Greetings RezDowntowners,
It has been a great week at the church as we’ve taken seriously our intentional efforts to be a good neighbor. I saw this on Tuesday pretty vividly, as we hosted over 20 construction workers (working behind the office on the Berlau Building) over for lunch as a way of blessing them on a 90 degree day. Later that same day we hosted KCNOVA a citywide program led by Mayor Sly James, the Chief of Police and several other city leaders in their effort to reduce violent crime in the city. It was a great privilege to be a part of this program in an attempt to transform the city, and in many instances, save lives. I am so proud of the work of this church! Thank you for making these events so successful!
As I sit here typing, I am also feeling really excited for the weekend ahead as well. On Saturday morning we are hosting Faithwork, and I would love for you to join us as we’re planning for several great projects out in the community both in downtown KCMO as well as KCK. Please invite a few friends and join us at 1522 McGee by 9am as we put our faith to work and serve throughout the city. Additionally, this weekend we are hosting Coffee With the Pastors on Sunday afternoon at 1:30pm in the sanctuary at 1522 McGee. Coffee with the Pastors is a way in which you can learn more about RezDT’s purpose and vision, our pastors’ stories and learn about our expectations for membership.
Lastly, this weekend, we are excited to continue in our sermon series on The Story of Moses. This weekend we’ll be exploring what it means to be called by God to do something extraordinary. It will be a powerful weekend to discern what God has in store for our lives and how God might be calling you to do something extraordinary! I hope you’ll join us as we ponder all the things that God is calling each one of us to do as we live into this new school year and this new season of ministry in downtown KC. I am excited to see you all in worship this weekend…it’s going to be a great one!

Did You Miss the Announcement Last Weekend? Pastor Anne is Expecting! Pastor Anne and her husband, Eric are expecting their second child and we are very happy for them (especially for soon-to-be big brother Jude). August FaithWork – this Saturday, August 20 at 9 am. Join us as we invite everyone to spend a Saturdaymorning in service to our city. We are committed to being a church that reaches out and serves others, so just show up at 1522 McGee wearing clothes that can get dirty. Bring a friend and we will offer several opportunities including, Lazarus Ministries to serve a meal; painting at KC Rescue Mission; work in the Urban Christian Academy boutique with projects to prep for back to school; the State Street Project; play and craft with KCK youth, and other indoor projects. Coffee With the Pastors – this Sunday, August 21, 1:30 – 3:30 pm at 1522 McGee. Do you consider Resurrection Downtown your church home? RezRidersDT - RezDT’s Bicycle Club meets every Saturday at 7:30 am in the 1522 McGee parking lot to leave at 7:45 am. It will be a 90-minute, no-drop ride in the city. 2nd Annual Women’s Retreat - Saturday, August 27! Join other women from 9 am – 2 pm at 1522 McGee for some “Trash Talk,” as we learn simple yet powerful tools to embrace compassion for ourselves and truly activate Jesus' teaching of "love thy neighbor." Don't miss this opportunity to transform your life and impact our world. Pastor Anne and Diane Breneman will be leading this class. An attorney for over 25 years, Diane devoted her law career to supporting those who suffered catastrophic burn injuries. Through her law practice, Diane worked with talented neuroscientists, neurologists and psychiatrists across the country to support her injured clients. It was through these experts that she first learned of science’s advancements regarding how to rewire the brain to optimize the experience of life through contemplative practice. She will lead us to use our faith and our minds to help us lead a God-filled life where we rid ourselves of the trash we talk each day! For questions, contact Kelly.sisney@cor.org. Rezdt 20/30 Young Adults 4th Thursdays with Centennial UMC - Join us August 25 for Breaking Bread with our friends from Centennial United Methodist Church. Matthew's Ministry Family Day Out Downtown! Sunday, August 28, from 1-4 pm at 1522 McGee – Individuals of all ages with special needs and their siblings are invited to a fun-filled day of crafts, activities, and fellowship while parents and caregivers take an afternoon for themselves. Participants must register by Wednesday, August 24 so that we may plan accordingly for snacks and volunteers. This is an open event to the community. Half Truths Study – Join others starting Tuesday, August 30 at 7pm at 1522 McGee for a 6-week video-study based on Pastor Adam's book about the simple phrases we hear so much. They sound Christian – like something you might find in the Bible. We’ve all heard these words. Maybe we’ve said them. They capture some element of truth, yet they miss the point in important ways. Join others as we look at phrases like “hate the sinner, love the sin” or “God helps those who help themselves.” The book, Half Truths, will be available for purchase ($10) at the first class, scholarships available. What’s The Purpose? Finding Fulfillment at Work. On Wednesday, August 31 at 7pm, share the evening with Pastor Anne and licensed psychologist Charlotte McCloskey. Work through and discuss why sometimes the daily grind of working for a paycheck feels unfulfilling and exhausting and yet the God who created each of us with our unique passions and gifts calls us to work that is life-giving. SAVE THE DATE: Citywide Blessing of the Animals!!! Mark your calendars for our 2nd Annual Pet Blessing on Saturday, September 24 at 9 am at Washington Square Park (Pershing & Grand – across the street from Crown Center). We all love our pets - they are our friends, our family and they love us no matter what! Bring your pet for a Blessing or bring your memories of a special pet. SAVE THE DATE: Men’s Campout – September 23-24. Join other guys for this amazing time of fellowship starting Friday, September 23, at 1 pm with lunch, followed by an afternoon of hiking, fishing and target practice. Dinner is at 6:30 pm, followed by a spiritual lesson around the campfire. Stay the night and sleep under the stars on private land near Williamsburg, KS (about 1 hour south of RezDT). Enjoy breakfast together, more spirit-led discussion and be out by mid-day. Cash donations to help offset groceries will be collected in a free will donation at the event.
