Here are the highlights from this week's news in family caregiving:
"Boot camp" helps Alzheimer's, dementia caregivers take care of themselves, too
Kaiser Health News | May 9, 2017
"Doctors and researchers increasingly recognize that caring for people with dementia compromises the physical and mental health of the caregivers. And that, in turn, jeopardizes the well-being of the people they are caring for. Some studies have shown that the burden on caregivers may increase the likelihood that the loved ones in their charge will be placed in a nursing home."
Fidelity launches 529-able accounts, tax-free savings for disability expenses
Forbes | May 10, 2017
"An estimated seven million disabled Americans are eligible for new 529-ABLE accounts, which let them save tax-free for disability expenses and not jeopardize government benefits, but only 10,000 or so accounts have been opened so far, according to the ABLE National Resource Center. Fidelity Investments see an opportunity."

Medscape | May 8, 2017
"Palliative care has much to offer in situations involving overburdened families and compromised family caregivers. The palliative care philosophy is based on family-centered care, including an assessment of family caregiver needs. The future of healthcare will be overshadowed by the ever-aging population, occurring at a time when more care is shifting to the home, with family caregivers providing the vast majority of care.[1] Palliative care has much to offer as the lines between "patient" and "caregiver" increasingly blur ."
