From Pastor Molly: prayers for the world
Again this week, acts of terror and violence have broken our hearts: 44 people died after an airport attack in Istanbul on Tuesday night. The chief executive of our United Methodist Board of Global Ministries, Thomas Kemper, was at the Turkish airport during the attack, and his words invite us to careful reflection on how we react to such violence. He named his own gratitude for the gifts of family and community, and reflected how such violence "leads us into deeper solidarity with all who experience terror and violence not just once but every day and every night.”
It's tempting to begin to tune out the stories of tragedy in the world, and isolate ourselves in a kind of self-protection. But the Gospel invites us to listen. To weep with those who weep, and to care for one another. We are reminded that all of us, together, are God's children, and of incalculable worth.
We pray for those most closely affected, and for all, anywhere who grieve. May we be a part of what God is doing to bring peace to our troubled world.[Pastor Molly Vetter]
This week our Children's Ministry continues summer Fun-Day School! The kids will start in worship, then leave after the Children's Time to do an activity together. They'll join us again for Communion and the end of worship. Please invite friends!
This week I continue a three part sermon series: Go. Each week, I'll share a story from Luke's gospel, where Jesus sends us out into lives of action and faith.
Our church office will be closed Monday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

Luke 10:1-11, 16-20
"Go: a packing list"
Scripture Text:
Luke 10:1 After this, the Lord appointed seventy other talmidim and sent them on ahead in pairs to every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 He said to them, “To be sure, there is a large harvest. But there are few workers. Therefore, plead with the Lord of the Harvest that he speed workers out to gather in his harvest. 3 Get going now, but pay attention! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Don’t carry a money-belt or a pack, and don’t stop to shmoose with people on the road.
5 “Whenever you enter a house, first say, ‘Shalom!’ to the household. 6 If a seeker of shalom is there, your ‘Shalom!’ will find its rest with him; and if there isn’t, it will return to you. 7 Stay in that same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for a worker deserves his wages — don’t move about from house to house.
8 “Whenever you come into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is put in front of you. 9 Heal the sick there, and tell them, ‘The Kingdom of God is near you.’ 10 But whenever you enter a town and they don’t make you welcome, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off as a sign against you! But understand this: the Kingdom of God is near!’
16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me, also whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the One who sent me.”
17 The seventy came back jubilant. “Lord,” they said, “with your power, even the demons submit to us!” 18 Yeshua said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Remember, I have given you authority; so you can trample down snakes and scorpions, indeed, all the Enemy’s forces; and you will remain completely unharmed. 20 Nevertheless, don’t be glad that the spirits submit to you; be glad that your names have been recorded in heaven.”
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Luke 10:1-11, 16-20
Verse 3
[3] Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
Matthew 10:16.
Verse 4
[4] Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
Salute no man by the way — The salutations usual among the Jews took up much time. But these had so much work to do in so short a space, that they had not a moment to spare.
Verse 6
[6] And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
A son of peace — That is, one worthy of it.
Verse 7
[7] And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
Matthew 10:11.
Verse 11
[11] Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
The kingdom of God is at hand — Though ye will not receive it.
[16] He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
Matthew 10:40; John 13:20.
Verse 18
[18] And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
I beheld Satan — That is, when ye went forth, I saw the kingdom of Satan, which was highly exalted, swiftly and suddenly cast down.
Verse 19
[19] Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
I give you power — That is, I continue it to you: and nothing shall hurt you - Neither the power, nor the subtilty of Satan.
Verse 20
[20] Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
Rejoice not so much that the devils are subject to you, as that your names are written in heaven - Reader, so is thine, if thou art a true, believer. God grant it may never be blotted out!

"Behold The Lamb Of God" (from Messiah) by G F Handel
"The Prayer" by David Foster and Carol Bayer Sager
I pray you'll be our eyes, and watch us where we go
And help us to be wise in times when we don't know
Let this be our prayer, when we lose our way
Lead us to the place, guide us with your grace
To a place where we'll be safe
I pray we 'Il find your light, and hold it in our hearts
When stars go out each night,
Remind us where you are
Let this be our prayer, when shadows fill our day
Help us find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we'll be safe
A world where pain and sorrow will be ended
And every heart that's broken will he mended
And we'll remember we are all God's children
Reaching out to touch you
Reaching to the sky
We ask that life be kind, and watch us from above
We hope each soul will find another soul to love
Let this be our prayer, just like every child
Who needs to find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we'll be safe
Needs to find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we'll be safe

Last Sunday (6/26) we were treated to a grand performance of an historic postlude by substitute organist Eileen Raycroft, wife of church Music Director Jim Raycroft. Her performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor' was as good as one can hear on any church organ.
The music made our floors shake, our sanctuary a musical instrument and her technique shine in unbelievable ways. For those who have never heard it before it must have been a revelation. As Jim's musical notes said, it's been used by Hollywood several times so many have heard it played, not just for organ, for which it was written, but for orchestra and many other musical groups. Pretty good for a musical composer named Bach (1685-1750). Thanks to the Raycrofts for this musical treat.
Today is the week-end celebrating our country's Fourth of July and if it is hot, the beaches will be crowded, the parking difficult and our coastal paradise enjoyed by extra thousands all day and at night. Fortunately, church is early enough to have parking available so don't miss it. With many in the air or on the road traveling, we are already at a great destination just two blocks from the sea. What a great church we have. When we greet each other saying “Peace be with you”, we really mean it.
Look elsewhere for announcements about next Sunday's Pot-luck luncheon and plan to attend July 10th. Perhaps you'll meet a new friend who will change your life, or perhaps, theirs.

Thursday, June 30, 2016 - Music Notes by Jim Raycroft

When Handel wrote the Messiah in about 3 weeks, he was doing something unique, at least for him. Handel was a composer who liked to reuse material, and so reused his melodies, themes and motifs over and over again. You can hear very familiar sounding melodies in all of his oratorios and operas. But the Messiah stands alone. There are examples of music from other sources in the Messiah – the primary melody in the choral movement “For Unto Us A Child Is Born”, for example, was originally an Italian folk song about a cat. But he didn’t reuse any material from the Messiah in any other piece of music he wrote. He clearly felt that the Messiah was something special. Most of us feel the same way. “Behold The Lamb Of God” is the first piece of the second half of most Messiah performances.
“The Prayer” was written by David Foster and Carol Bayer Sager, with input and Italian translations from Alberto Testa and Tony Renis. The original English version was recorded by Celine Dion, and the original Italian version was recorded by Andrea Bocelli. They first appeared in the soundtrack for the movie “Quest For Camelot” in 1998, a soundtrack that I also sang in, and then the duet version was released a few months later on separate albums by both artists. The song won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, and was nominated for an Oscar in 1999 for Best Original Song and a Grammy in 2000 for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. This Sunday, we’ll hear the solo version by our wonderful soprano, Julie Brody.
Last week was the last day of our series “Famous Postludes”, during which Eileen blew the roof off the church with the famous, and infamous, Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. If you enjoyed the series, let us know and we’ll plan another one later in the fall.
We welcome back our wonderful accompanist MaryAnn from a 2 week stint in Nebraska, where she was accompanying masterclasses in Lincoln.

The California-Pacific Conference has introduced Safe Gatherings, an online abuse prevention program that screens and educates staff and volunteers to help prevent abuse of children, youth, and vulnerable adults in group settings.
Our congregation's staff and volunteers are participating in this program which includes an application, background check, and the online training every three years. (Some of you may have already received invitations to participate in the screening or provide a reference for one of our volunteers.)
We are excited to be a part of this new program as we continue to grow and offer a safe space for all.

We have many spots to fill for liturgists on Sunday mornings. The following link will take you the sign up. Please check it out.
