Weekly eNote from Senior Pastor Adam Hamilton from The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, United States for Friday, 2 September 2016

Dear Resurrection Family,
This weekend, we’ll have inspiring worship on all of our campuses. At Leawood, we’ll continue our series on Moses. Shortly after liberating the Israelites from slavery in Egypt God gave instructions to Moses to build a portable sanctuary called the Tabernacle and also the Tent of Meeting. The Israelites would carry this tent, representing God’s dwelling in their midst, during their forty-year sojourn in the wilderness. We’ll have a replica of the Tabernacle set up in the Narthex this weekend for you to walk through to learn about the customs and rituals of worship in the Torah. This is a great family activity. Rev. Jeff Kirby will be preaching in the Chapel and Sanctuary services and our young adult pastor, Chris Abel, will be in Vibe. It’s going to be a great weekend of worship. If you are out of town, join us online. You can also take a self-guided tour of the Tabernacle model on Tuesday and Wednesday next week from 10 am - 8 pm.
We’ll have special music in all of our services this weekend, but as a treat at our 5 pm evening services at our Leawood campus we are excited to feature Contemporary Christian artist Jason Gray. Jason has been in full time music ministry since 1999, releasing his first album in 2006. He has emerged as a songwriter of extraordinary depth, with noteworthy ability to convey deep theological truths in engaging three and a half minute songs. Jason’s latest radio hit is “Remind Me Who I Am” which he’ll be playing along with others.
In the past two weeks, we have had 324 new members join our church. At Leawood we had 144 households, 216 adults and 75 children join, at Blue Springs there were 8 new members, representing 2 households with 3 adults and 5 children; and Downtown we had 14 households, 18 adults and 6 children. Our new member’s names are at the bottom of this eNote. Please welcome them.
Thank you to everyone who supported our blood drives by donating and volunteering. On August 23 at RezWest, 62 donors gave 66 pints, and on August 29 and 30 at Leawood, 576 donors gave 585 pints. That’s a three-day total of 638 donors with 651 pints! (The gifts through the Double Red Cell (ALYX) and Plasma machines account for the fact that the units exceed the donors.) Resurrection Blue Springs has a blood drive scheduled for Sept 19, so our fall total will go even higher! Thank you to each of you who came to give the gift of life to others – I’m grateful for this act of Christian discipleship.
On Tuesday of this week, we co-sponsored a “Forum on the Racial Divide in Kansas City” with St. James United Methodist Church in Kansas City, Missouri. 800 +/- people attended the program at St. James – half from St. James and half from Resurrection. It was a powerful evening of honest conversation as we shared our experiences, listened to one another and talked about how our churches – united as followers of Jesus – can build bridges related to race in our city. We have a team with members from both churches that will be determining our next steps.
KiDSCOR is off to a great start this fall! However, they are still looking for a few more volunteers for the school year. This is a great opportunity to invest in the lives of kids and serve within the walls of the church, plus what could be better than hanging out with cool kids! Currently KiDSCOR is trying to fill 6 spots on Sunday at 5:00 working with babies, 11 spots on Sunday morning at 10:45 working with our Pre-K kids, and 12 spots working with our 2nd graders at the 9:00 am service. If you would like more information please contact kidscor@cor.org. Youth, parents, grandparents are all welcome to join in this service opportunity!
Are you ready to take a step toward growing in your faith this fall? Here are two opportunities:
  • Grow Night kicks off on Tuesday, September 6, at 6:30 pm. Every Tuesday, you’ll find a variety of classes, discussion groups and serving opportunities. You can check out what is offered on the website, or just show up in the Narthex of Building B and let one of our volunteers help you find the right fit for you. If you’re coming right from work, you can purchase a meal at the Spring Cafe (located in Building B) before class! If you need childcare, please register your children here.
  • If you are looking for a way to take that first step in your faith development I encourage you to consider the Alpha course. Alpha is open to anyone who has questions and wants to explore the Christian faith. You can learn more at the Alpha Open House on September 12 at 6:30 in the Student Center. You can also stop by the ministry tables in the Narthex this weekend or visit the website.
Our annual Sacred Steps 5K Walk-Run is Saturday, September 24 at 8 am. This is always a great opportunity to serve while having fun and improving your health, as all proceeds go towards providing clean water solutions in Malawi. I hope you and your family, friends and neighbors might join us for this event that is a time of great fellowship, fun and a chance to change the world. The walk-run ends at the Leawood campus with great food and fellowship. You can sign up after worship this weekend, or on the website.
Have a great holiday weekend!
Adam Hamilton
