"My Hope is Built on Nothing Less," ELW 597
1. My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
no merit of my own I claim,
but wholly lean on Jesus' name.
Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
all other ground is sinking sand.
2. When darkness veils his lovely face,
I rest on his unchanging grace;
in ev'ry high and stormy gale
my anchor holds within the veil.
Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
all other ground is sinking sand.
3. His oath, his covenant, his blood
sustain me in the raging flood;
when all supports are washed away,
he then is all my hope and stay.
all other ground is sinking sand.
3. His oath, his covenant, his blood
sustain me in the raging flood;
when all supports are washed away,
he then is all my hope and stay.
Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
all other ground is sinking sand.
4. When he shall come with trumpet sound,
oh, may I then in him be found,
clothed in his righteousness alone,
redeemed to stand before the throne!

"My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness." With these words we are confessing with St. Peter in this week's gospel our hope in the anointed one of God, Jesus of Nazareth. This confession of faith stands against the darkness and the threats of sin and death. This confession lifts up the name of Jesus, his cross and resurrection against all the forces of sin and death--even the very gates of hell. We are boasting not about ourselves but our boasting rests wholly on Christ alone, the righteous one of God. The cornerstone of our hope--our everything--is Jesus, his blood and righteousness. His righteousness is that he has come to save. His blessing is his everlasting grace and mercy. So when he comes with a shout, with the sound of a trumpet, we know with confidence that we belong to him, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Open to us the gates of righteousness, O Lord, and we will enter. We know you are our hope now, and in time to come, forever and ever. Amen.

Matthew 16:13 When Yeshua came into the territory around Caesarea Philippi, he asked his talmidim, “Who are people saying the Son of Man is?” 14 They said, “Well, some say Yochanan the Immerser, others Eliyahu, still others Yirmeyahu or one of the prophets.” 15 “But you,” he said to them, “who do you say I am?” 16 Shim‘on Kefa answered, “You are the Mashiach, the Son of the living God.” 17 “Shim‘on Bar-Yochanan,” Yeshua said to him, “how blessed you are! For no human being revealed this to you, no, it was my Father in heaven. 18 I also tell you this: you are Kefa,” [which means ‘Rock,’] “and on this rock I will build my Community, and the gates of Sh’ol will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” 20 Then he warned the talmidim not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.(Complete Jewish Bible)

"You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God." He might not have known it at the moment, but by his inspired confession and Jesus' declaration, Simon Peter--"The Rock"--is putting in his lot with whole kingdoms of people--the children of Israel, sinners and outsiders, women and children, the sick and alone and even all those suspect Gentiles. These are the ones to whom Jesus came to bring light, life and healing. These are the ones Jesus will make into the assembly of believers we call "church." When Jesus calls Simon Peter "the Rock" he is putting him in the same gathering with all of these redeemed people. By the work of the Holy Spirit that gathering continues to grow. And nothing--not even the powers of sin and death--can prevail against it.
Eternal God, by your servant Peter ,you built your church. Give us confidence that nothing can prevail against it, even as we make disciples in your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Matthew 16:13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"
14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
17 And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven.
18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
20 Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. (New Revised Standard Version)
