Friday, August 19, 2016Pastor Penny Ellwood's eNote at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Blue Springs in Blue Springs, Missouri, United States for Friday, 19 August 2016
Greetings Resurrection Blue Springs,
I have loved seeing all the back to school pictures on facebook this week of the kids heading back to school. I know this is a week full of mixed emotions for most parents, especially for those sending children off to college or to their first day of kindergarten. I have been offering our prayer for children each day this week and thinking in particular of those transitioning into new classroom situations. It can be an anxious time for both parents and children.
The sheetrock dust has been flying this week as the construction crew makes headway on our building renovations. You can begin to get a sense of what the space is going to look like when it's all done now. It's exciting to see it coming together. Our hope is that it will be complete in time for the start of our new fall classes. Speaking of fall classes, I hope you've taken the chance to take a look at the classes we have starting soon.
If you've never taken a Bible Study, Alpha is a great place to start your discipleship journey. This is a 10 week introduction to the Christian faith that starts with a meal and ends each week with small group discussions where you can ask any question you might have. I'm excited that we're offering both Disciple 1 and 2 this fall too. Disciple 1 is a 24 week, overview of the Bible for those wanting to dig a little deeper into study with a small group. It is a prerequisite for Disciple 2, which is an indepth study of Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts. This will be a great extension of the sermon series on Moses that we're in right now. Bill and I are excited to be leading Disciple 2. We're also offering a great class for parents on Conscious Discipline. This class will help both parents and children respond to discipline challenges in the home.
Don't forget that tomorrow we have a morning of service planned at the KC Pet Project. We'll meet at the church at 10 am and travel to work at this no kill pet shelter. This Faithwork is open to school age on up. Then on Monday we have another opportunity to give with our Community Blood Center Drive. The donor bus will be in our parking lot from3:30 - 7 pm. There is a critical need for emergency blood right now in our city, so your donations would be of big help.
This week we will continue our sermon series on Moses with God's call on this reluctant prophet for his extraordinary job of freeing the Isrealites. We'll take a look at how God continue to extend these calls today. I hope you'll join us as we consider how God is calling each one of us to live into this next school year and this new season of ministry.
Be sure to take a close look below at all the classes we have starting soon. . .
August FaithWork On Saturday, August 20th, we need people to help at the Kansas City Pet Project. This is a No Kill animal shelter in Kansas City with the goal of having no homeless animals. We will work from 11am to 1pm, starting with a tour of the facility. We will meet at 10am at church for donuts and carpool/caravan to the site. The address is 4400 Raytown Rd, Kansas City, MO 64129.
