Leawood, Kansas, United States - The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection eNote from Pastor Adam Hamilton for Friday, 1 August 2014
Dear Resurrection Family,
We made it back from our journey in the footsteps of Paul on Tuesday night. Our last few days were in Rome where we explored the sites associated with the last two years of Paul's life. I'll show you these places via video this weekend.
I was in the office on Wednesday and Thursday for meetings during which time I had the blessing of holding Pastor Anne Williams new little baby, Jude. Many of you were praying for him and for Anne and Eric. He was in Children's Mercy Hospital after having seizures just after his birth. Anne and Eric have been so grateful for your prayers for Jude.
These last two weekends of summer, and the days in between, I'm focused on reading and outlining the fall sermons. I've got about 2,000 pages of reading for the Paul series in September/October. I'm also working on the outlines for the upcoming series I start in two weeks on The Power of the Tongue (or the Power of Words) looking at how our words have the power to bless or curse, build up or tear down, heal or to destroy. This is a huge theme in the scriptures and relates to every part of our lives. I'll kick that series off two weeks from tomorrow.
This weekend you'll be blessed as our Congregational Care pastors have the opportunity to preach at Leawood. Most of you attend the same service 70% of the time. We assign our congregational care pastors a specific service they assist with as their regular "congregation." You see them in that service every week. Our aim is that you have a connection with these pastors. We now divide up congregational care assignments based upon the service you attend so that the pastor who sees you when you have a need is someone you already know from worship. This weekend one of the two pastors assigned to the service you attend will preach at that service, giving you a chance to hear them proclaim the scriptures and giving them a chance to minister to you in this way. They are excited and I know you'll be blessed.
Also this weekend at Leawood we're also showing the hit Disney movie, Frozen. The film won two academy awards and took in $1.2 billion worldwide. It is a great family film, but one that adults will enjoy even if they don't have kids. I watched it recently and there are some wonderful Christian themes. The film will show in our sanctuary at 6:30 pm. It is free and we'll have free popcorn and bottled water. Please feel free to invite your friends and neighbors or small group and enjoy the show!
This week I'm doing a webinar with Abingdon Press on my upcoming book, Revival: Faith as Wesley Lived It. The book is based upon the sermon series I preached by that name last fall, and my trip to England last summer. I'm really excited about the small group videos – in them I take small groups on a tour of Wesley's England. My hope is that this little book helps Christians from a Wesleyan background (United Methodists, Free Methodists, Nazarenes, Wesleyans and AME and AME Zion denominations) learn about Wesley and his message and how this Wesleyan heritage continues to shape our faith today. The webinar is a video cast where people log in-online and can ask questions and hear about the study and video. If you are a pastor reading my e-note, or are responsible for discipleship in your church, or if you are a small group leader or just someone interested in hearing more, join me on Thursday, August 7 at 2 pm CDT by going to www.ministrymatters.com/revival or www.spreecast.com/events/revival-live-event-with-adam-hamilton. You don't need a spreecast account to watch, but if you want to ask questions you'll need to create one. I'm excited about this.
When I arrived back in the office on Wednesday I found a huge stack of birthday cards waiting for me, and two large notebooks filled with birthday greetings from you, our congregation. I've read each birthday card and prayed for each person who sent me a card (a practice I have at birthdays and Christmas). I'll be reading the bound notebooks in the coming weeks, a few pages each day. This really blessed me. Thank you!
Finally, in case you missed my 2 minute teaser segments I filmed in Turkey, Greece and Italy that were shown in worship the last couple of weekends (Rome's segment will be shown this weekend), you can click on the respective location to see these short teasers meant to give you a taste of where I'll take you this fall. Turkey, Greece, Italy
Blessings!
Adam Hamilton
