Family Caregivers Become More Crucial as Elderly Population Grows

"Another bipartisan bill, introduced in Congress in March, calls for a tax credit of up to $3,000 for eligible family caregivers. Advocates are optimistic. 'At least a couple pieces of legislation seem to have some legs,' said Gail Gibson Hunt, the president and chief executive officer of the National Alliance for Caregiving, a nonprofit coalition dedicated to the issue."
Can Family Caregivers Reduce Hospital Costs?

Key Workplace Flexibility Bill For Family Caregivers Passes Illinois Senate

The key provisions of HB 6162 include: defines family member broadly to reflect the reality of the caregiving situation; allows employees to use 6 months of accrued sick leave benefits for a family member's illness, injury or medical appointment; Provides that all of an employer's conditions and policies around sick leave benefits continue to apply, and; provides that this flexibility does not change employee rights under FMLA, state family leave law, or employer's disability plan.

[New Research] The Spectrum of Caregiving in Palliative Care for Serious, Advanced, Rare Diseases: Key Issues and Research Directions

The panel identified gaps in current knowledge, and afforded suggestions for research opportunities in palliative care science to improve the care of individuals with serious, advanced, rare diseases and their caregivers. This meeting provided an in-depth opportunity to incorporate new concepts into palliative and end-of-life care for individuals with a range of rare diseases and their caregivers. This report presents a summary of the workshop.
