Invitation to Prayer for General Conference 2016
The United Methodist Church
Los Angeles Episcopal Area
Minerva G. Carcaño
Resident Bishop
Brothers and sisters,
Since January 1 of this year United Methodists from around the world have been praying without ceasing for our upcoming 2016 General Conference. Each of our 131 annual conferences across the U.S., Europe, Africa and the Philippines was given a 24 hour period to pray for General Conference. The assigned day for our California-Pacific Conference is May 1.
Would you join me in praying for our 2016 General Conference? I am committed to helping us launch our 24 hour prayer vigil for GC by praying that first hour on May 1from midnight to 1 am. Whom shall I pass the prayer baton to at 1 am? Might there be others of you who would be willing to pray with me from midnight to 1 am? Help me fill our 24 hours in prayer for our General Conference.
The General Conference is the top policy-making body of The United Methodist Church, and meets once every four years to determine our denomination's future direction, consider revisions to our church law, and approve plans and budgets for church-wide programs. The 2016 meeting will take place May 10-20 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon. It is a critical gathering for our church and our mission and ministry.
The California-Pacific Annual Conference elected an outstanding delegation to represent it at the 2016 General Conference. You can find the members of our delegation via the button below. Pray for them and all of the 864 delegates who will be at General Conference. Pray for the Commission on General Conference as it leads the General Conference, those who will staff the General Conference, translators, hospitality teams, the workers in the hotels and the restaurants where our delegates will make their home and be fed during their working days at General Conference, those who will be sending forth the newscasts from the daily proceedings and the many who will be active observers. Pray for our Council of Bishops as they extend spiritual support to the General Conference. Pray for the Oregon-Idaho Conference as it hosts this General Conference and for the over 1,000 volunteers from across the Western Jurisdiction who will be assisting them.
Our Annual Conference Worship Team has prepared a resource for you to use in your local churches on May 1 as you pray for our 2016 General Conference. Download the resource via the button below.
Pastors, please work with your church leaders to organize your prayer vigil participation. Help us pray over the 24 hours of May 1, and especially during your worship service that morning.
May the Holy Spirit breathe life into our prayers and bless our 2016 General Conference that we United Methodists may be faithful and fruitful.
Your sister in Christ,
Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño
