PNG Nazarenes send first W&W team to VanuatuThe Church of the Nazarene in Papua New Guinea celebrated a milestone last month as they sent their first Work & Witness team to another country. From the end of March until the second week of April, the Chimbu/Eastern Highlands District W&W team raised funds for airfare and traveled to Vanuatu to work on the district center.
Over the years, many Work & Witness teams have traveled to Papua New Guinea to participate in various projects, including construction, evangelism, and medical ministry. PNG churches and communities are grateful for these teams' blessings and wanted to pass them on to others.
In preparation for the trip, the Chimbu/Eastern Highlands District raised more than 50,000 Kina (US$15,762).
“This is worth celebrating,” said Harmon Schmelzenbach, MSP field strategy coordinator. "This is what we’ve been praying for … and God has been faithful to respond to the hearts and the efforts of this great Work & Witness team of Nazarenes from Chimbu/Eastern Highlands!”
The team was led by Mundi Dama with the help of Adam Peterson, Melanesia-South Pacific field W&W coordinator. Vanuatu District Superintendent Peter Isaac was in charge of overseeing the project in the area.
“We are excited to see Papua New Guinean Nazarenes moving upward and outward like never before as they continue to advance into strong Kingdom leadership, reflecting the heart of Christ and partnering with God for His glory and the expansion of His Kingdom!” Schmelzenbach said.

Chile, South America Region
Chile faces frequent natural disasters because of seismic and volcanic activity. These include earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and mega-fires.
In 2010, a violent earthquake triggered several tsunamis, and in 2014 the country experienced a string of more than 300 earthquakes in one week. In the past 30 days alone, the country has experienced 45 earthquakes of varying magnitude.
“Suffering makes us equal,” said Alessandro Polonio, holistic ministry coordinator for JESUS Film Harvest Partners in Chile. It is during those times the church has to manifest and express the love of God towards our brothers and sisters in the faith, but all people in general."
But retaining people’s attention after a disaster is a challenge.
“Many times a society will respond to a catastrophe, but two days later something bigger may come up and they will forget about the disaster," Polonio said. "One of the responsibilities of the church is to help at all times, not just when the news is big and when it first comes up. We need to be there during all of their suffering.”
The Chilean church is working with Nazarene Compassionate Ministries in collaboration with other ministries to provide relief during difficult times and “more than just giving temporary relief, we have a transformation message,” Polonio said.
After a disaster, there’s often no way to communicate via telephone or email, and travel to the disaster location is necessary. JESUS Film teams are often already in place across the country and are able to provide support through their equipment and access to the location where the disaster occurred, often via JFHP-funded motorbikes.
“JESUS Film teams’ motorcycles are able to help us reach those places in a fast way," Polonio said. "Even though the terrain of roads will be difficult to access due to earthquakes, motorcycles are able to get to where vehicles may not. That allows us to have firsthand information from people and also quickly coordinate help.”
Risk prevention, medical, and communications personnel collaborated alongside the Church of the Nazarene to develop disaster relief kits as a way to demonstrate the love of God in a time of disaster to Chileans.
The kits include items such as first aid supplies, a radio, a flashlight, and a blanket. Polonio said they also try and include a Bible in every kit in order to make spiritual aid available to people. Most recently, the kits were used in the early winter wildfire that decimated more than 300,000 acres of forest across the country.
Polonio said one of the kit's strengths is their adaptability. During the wildfire, they were able to pack the kits with burn treatment ointments and creams at the government’s request.
The church is able to connect care and resources with the people and area in need.
“We have a district coordinator; many times all churches in the country gather resources and send it to where the disaster is happening," Polonio said. "We always do it through the nearest local church because the vision is there would be follow-up."
The Chilean church has been living out what it means to bear one another’s burden. Polonio said the church can pray for Chile in several ways: receptivity to the message of Christ, wisdom in how to share the good news during a disaster, more workers, empathy, and protection for leaders.
His final request is “for more doors to open for the gospel.”[JESUS Film Harvest Partners]

Oklahoma church raises funds to repair vintage bus for youth ministryOklahoma City First Church of the Nazarene is looking to resurrect a very special bus that helped the church reach youth in need of spiritual development.
The church at 4400 Northwest Expressway has a spiritual heritage that touched the lives of thousands of young people in Oklahoma City from the 1930s to 1960s.
Now they're looking to repair a bus from that era to help today's youth.

Oklahoma City First Church of the Nazarene is looking to resurrect a very special bus that helped the church reach youth in need of spiritual development.
The church at 4400 Northwest Expressway has a spiritual heritage that touched the lives of thousands of young people in Oklahoma City from the 1930s to 1960s.
Now they're looking to repair a bus from that era to help today's youth.
To understand how special this bus is to the church, it's important to look to the past.
Decades ago, a faithful member, the late Clifford Ray, led a charge to help boys who lived near the church's previous building at Sixth Street and Francis Avenue.
Many of the boys who lived in the area were described in one newspaper article of the era as "shoe shiners, ballpark vendors, errand runners, weed cutters in the summer and snow shovelers in the winter."
Some of the underprivileged boys came from broken and unchurched homes. Ray, and others in the church, developed an outreach for them that was known as the Straight-shooter program. Eventually, a program for girls was formed and called Livewires.
For the Straight-shooters, Ray would pick up boys in his old work truck and conduct a Sunday school program. Picnics, sports and trips became a part of this experience as Ray blended Bible and Christian lessons with fun activities.
The boys who had faithfully read and learned their Bible lessons would get to go camping. Sometimes they would go to places of natural splendor such as Yellowstone, Carlsbad Caverns and the Grand Canyon.
Ray's truck was replaced by a bus and eventually, with help from the church, three buses. For years, the buses carried the youths, and miraculously, one of the fleet survived.
One of the Straight-shooters alumni, Stan Seaton, spotted the nonworking bus in the 1980s and took possession of it. For years, he had it near his property in the north metro area near Waterloo Road. It sat for decades.
After Seaton passed away, his wife offered to donate the bus to Oklahoma City First Church of the Nazarene. The church accepted last summer and ascertained what it might cost to repair it.
Ed Neuenschwander, physics chair at Southern Nazarene University, offered to examine it. He said he will work on it if the church gets the proper funding. They hope to have the bus ready for next school year.
There are still needs
The Rev. Jon Middendorf, the church's current pastor, said the Straight-shooter ministry began to wane in the early 1960s. It was officially over when the church made its move from downtown to the Northwest Expressway in the late 1960s.
While the youth of today may not be shoe shine boys, there are still needs, Middendorf said in a letter to former Straight-shooters, who are now adults. The letter was part of his appeal for help from Straight-shooters to help fund the much-needed bus repairs.
"The children in our community are in need of positive role models and the tangible love of Christ," he wrote. "Many lack a means of transportation."
The church offers an after-school program now for about 25 children, who live nearby. The program offers a secure place where children can be mentored and fed. The church currently has one van that transports the children.
By adding the bus, the church can double the number of children it helps, the pastor said. He added it would be very special to do that in a bus that had brought God into the lives of young people decades before
The church already has named the vintage bus "Ed," after the SNU professor who hopes to restore it.
Years from now today's young people might have the same kind of testimony former Straight-shooter Joe Walker gave in a written testimony.
At age 13, in the 1940s, he joined the Straight-shooters and not too long after gave his life to Christ. He wrote about the lessons he learned and the lifetime friendships he formed.
"All of us married Christian women, which all lasted 50 years or more," he said.
That's the kind of impact Middendorf is hoping for with this latest youth outreach.
He said it will cost an estimated $11,000 to fix the bus. Almost $5,000 has been raised, but another $6,000 is needed.
"Some people ask me, why not just buy a new bus," Middendorf said. "Whatever new bus you buy will cost more than this. Also, we're not looking to take this to Yellowstone. We want to use it for the neighborhoods near the church."
He urged anyone wanting to help this special project to consider donating to the effort.
"If we go over our total, we'll look at replacing the van," he said.

Flags of the Nations: SenegalThe Senegal flag is a vertical tricolour of green, yellow, and red with a green star at the center. Red, yellow, and green are the official Pan-African colors, and the centered star is symbolic of hope and unity.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.

The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Senegal in 1988.
Senegal had a population of 14,320,055 in 2016. That same year, Senegal reported eight Churches of the Nazarene, two of which had been officially organized. Senegal has 320 total members.

The Global Church of the Nazarene News: ANU leader announces retirement - The Globasl Nazarene Communication Network News in Lenexa, United States "This This week in the Church of the Nazarene..." for Friday, 21 April 2017
Nairobi, Kenya
Marangu announces retirement from Africa Nazarene UniversityAfter 21 years of dedicated service to Africa Nazarene University, Vice Chancellor Leah T. Marangu is setting her sights on retirement.
During her tenure, the university grew in both student enrollment and academic and professional program offerings, increasing from 63 to nearly 4,000 students and from three to 46 programs in several disciplines. ANU has also increased its global footprint through the eNaz distance learning platform and strengthened its brand.
“Above all, Prof. Marangu has been keen to impart our values of character and the integrity of heart to all those who walked through the university doors in various capacities,” said Filimao Chambo, Africa regional director for the Church of the Nazarene. “She has been intensely focused strategically, totally committed to maintaining and enhancing our university’s stellar reputation in research, teaching and learning, character formation, and community outreach.”
Marangu came to the position with a wealth of knowledge, experience, and expertise in university education, previously serving as a founding member at the Commission for Higher Education (now Commission for University Education); chair of the Department of Home Economics at Kenyatta University; chair of the Board of Directors at the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation; a member of the task force that created Egerton University, and the longest-serving Senate representative to Kenyatta University Council, where she served for 11 years after its inception.
“Vice Chancellor Marangu is an outstanding leader and has contributed significantly to the development of ANU and Global Nazarene Higher Education,” said Dan Copp, commissioner of the denomination’s International Board of Education. “I encourage our global Nazarene family to be praying for Professor Marangu, the ANU community, and the vice chancellor search process in this important time of transition.”
As ANU’s first female professor, Marangu remains a role model for women in academia and helped create career paths for women like Olive Mugenda, previous vice chancellor of Kenyatta University; Margaret Kobia, chair of the Public Service Commission, and several sitting deputy vice chancellors in Kenya today.
Marangu has been recognized globally for her efforts, receiving 20 national and international awards for leadership. She received two head of state commendations — the Silver Star of Kenya and the Moran of the order of the Burning Spear. Marangu was also awarded the Women Leadership Award by the World Women Leadership Congress & Awards in Mumbai, India, as well as the Global Peace Strengthening Family Award by Global Peace. In addition, she received the Maggie Sloan Crawford Role Model Award from Olivet Nazarene University for her efforts on issues related to women and girls.
Academically, Marangu is a Fulbright scholar, a visiting professor to 11 U.S. universities, a member of 27 international bodies, and author of 20 international publications and 46 featured articles. She was the first African to receive the Achievement Citation Award from Iowa State University and an honourary Doctor of Letters and the “O” award signifying outstanding alumni from Olivet Nazarene University. She is also an honourary alumna of Kenyatta University, where she was recognized for Professional Exemplary Service and Mentorship in the Advancement of Education.
The ANU Council and Board are grateful for Marangu’s “outstanding, visionary, and wise leadership” and have initiated steps to ensure a smooth transition. The Council appointed a recruitment committee to lead the search process. The council continues its support of Marangu as she completes her tenure of service 31 October 2017.

HaRelejoe, Lesotho
Nazarenes help Lesotho village fulfill decades-long wish for schoolMore than 20 years ago, a chief from the HaRelejoe village in Lesotho asked then-missionary Dale Stotler and a Church of the Nazarene pastor to build a church in his village. A Work & Witness team built a simple church structure, then the chief asked the team to come back and build a school.
It was always the chief's dream to have a school in his village to serve local children and those who live in villages or remote mountainside areas far away from available schools in larger villages or the capital, Maseru.
In recent years, local leaders and the Nazarene district superintendent worked with missionaries to build a school, train teachers, and get the facilities for the school up and running in this village. However, it had been decades since the chief first asked for a school.
As 2017 began, the chief, who is in his 80s, started to get sick. He knew the end was near. He told the assistant chief that if the school can just open and begin holding classes, he will be at peace to go home to be with the Lord.
On 23 January, the assistant chief excitedly told the chief the school finally opened and classes had begun. Later that day, the old chief passed into the arms of his Lord, knowing that the children of his village and surrounding areas now had access to Christian education. In a village where the chief is the authority, it became a bittersweet day.[Church of the Nazarene Africa via Out of Africa]

West Virginia church gives away 200 free pizzas and JESUS films
Teays Valley, West Virginia
West Virginia's Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene wanted to give something to their community Easter weekend that would be a visual of the true meaning of Easter.
"We are located directly on Teays Valley Road, which is a prime spot during high traffic hours," said Lead Pastor Charles Williams. "We came up with the idea to literally 'take the gospel to the streets' and partnered with one of our local pizza places to hand out 200 whole pizzas, along with 200 JESUS films."
The outreach was an opportunity to provide "dinner and a movie" on Maundy Thursday that got the message and gospel out beyond the church congregation.

For ONU baseball coach, faith, humility (and winning) come with the job
Bourbonnais, Illinois
(Kankakee Times, 14 April) Just call Todd Reid the humble winner.
On the one hand, Reid is good at amassing victories: He recently set the record for the most coaching wins in Olivet Nazarene University (ONU) baseball history, with 304. On the other hand, he doesn't want the attention, preferring it be focused on his players or the chance to talk about his predecessor and previous all-time wins leader Elliot Johnson
Or even that Reid's record also includes more than 300 losses.
“All it means really to me is that I'm getting old,” Reid told the Kankakee Times after his 300th win.
