the message of hope found in Christ.
The Myanmar District is now planting 23 new house churches in Tahan, Karen, Mon, Bangkok and KL.
Please pray for the work of the church in Myanmar, and for the impact of the Word of God as it is being brought to the people through the Audio Bible!More:

There are more than 4 billion oral learners in our world who are unable to read the Scriptures in their own language.¹ This includes illiterate, non-readers, blind and visually impaired. We have developed a special project to provide Audio Bible devices and appropriate training to Nazarene ministerial students, pastors, and other key leaders in strategic areas of the Asia-Pacific Region.
The devices will be loaded with the Bible in a local language, and (as requested) other audio training materials such as Course of Study classes [for training new pastors]. This project will facilitate the training of leaders and the making of Christlike disciples among primarily oral learners where the Church is not yet established. This project supplements a grant from Kids Reaching Kids and will allow the purchase and distribution of even more Audio Bibles.

NAZARENE’S STRUGGLES AND STRENGTHS – CURRENT REPORT!
Discipleship Place – Global Church: The Church of the Nazarene has been partnering with Back to the Bible and GoTandem, in developing custom mobile applications to help our people engage with the living Word of God!
John Comstock from Discipleship Place sends the following note:
“May I share what we now know of current Nazarene’s using one of the 463 custom church apps? Of the 14,982 active Nazarene users of the custom mobile apps, there are 9,002 that have taken the assessment. Of these, 40% deal with fear as their primary area of struggle on a weekly basis; 48% of those are females. I think this is a significant awareness as we think about where people are in relation to their faith walk. Fear is a significant emotion that can cause us to retreat from intimacy with God. May we ask for God’s help to encourage our people to press into His perfect love.”
In looking at the statistical report from our Mobile Apps, I find additional significant insights of those 9,002 who participated in the assessment:
  • 36% struggled with anger and criticizing others
  • 31% with difficulty in forgiving.
On the Strengths side, I was encouraged to see that according to the assessment, participants ranked highest in the following strengths (in order of percentages).
  • Faithfulness
  • Joy
  • Kindness
  • Perseverance
Validated research by Back To The Bible indicated the following among other significant findings:

It is obvious that engaging with the Word makes an impact!

After our basic needs are met, research suggests, more money doesn't bring us more happiness. Perhaps that's why, in general, people who prioritize material things over other values are much less happy, and comparing ourselves with people who have more is a particular source of unhappiness.
In this post, there are several suggested activities for cultivating happiness that are all science-based and affirm what Christ has been saying all along. From things like building relationships to practicing
kindness, you will find an explanation of how this can help boost your happiness.

BREATHING DEEP…ENDURANCE FOR THE RACE… FEELING GOOD!
Feeling–good verb \ˈfēling-ˌgu̇d\ :producing good or happy feelings
What is it? Oh we know what this is! This is that morning when we wake up and just feel in our soul that the world is in its place… that life is worth living, that there is space and time for something good to happen. We like this feeling. And though we may hear that nagging voice, somewhere in our head, reminding us that not everything is as it should be… still, we choose to linger, just for a moment, breathing in this… goodness. It seems to land on us by surprise in unexpected moments, and then it seems to leave, just as unannounced.
Feeling Good is the emotional component of happiness, defined by Sonja Lyubomirsky as “the experience of joy, contentment, or positive well-being, combined with a sense that one’s life is good, meaningful, and worthwhile.” This definition captures the fleeting positive emotions that come with happiness – the feeling good component – along with a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in life—(Greater Good Science Center, Berkeley) Feeling good is the emotional indicator that we are happy!
Why does it matter?
Happiness is very important for Harmon and me. Even in the midst of grief or challenging circumstances, we monitor our ability to feel moments of happiness along the way as a strong indicator of our holistic health. When the experience of happiness is too far away, for too long, it gets our attention. In her groundbreaking research on positivity, psychologist Barbara Fredrickson has found that:
  • Positive emotions “broaden our thinking in ways that make us more flexible, more able to see the big picture, and more creative.” Throughout our marriage and even in the messiness of life, we’ve found that we are most able to explore solutions, strategize creatively and be effective when our ‘happiness meters’ are healthy.
  • Positive emotions “accumulate and compound over time, transforming us for the better by building the resources—strength, wisdom, friendship, and resilience—we need to truly thrive.”
  • Positive emotions “are the most important ingredient in determining a person’s resilience in hard times.” Happiness is our way of saving health for a rainy day.
  • Positive emotions “help both our bodies and our minds cope with stress, challenge, and negative feelings.” Neuroscience has proven that positive emotions chemically change the environment in our brain… it’s one of the best ways to manage stress.
In addition, GGSC Berkely research indicates that happy people:
  • Are healthier, live longer and less likely to get sick.
  • Are more likely to have fulfilling marriages.
  • Have more friends.
  • Are more productive at work.
  • Are more generous – more likely to give to others.
  • Cope better with stress and trauma.
  • Are more creative and are better able to see the big picture.
What Can I Do About It?
So, does God want me to feel happy? Good question! As I read through the following, science-based activities for cultivating happiness from the Greater Good Science Center at Berkeley, I find it fascinating that every one of these are key components of Jesus’ teachings (challenge: find a Bible verse that supports each of these principles). Isn’t it amazing when Science affirms what Christ has been saying all along?
  • Build relationships: Perhaps the dominant finding from happiness research is that social connections are key to happiness. Studies show that close relationships, including romantic relationships, are especially important, suggesting we should make time for those closest to us—people in whom we can confide and who’ll support us when we’re down.
  • Give thanks: People who keep “gratitude journals” feel more optimism and greater satisfaction with their lives. Research shows that writing a “gratitude letter” to someone you’ve never properly thanked brings a major boost of happiness.
  • Practice kindness: People report greater happiness when they spend money on others than when they spend it on themselves, even though they initially think the opposite would be true. Similarly, neuroscience research shows that when we do nice things for others, our brains light up in areas associated with pleasure and reward.
  • Give up grudges: Groundbreaking studies show that when we forgive those who have wronged us, we feel better about ourselves, experience more positive emotions, and feel closer to others.
  • Get physical: Studies show that regular physical activity increases happiness and self-esteem, reduces anxiety and stress, and can even lift symptoms of depression. “Exercise may very well be the most effective instant happiness booster of all activities.” (Lyubomirsky)
  • Get rest: Research has consistently linked lower sleep to lower happiness. What’s more, a study of more than 900 women, found that getting just one more hour of sleep each night might have a greater effect on happiness than a $60,000 raise.
  • Pay attention: Studies show that people who practice mindfulness—the moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and external circumstances—are more likely to be happy and enjoy greater life satisfaction, and they are less likely to be hostile or anxious.
  • Don’t focus on material wealth: After our basic needs are met, research suggests, more money doesn’t bring us more happiness. Perhaps that’s why, in general, people who prioritize material things over other values are much less happy, and comparing ourselves with people who have more is a particular source of unhappiness.
As a follower of Christ, living in the freedom of forgiveness and the reality of daily dynamic relationship with him, I have every reason to celebrate this life and cultivate happiness! I love this video of 13 year old Carly Rose Sonenclar as she sings with abandon, “Feeling Good,” and it inspires me to see that “it’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life”… every day and that’s a great reason to Feel Good!![Cindy Schmelzenbach – Regional Member Care Coordinator]
