It's Graduation Season - Some Thoughts from VA Office of Economic Opportunity for Friday, 12 May 2017 in Washington, D.C., United States
Colleagues and Fellow Veterans,
Graduation season is upon us! This is the time of year when thousands of Veterans using the GI Bill will close one chapter and begin another. We are proud to congratulate all students using the GI Bill to reach their educational goals. In fact, since 2009, VA has spent nearly $75 billion and enrolled 1,752,939 students under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
Veterans using the Post-9/11 GI Bill are earning degrees in business, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and health-related fields. Data shows that when compared to their peers, Veterans using the Post-9/11 GI Bill represent the some of the highest achievers in postsecondary education.
If you know a graduating Veteran who used the GI Bill – or if you are graduating this season – we want to celebrate this great achievement with you! Join the conversation online and share photos of graduates in graduation attire on Facebook and Instagram, using #GIBillGrad, so the world can see tomorrow’s leaders.
As well, check in with your School Certifying Official (SCO) to make sure they record your graduation for our records.
To all our graduating Veterans: We thank you for your service and we’re proud of your great achievement.
Congratulations, grad!

In the news: New Veterans Affairs Chief: A Hands-On, Risk-Taking ‘Standout’
Via the New York Times: "Dr. Shulkin came to the Veterans Affairs department expecting to find a less efficient copy of private health care that would be straightforward to streamline or even privatize. His first clinical visit, with an intoxicated double amputee Vietnam Veteran at a hospital in Manhattan, taught him that it would not be so easy."

Mother's Day a chance to highlight care in the Military Health System
Mother’s Day is a special time for Army Maj. Olivia Nunn. For years, she and her husband tried to have a baby.
“A child is considered a miracle,” said Nunn on her two years of trying to conceive. “Having a baby is something to celebrate every day.”
This year, the Army spokesperson at the Pentagon will be celebrating this special day with four-year-old daughter Sabella and the newest addition to the family, four-month-old son Gideon. Sabella was born in a small military hospital at West Point, New York, and Gideon entered the world at the much larger Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in suburban Washington, D.C. While their births in many ways were very different encounters for Nunn – small vs. large hospital, new mom vs. experienced – both were excellent events with a little help from the Military Health System.

Fueling with fluid
Service member drinking water
Optimal fueling includes staying well hydrated during exercise. Inadequate fluid intake can lead to dehydration that affects your mental and physical performance.
The first key is staying well hydrated throughout the day. If you start exercising with low fluid intake, you’re already behind. To stay hydrated, drink fluids such as water, 100% juice, milk or milk alternatives throughout the day. A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in fluid ounces. For example, a 150-lb warrior should drink 75 fluid ounces per day. Foods with high-water content count too! Some examples of high-water-content foods are fruits (especially grapes, watermelon, peaches), vegetables (zucchini, celery, cucumbers, tomatoes), yogurt, sherbet/sorbet, and soup.
