2 Pastor Brian’s Faith Works
I hope and pray that all of us find a deep, loving relationship with Jesus, where we are following wherever Jesus leads. Here are some of the paths I have seen as people respond to Jesus’ call, “Come, Follow Me.” The paths that begin with a desire to be a better human being. The paths of finding sobriety from addiction. The paths of life-long love and awareness of Jesus. The paths of sudden and dramatic conversion. The paths of intellectual curiosity. The paths of open-hearted, hard-working response to real human needs. The paths of appreciation of the God of Nature. The paths of service to the church. The paths of discovery of God’s Word and Words. The paths of prayer and contemplation. The paths of deep, honest conversation. So I am not anxious about your starting place or your route, but that from all corners of the earth we are responding to those words from Jesus, “Come, Follow Me.”

SAVE THE DATE: HOPE UMC “ALL CHURCH RETREAT”
Please save the date for our seventh annual “All Church Retreat” held at Camp Cedar Glen in Julian the weekend of September 22-24, 2017. The theme for this year’s retreat is “The ways that God is seen.” This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals and families to enjoy uplifting worship and music, outdoor activities, spiritual learning, great food, and spectacular outdoor scenery while surrounded by brothers and sisters in Christ. We are looking for volunteers to help plan this year’s retreat. Our next monthly planning meeting will be at the church on Wednesday, May 10th from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. on Covenant Hall #1.
Please contact Trey Glaze @ 678-524-2969 or treyglaze@gmail.com for more information.
3 MISSIONS CORNER
Two important notes: Welcome home to our Disaster Relief Team after a very productive trip to UMCOR West in Salt Lake City. Please see Cindy Gleason’s article about their efforts — thanks to all who went and supported them financially and in prayer! Also, thanks to Hope members who so generously filled the food cart during Lent. What a wonderful way to remember our Savior’s sacrifice by giving food to help others. Norma Dahlvig, who spearheads “Hope for Injured Warriors,” writes: “Calling all golfers! There are many tournaments coming up in the next few months to benefit the injured servicemen and women here in the San Diego area. It is time when you can meet and play golf with some of our injured warriors. Several amputees have taken up golf in their quest to return to a normal life. One plays with one arm and he is good. The tournaments, along with details, are posted on the warriorfoundation.org website. Having worked on many golf events for our warriors, they are a lot of fun, good prizes, reasonable rates at several different courses from La Costa, Rancho Santa Fe, RB Inn, Miramar Memorial Golf Course, and Coronado to name a few. In the near future, there are car shows and a delicious, all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast in Julian. It is well worth the drive where warriors will be onsite and there will be a parade in their honor. Thank you for all that you do for our warriors on a regular basis.”
Contact Norma for more information.
Our May Special Offering will go to Children of the Promise, Ninos de la Promesa, orphanage in Tijuana. It was started by Tyler and Connie Youngkin from Poway 17 years ago and is dedicated to rescuing street children in the red light district from sexual, physical and emotional abuse. The orphanage provides a home, education, and Christian values to these children, some of whom have even finished college and gone on to help others. Hope members have supported the orphanage for over a dozen years. Their current need is $20,000 to put a new roof on their building, update the wiring and plumbing, as well as improve safety features. For more information, please contact Sylvia Leighton—and help this worthy cause!
Our next Outreach/Missions Com. meeting is Mon. May 22, 7 PM, in Jones 6.
Join us! — Terry Sieck, Assistant Chr.

Bluegrass & BBQ
• Saturday, Aug 19
• 6 pm
We have a new bluegrass band this year! The Drought Tolerant Bluegrass Band is made up of 4 professional bluegrass players, who have been playing for up to 40 years! Other bluegrass groups they’ve been a part of include:
The Taildraggers, Gone Tomorrow, MohaviSoul, Late for Supper, and a coastal group called The Unstrung Heroes. Given Harrison is the founder of Drought Tolerant, and has been playing since 1974. We are very excited to have them! There’s all the brisket and fried chicken you can imagine, a potluck extravaganza, desserts, and amazing pies to raffle off throughout the evening. A free-will offering is highly encouraged so that we can continue this annual church-wide event. Bring your family, friends, loved ones, and appetite. We will be toe-tapping together with style! Health Kits provide basic necessities to people who have had their lives disrupted because of human conflict or natural disaster. Just being clean can help lift the spirits of someone in need! While we were there, UMCOR-West received over 40, 000 items to begin working on more kits in the upcoming months. In Jan, Missions donated $1500 to UMCOR-West. The Disaster Relief Team gave an additional $1500 from funds donated during Alternative Christmas and Heart for Hope. The money goes directly to purchasing more supplies to create more pallets to give Hope to others. In addition to the kits, Sharon Wade and Shirley Ferrill worked in the sewing room. They completed 20 school bags and 10 gowns. The items were hung on the wall in the sewing room. The team gathered and prayed the “Sewing Room Prayer. “ Also, John McWhinney, Winston Wade, and Ted Saunders donated their time working on an addition being built to the sewing room. The sewing room is being enlarged to help create more items for children. One of the great things about volunteering at UMCOR-West is there is something for everyone! As the HDRT chair, I would like to thank the Hope congregation for your support and prayers and the team members for their personal contributions, and commitments in making this trip to help so many possible. I posted several pictures on the Hope UMC Facebook page of the week. You will see bits of the warehouse and lots of smiles. The team would welcome you if you are interested in joining us next year. Please contact me at jimcyn73@hotmail.com and SAVE THE DATE: We are looking forward to our next trip to UMCOR-West in 2018 — the week of April 15th to continue being the hands and feet of Christ and helping others.
4 ONE JOB AT A TIME — Cindy Gleason
Most Gracious and Loving God, We come together to do Your work: One Item at a time, One Pallet at a time, to serve One person at a time; who is One from the multitude of your children in need across the world, Amen. Pallet Prayer — UMCOR West The Hope Disaster Relief Team (HDRT) made their 7th trip to UMCOR-West in Salt Lake City during the week of April 23rd 2017. The team was smaller this year but accomplished a great deal! The team of 7 included Hope members, Sharon and Wade Winston, Jim and Cindy Gleason, & John and Lynne McWhinney and National City UMC member, Shirley Ferrill. Ted Saunders, who now lives in Utah, stopped by to help out, too. Lots of work, praying, and fellowship packed into a short week. We may have been a small group, but we were united as a community working together to help others around the world. As a diverse group, the Team became blessed with new ideas, different talents, and new friends. It is with the spirit of the above Pallet Prayer that unites us to follow in Jesus’ steps to help others. During the week, the team assembled/finished the following kit 1,260 School Kits and over 120 Health Kits, 110 of the Health Kits were from the “Heart for Hope” kits donated in February by members of Hope. We also left extra supplies of soap, toothbrushes, band aids, nail clippers, combs, wash cloths, and plastic bags. As each pallet was completed, the team laid hands and prayed the above Pallet Prayer. After each prayer, we all shout, “When the earth rocks, UMCOR Rolls” About the kits: School Kits are being distributed to children affected by disaster. In some instances, the school kits are the only school supplies a child has. In addition, having the school supplies creates a sense of “normalcy” for the children.
