Beth Immanuel Newsletter for Av 5774 - August 2014 - Shalom Beth Immanuel e-Community!

Beth Immanuel Newsletter for Av 5774 - August 2014 - Shalom Beth Immanuel e-Community!
Welcome to the month of Av.
The Nine Days
Last Monday, July 28, was Rosh Chodesh Av, the beginning of the month of Av and the beginning of the “nine days” culminating in the fast of Tisha be'Av (the 9th of Av): the anniversary of the destruction of the 1st and 2nd Temples in Jerusalem. Tisha be'Av is observed with a complete fast beginning before sunset on Monday evening August 4 and ending after sunset on Tuesday, July 5.
We observe partial mourning rites for the duration of the nine days. In view of the current upheaval in the land of Israel, the nine days are a good opportunity for us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, asking God to send our righteous Messiah a second time.
Levertoff Yahrzeit
Rosh Chodesh Av is the Yahrzeit (anniversary of death) of Paul Philip Levertoff (1878–1954). Paul Levertoff was an influential Messianic Jewish leader whose writings and teachings have been instrumental in shaping the teaching at Beth Immanuel. Listen to a sermon based on Levertoff’s writings: The Four Kindnesses
Learn about the man and his work in a teaching titled The Levertoff Legacy.
Tisha be’Av Service
Beth Immanuel will conduct a Tisha be’Av service featuring a reading of the book of Lamentations on Monday August 4, 8:30 PM.
The Greatest of these is Love
Catch up on Beth Immanuel’s summer of love and peace with the new series of teachings titled “The Greatest of these is Love.” These messages unpack the heart of the Gospel and Yeshua’s mandate to love God and to love your fellow.
Summer Bible Study: Paul’s Epistle to the Romans
Pastor Lancaster's Summer Bible study on Romans is underway. Classes meet Monday nights at 7:00 PM in the Beth Immanuel Library/Green Room (use the Orange Street entrance). Audio CD’s are available. Contact us if you are interested in obtaining CDs.
Chronicles of the Messiah
Pastor Lancaster’s comprehensive study on the gospels and the life of Yeshua is now complete in an all-new hard bound edition with additional essays, indices, charts, maps, and appendices. Consider adding Chronicles of the Messiah to your home or congregational library.
Elul and the Season of Teshuvah
Rosh Chodesh Elul occurs on August 26-27, beginning the season of repentance and the forty day count-down to Yom Kippur.
Rosh Hashanah and the Trumpet of Messiah
The High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are quickly approaching. At Beth Immanuel, the men’s choir is already rehearsing for the High Holiday liturgies. Make plans now to join us for our stellar Rosh Hashanah services, and stay for Shabbat Shuvah that Saturday. Consider it a mini-conference with teaching about Rosh Hashanah and the Second Coming of Yeshua from D. Thomas Lancaster, Aaron Eby, and other speakers (tba): Wednesday through Saturday, September 24-27. Click here for details.
Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur this year falls on the Sabbath. Our Kol Nidrei service begins at 6:00 PM, Friday, October 3. Services on Saturday October 4 begin at 9:00 AM.
