This Week in Caregiving from the National Alliance for Caregiving
Here are the highlights from this week's news in family caregiving:
Kaiser Health News | September 29, 2016
"According to a long-awaited report on family caregiving from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, which acknowledges that the nearly 18million caregivers for older adults are routinely marginalized and ignored within the health care system. The panel has called for extensive changes to the health care system, including a family-centered approach to care that would recognize caregivers' essential contribution. What might that look like, practically, from a caregiver's perspective? The report doesn't say, but recommendations can be extrapolated from its findings."
New Mexico State University News Center | September 28, 2016
"A groundbreaking report released this month by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine finds that much more support is needed in order to address the needs of both older adults and the nearly 18 million family members who provide care. Donna Wagner, dean of the College of Health and Social Services at New Mexico State University, served on an Institute of Medicine panel of experts that conducted the comprehensive, two-year study of family caregiving in the U.S."
Modern Healthcare | September 29, 2016
"Family caregiving is not what it once was. Informal duties like accompanying someone to the doctor's office have evolved into tasks that more or less constitute skilled nursing care. Family members now clean the wounds of their loved ones, dispense medications and try to sort out questions about side effects."
