"Live by the Spirit" for Tuesday, 9 May 2017 with the Bible Reading: Romans 8:5-11 from the Deaf Devo of Deaf Missions in Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States
"Live by the Spirit" for Tuesday, 9 May 2017 with the Bible Reading: Romans 8:5-11 Romans 8:5 For those who identify with their old nature set their minds on the things of the old nature, but those who identify with the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 Having one’s mind controlled by the old nature is death, but having one’s mind controlled by the Spirit is life and shalom. 7 For the mind controlled by the old nature is hostile to God, because it does not submit itself to God’s Torah — indeed, it cannot. 8 Thus, those who identify with their old nature cannot please God.
9 But you, you do not identify with your old nature but with the Spirit — provided the Spirit of God is living inside you, for anyone who doesn’t have the Spirit of the Messiah doesn’t belong to him. 10 However, if the Messiah is in you, then, on the one hand, the body is dead because of sin; but, on the other hand, the Spirit is giving life because God considers you righteous. 11 And if the Spirit of the One who raised Yeshua from the dead is living in you, then the One who raised the Messiah Yeshua from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit living in you.

-------
I want to do things I enjoy. But sometimes my wife or son need me to do something for them. I can choose to please myself or to please my family.
Our Bible Reading today talks about priorities. These verses remind us that as Christians our first priority should be to think about what God's Holy Spirit wants us to do. "If your thinking is controlled by the Spirit, there is life and peace" (verse 6b). This means that we should not worry about satisfying ourselves. Instead, we should make right choices and live by the Spirit.
It is not always easy to live by the Spirit. But Jesus made this possible for us through His death on the cross. When we accept God's gift of salvation, He gives us His Spirit to help and comfort us every day.
What is most important in your life today? Will you live for yourself and your desires? Or will you live by the Spirit?
"Your body will always be dead because of sin. But if Christ is in you, then the Spirit gives you life, because Christ made you right
with God."
[Romans 8:10]
PRAYER: Father, I don't want to live for myself. I want to live by Your Spirit. In Jesus' name. Amen.

"Pay Attention to God" for Monday, 8 May 2017 with the Bible Reading: Psalm 65:1-5 from Deaf Devo of Deaf Missions in Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States
Psalm 65:(0) For the leader. A psalm of David. A song:
2 (1) To you, God, in Tziyon, silence is praise;
and vows to you are to be fulfilled.
3 (2) You who listen to prayer,
to you all living creatures come.
4 (3) When deeds of wickedness overwhelm me,
you will atone for our crimes.
5 (4) How blessed are those you choose and bring near,
so that they can remain in your courtyards!
We will be satisfied with the goodness of your house,
the Holy Place of your temple.
6 (5) It is just that you answer us with awesome deeds,
God of our salvation,
you in whom all put their trust,
to the ends of the earth and on distant seas.
-------
Take some time right now to quiet your thoughts and rest. This is a good time to focus on God and to pay attention to Him.
Maybe you pray to God throughout the day as you work and play. You praise Him, thank Him and ask Him to help you. But it is also important that you allow God to communicate with you. Do you ever really take time to stop and think about how God is answering your prayers? God can speak to us through our thoughts, through His Word, and through other Christians who teach and encourage us.
In our Bible Reading today, the writer is talking to God. He says, "Anyone can come to you, and you will listen to their prayers. God, you answer our prayers and do what is right" (verses 2 and 5a). We can pray to God any time and in any place. And God will always pay attention to us.
Take time to pray to God today. And then let Him speak to you.
"I speak to God morning, noon,
and night. I tell him what upsets
me, and he listens to me!"
[Psalm 55:17]
PRAYER: Father, thank You for loving me and communicating with me today. In Jesus' name. Amen.
