Greetings Men of the
Church of the Resurrection,
This past semester has been one of the busiest I have experienced in my almost 13 years at the church. In addition to teaching 5 or 6 times a week, I have 15 weddings to perform and lots of training sessions, conferences, one-on-one meetings, a book to finish and travel to complete. I'm ready for a rest. I hope to get through my "books to read this summer" stack, improve my golf game, get back to my portrait painting, catch up with past friends I have lost touch with, and most of all play with my 9 grandchildren.
Apart from a two-week vacation out of town, I'll still be working this summer, but at a slower pace. I hope you find some time this summer to rest. If our paths don't cross, may your summer be blessed and restful.
In Christ,
Jeff
Interview with Hank Reed
Tell us just a bit about yourself? Where is home? What kind of work do you do?
I am originally from Indiana, a born and raised Hoosier and alumnus of Indiana University. I moved to Overland Park for a job in 1988 and met Pam (who would become my wife) and we never left. We were married in 1992 and had our daughter Nicole, in 1994 and our son Connor, in 1996.
I moved here for a job as a property and casualty claims adjuster. I operated my own homebuilding company for fifteen years, and I have been back adjusting property insurance claims for the past six years.
What is your background regarding the Christian faith? Did you grow up in the faith or is this a newer discovery for you?
I grew up in the New Salisbury Methodist Church in New Salisbury, Indiana. Our church is a very old, very small building that was originally one room when it was built. I think there are less than about eight rows of pews with an aisle down the middle. When Pastor Adam speaks about churches in decline with aging congregations he is describing the New Salisbury United Methodist Church. I went to kindergarten in the basement of the church and was fairly active in Sunday School and more so in youth group through early high school. We were blessed to have youth group leaders who were very generous with their time and very patient with teens. Our Pastor at the time, Rev. Ray Rhoda, was also very active with the youth group.
I believe I was like many of my generation in that I drifted away from the church beginning in high school and continuing through college and beyond. My wife and I started returning to church at Faith Lutheran in Prairie Village. This was her family's church and where we were married. The Pastor, Tom Householder, was a wonderful teacher, speaker and all-around great guy. We were in church, but not fully engaged. We started coming to Resurrection in the early 2000's and through the years have been more off than on in our involvement.
Are there any highlights that have helped and inspired you recently in your faith Journey?
This winter and spring I have had four things that have dramatically altered my Journey in faith. They were all separate yet connected, and I believe they were working together. The first was The Alpha Course on Monday nights. The second was the Men's Retreat with James Bryan Smith (I know I would not have attended if it wasn't for Alpha). Third was a 4-week Saturday morning small group, with an incredible group of men from the Men's Retreat led by Jeff Kirby. The fourth that just wrapped up, the inaugural class of The Prayer Course.
When The Alpha Course began I think I approached it on an educational or scholarly level. Somewhere around the Alpha Retreat and the Men's Retreat I started to understand the difference between being a "fan" of Christ and being a follower. It was at that point that I became passionate about my Faith, and everything seems just a little more clear. I have been blessed by each of these experiences and I am a better person, father and husband because of them. I am looking forward to what is next and how I can grow deeper in my faith.
