From Pastor Molly: honoring the memory
This weekend is Memorial Day, a holiday for remembering those who have gone before us, and an occasion to remember especially those who have died while serving in our armed forces. It's a day to honor that selfless service, and also a humbling reminder of the incredible cost of war.
I'm told that there are a variety of conflicting accounts of how the first Memorial Day observances began. Certainly, there are traditions of decorating the graves of those who have died in war that are much older that the United States; our national holiday, though, has roots in traditions that began after the US Civil War. Both the North and the South had customs for honoring the graves of soldiers. On Memorial Day, though, especially, we're invited to see beyond these sides, and count the cost of all lives lost.
The dream that God sets before us, of the reign of Christ's peace, pushes us past our divisions and oppositions, to recognize the value in all the lives of all God's children. Jesus is always pushing us to see our "enemies" in a new light, choosing reconciliation and love.
This Memorial Day, I hope you'll take a moment to pause and honor the lives of those who have been lost to war. Then, I encourage you to find at least one small way to work for peace in the world: an act of charity for someone you might believe is your enemy, a word of forgiveness for someone who has hurt you, an act of selfless service for someone who cannot pay you back.[Pastor Molly Vetter]
The church office will be closed on Monday, May 30, in observance of the Memorial Day Holiday.

"Faith Like This"
Luke 7:1-10
Scripture Text: Luke 7:1 When Yeshua had finished speaking to the people, he went back to K’far-Nachum. 2 A Roman army officer there had a servant he regarded highly, who was sick to the point of death. 3 Hearing about Yeshua, the officer sent some Jewish elders to him with the request that he come and heal his servant. 4 They came to Yeshua and pleaded earnestly with him, “He really deserves to have you do this, 5 for he loves our people — in fact, he built the synagogue for us!” 6 So Yeshua went with them. He had not gone far from the house, when the officer sent friends who said to him, “Sir, don’t trouble yourself. I’m not worthy to have you come under my roof — 7 this is why I didn’t presume to approach you myself. Instead, just give a command and let my servant recover. 8 For I too am a man set under authority. I have soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” 9 Yeshua was astonished at him when he heard this; and he turned and said to the crowd following him, “I tell you, not even in Isra’el have I found such trust!” 10 When the messengers got back to the officer’s house, they found the servant in good health.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Luke 7:1-10
Verse 3
[3] And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.

Special Music: "He's Been Faithful" by Carol Cymbala
In my own suffering
Through every pain every tear
There's a God who's been faithful to me
When my strength was all gone
When my heart had no song
Still in love He's proved faithful to me
Every word He's promised is true
What I thought was impossible
I've seen my God do
He's been faithful
Faithful to me
Looking back He's love and mercy I see
Though in my heart I have questioned
And failed to believe
He's been faithful, faithful to me
When my heart looked away
The many times I could not pray
Still my God was faithful to me
The days are spent so selfishly
Reaching out for what pleased me
Even then God was faithful to me
Every time I come back to Him
He is waiting for open arms
And I see once again
He's been faithful
Faithful to me
Looking back He's love and mercy I see
Though in my heart I have questioned
Even failed to believe
Yet He's been faithful, faithful to me

Wasn't it great to have Pastor Molly Vetter back in the pulpit last Sunday? When we miss our regular Pastor, it's always a special feeling upon their return.
Did you happen to notice last Sunday that Cris Monarch was playing the church organ for the hymns and then stepped over to the electronic keyboard for the Worship Band's performance, and by the end of the service he was at the grand piano and that he sounded outstanding at each of those keyboards? All our musicians are wonderful and do several things at a time when needed.
We noticed last week (and read in the bulletin) that hearing assistance devices are available by asking at the audio/video booth in the sanctuary. For those needing one of these aids it is different than when they were in the Narthex and the ushers handed them out.
I read in Wednesday's Daily Breeze that Ernie's son, Marco Valenzuela was a star in Redondo Union High School's Tuesday (5/24) game defeating La Salle 8-1. If you wish to know more, just ask Ernie.
St. Cross Episcopal Church in Hermosa Beach has begun emphasizing welcoming newcomers who visit their church and in their newsletter “The Crossroads”, listed some things one can do to welcome people who are newcomers. I especially liked this suggestion: “Treat first time visitors as guests of God, not strangers.” Also, don't let people sit alone. Join them and make them welcome.
My friend Paul Caldwell is busy signing up people to help collect parking fees Sunday and Monday, Memorial Day week-end. I remember doing this many, many years and help put a few more dollars into our church budget with the gift fees from beach-goers. He'll be in the patio Sunday looking for you to help out. It's a two-person job where you meet another volunteer and help our budget as well.
Not today, but next week's pot-luck follows worship Sunday, June 5th. Hope to see you there.

Support the Baja Trip!
On Sunday, May 15, Baja Trip participants will begin selling stock to our Baja Mission 2016. Participants have been asked to pay their registration costs of $375 each. If we raise $6,025 at church, everyone's goal is met (families paid their own $100 deposits)! We raised $1,405 with stock sales so far, so we still have $4,620 to go!
Buying stock entitles stock holders to free attendance at our Stock-Holders Meeting & Report on August 14th! We will report in, show pictures, and let stock-holders know what we did with their investments.
Buying different values of stock also comes with various other perks. Stop by our booth on the church patio to find out more!

Thursday, May 26, 2016 - Music Notes by Jim Raycroft
The Brooklyn Tabernacle is a non-denominational, multi-cultural church in the heart of downtown Brooklyn that began as a small congregation worshiping in a rundown building, and has grown into a congregation of over 16,000. The husband and wife team of Pastor Jim Cymbala and music director Carol Cymbala took over leadership of the 30 member congregation in 1971. By the 1980’s, the church had grown enough to purchase the 1383-seat Carlton Theatre and convert it into their sanctuary. By 2002, they had outgrown that facility and purchased Loew’s Metropolitan Theatre, a former vaudeville theatre, and renovated it into a state-of-the-art, 3,200-seat worship facility.
The choir began with just 9 members in 1971 and grew with the church. Carol Cymbala began writing music for the choir, and they recorded their first album in the 1980’s. Now numbering over 280 members, their music is sung all over the world, and they sang at the 2013 inauguration of President Obama. This week’s anthem is one of Carol’s classics – simple and beautiful – and features our own Julie Brody as the soloist. The offertory this week is a medley of 2 songs that I expect you’ll recognize.
This Sunday is also the kickoff of our series Famous Postludes. I’ve been debating whether or not to let the cat out of the bag and tell you what we’re doing, but where’s the fun in that? This week’s Famous Postlude will feature our own Chuck Hornaday on guitar. Be there or be sorry!
Last Sunday morning, one of the members came up to me after the service and asked if she could sing with the choir for We Are The World. The answer is that anyone can sing with us anytime. We’re not a private club. If you feel the desire to sing, join us when you are able. Anytime. Everyone is welcome.

The California-Pacific Conference has introduced Safe Gatherings, an online abuse prevention program that screens and educates staff and volunteers to help prevent abuse of children, youth, and vulnerable adults in group settings.
Our congregation's staff and volunteers are participating in this program which includes an application, background check, and the online training every three years. (Some of you may have already received invitations to participate in the screening or provide a reference for one of our volunteers.)
We are excited to be a part of this new program as we continue to grow and offer a safe space for all.

We have many spots to fill for liturgists on Sunday mornings. The following link will take you the sign up. Please check it out.
