Redondo Beach First United Methodist Church eNews for Thursday,  21 June 2018: "Pass the Mic--Youth Speakers in Worship" "Pass the Mic: Youth Speakers in Worship! Worship at 8:30am and 10:30am."
From Pastor Molly: no borders
In the midst of national controversy about how we treat undocumented immigrants at our border, I'm reminded that the body of Christ knows no national boundaries.
Our Christian values motivate our youth to organize a trip to the San Quintin Valley in Baja, Mexico to work with migrant farmworkers, and it motivates compassion for immigrants seeking refuge in our own country. Jesus commands us to love our neighbors, and even our enemies.
Whatever our politics, the message of the gospel cuts across party lines and pushes us way past our comfort zones, demanding that we see others as precious and valuable, created in the very image of God. It requires us to give special attention to those who are vulnerable, including children. We might find it impractical to do so, but the gospel requires we treat one another with dignity.
I certainly believe this has implications for how we police our national borders and matters for how we police our cities. It matters for how we treat our political opponents, too.
I confess that I need to be reminded of that, in this strange time when it's far too easy to listen only to news that reinforces what we already believe. I am grateful that the church is one place where we gather together across diversities of political belief, race, class, and age, seeking not only to tolerate one another, but to see Christ more clearly through each other. May it be so.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
I am away on vacation from Thursday the 21st through Friday the 29th; I will miss being with you in worship, but am so grateful for a whole team of folks who are helping lead while I'm away! In addition to our fabulous staff, I am grateful to Kim Edwards, who will be leading the Thursday Pastor's Bible Study for two weeks in my absence. And on Sunday, I'm grateful for the youth who will preach, as well as two clergy colleagues who will preside at the communion table: Rev. Alex Palomaria, a United Methodist pastor from Alabama who is stationed here as a chaplain in the Air Force will be with us during 8:30 worship on Sunday. Rev. Mark Ulrickson, a retired United Methodist Elder in our Conference will be with us during 10:30 worship. I hope you'll help welcome and thank these friends who are giving of themselves.
In Worship This Week
Sunday, June 24:
Youth Speakers--Graduating Seniors:
Todd Potter, Adam Yorke, Joshua Kosnoff

2 Corinthians 6:1-132 Corinthians 6:1 As God’s fellow-workers we also urge you not to receive his grace and then do nothing with it. 2 For he says,
“At the acceptable time I heard you;
in the day of salvation I helped you.”[
2 Corinthians 6:2 Isaiah 49:8]
3 We try not to put obstacles in anyone’s path, so that no one can find fault with the work we do. 4 On the contrary, we try to commend ourselves in every way as workers for God by continually enduring troubles, hardships, calamities, 5 beatings, imprisonments, riots, overwork, lack of sleep and food. 6 We commend ourselves by our purity, knowledge, patience and kindness; by the Ruach HaKodesh; by genuineness of love 7 and truthfulness of speech; and by God’s power. We commend ourselves through our use of righteous weapons, whether for pressing our cause or defending it; 8 through being honored and dishonored, praised and blamed, considered deceptive and sincere, 9 unknown and famous. And we commend ourselves as God’s workers headed for death, yet look! we’re alive! as punished, yet not killed; 10 as having reason to be sad, yet always filled with joy; as poor, yet making many people rich; as having nothing, yet having everything!
11 Dear friends in Corinth! We have spoken frankly to you, we have opened our hearts wide. 12 Any constraint you feel has not been imposed by us, but by your own inner selves. 13 So, just to be “fair” (I am using the language of children), open wide your hearts too.
 (Complete Jewish Bible).
2 Corinthians 6:1-13
Verses:
6:1 We then not only beseech, but as fellow - labourers with you, who are working out your own salvation, do also exhort you, not to receive the grace of God - Which we have been now describing. In vain - We receive it by faith; and not in vain, if we add to this, persevering holiness.
6:2 For he saith - The sense is, As of old there was a particular time wherein God was pleased to pour out his peculiar blessing, so there is now. And this is the particular time: this is a time of peculiar blessing. 49:8 .
6:3 Giving, as far as in us lies, no offence, that the ministry be not blamed on our account.
6:4 But approving ourselves as the ministers of God - Such as his ministers ought to be. In much patience - Shown,
In afflictions, necessities, distresses - All which aregeneral terms.
In stripes, imprisonments, tumults - Which are particularsorts of affliction, necessity, distress
In labours, watchings, fastings - Voluntarily endured.Allthese are expressed in the plural number, to denote a variety of them. In afflictions, several ways to escape may appear, though none without difficulty in necessities, one only, and that a difficult one; in distresses, none at all appears.
6:5 In tumults - The Greek word implies such attacks as a man cannot stand against, but which bear him hither and thither by violence.
6:6 By prudence - Spiritual divine; not what the world terms so. Worldly prudence is the practical use of worldly wisdom: divine prudence is the due exercise of grace, making spiritual understanding go as far as possible. By love unfeigned - The chief fruit of the Spirit.
6:7 By the convincing and converting power of God - Accompanying his word; and also attesting it by diversmiracles. By the armour of righteousness on the right hand and the left - That is, on all sides; the panoply or whole armour of God.
6:8 By honour and dishonour - When we are present.By evil report and good report - When we are absent.Who could bear honour and good report, were it not balanced by dishonour? As deceivers - Artful, designing men. So the world represents all true ministers of Christ. Yet true - Upright, sincere, in the sight of God.
6:9 As unknown - For the world knoweth us not, as it knew him not. Yet well known - To God, and to those who are the seals of our ministry. As dying, yet behold - Suddenly, unexpectedly, God interposes, and we live.
6:10 As sorrowing - For our own manifold imperfections, and for the sins and sufferings of our brethren. Yet always rejoicing - In present peace, love, power, and a sure hope of future glory. As having nothing, yet possessing all things - For all things are ours, if we are Christ's. What amagnificence of thought is this!
6:11 From the praise of the Christian ministry, which he began 2:14 , he now draws his affectionate exhortation.O ye Corinthians - He seldom uses this appellation. But it has here a peculiar force. Our mouth is opened toward you - With uncommon freedom, because our heart is enlarged - In tenderness.
6:12 Ye are not straitened in us - Our heart is wide enough to receive you all. But ye are straitened in your own bowels - Your hearts are shut up, and so not capable of the blessingsye might enjoy.
6:13 Now for a recompence of the same - Of my parental tenderness. I speak as to my children - I ask nothing hard or grievous. Be ye also enlarged - Open your hearts, first to God, and then to us, so 8:5 , that God may "dwell in you," 6:16 ; 7:1; and that ye may "receive us," 7:2 .
 (John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes).

Special Music: "Victory Chant" and "Swingin' with the Saints" sung by the Chancel Choir.

"Victory Chant" by Joseph William Vogels
Hail Jesus! You're my King!
Your life frees me to sing
I will praise You all of my days
You're perfect in all Your ways
Hail Jesus! You're my Lord!
I will obey Your word
Because I want to see Your kingdom come
Not my will but Yours be done
Glory, glory to the Lamb!
You will take us into the land
We will conquer in Your name
And proclaim that "Jesus reigns!"
Hail, hail! Lion of Judah!
How wonderful You are!
Hail, hail! Lion of Judah!
How powerful You are!
He's the Lion in the Tribe of Judah
He's the Root and the Offspring of David
He's the Lily of the Valley
He's the Bright and Morning Star
The Lion of Judah shall break every chain and give to us the victory again and again
"Swingin' with the Saints" by Mark Hayes
Swing low, sweet chariot,
comin' for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet, sweet, old chariot,
comin' for to carry me right on home.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
that's a-comin' to carry, carry me home.
I'm a tellin' you,
swing down low,
and just tell me you're comin'.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
comin' for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet, sweet, old chariot,
comin' for to carry me right on home.
Swing down low, swing down low,
It's a-comin', it's a-comin' to carry me home.
Swing down low, oh, so low,
Yes, it's comin' to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet, sweet chariot,
comin' for to carry me home.
Swing low,
comin' for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
comin' for to carry me home.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
comin' for to carry me home.
If you get there before I do,
comin' for to carry me home,
tell all my friends
I'm comin' right after you,
comin' for to carry me home.
Oh, when the saints go marchin' in,
Oh, when the saints go marchin' in,
Oh, Lord, I want to be in that number,
when the saints go marchin' in.
If you get there be- before I do,
comin' for to carry me home,
tell all my friends
I'm comin' right after you,
comin' for to carry me home.
I see a chariot,
I know it's coming,
I see a chariot,
and it's coming for me.
The saints in glory,
they'll all go marchin'
all over heaven for eternity!
Oh, when the saints go marchin' in,
Oh, when the saints go marchin' in,
Oh, Lord, I want to be in that number,
when the saints go marchin' in.
How I want to be in that number
when the saints go marchin' in.
News From Our Members
I was reading my monthly magazine, The Rotarian, the official magazine of Rotary International, and I was intrigued by the long headline, “It's Important for Scientists to Meet with People who think Differently” and I couldn't help but translate it into “It's important for Christians ( and we church people) to meet people who think differently.” Indeed, as we get to know one another better, we learn that we, ourselves, often think about Christianity in different ways than those who may be sitting alongside us in the church pews. How wonderful it is to be worshiping with others and sharing beliefs, often different from each other. Yet, we all know the unifying Love of Jesus that unites us as United Methodists for once and for all...

Indeed, as we get to know one another better, we learn that we, ourselves, often think about Christianity in different ways than those who may be sitting alongside us in the church pews. Yet, we all know the unifying Love of Jesus that unites us as United Methodists for once and for all.
Last Sunday we heard a great sermon from Pastor Molly titled "New Point of View" and also the two young adults Will and Grace Martens as they told of their lifelong growth in our church, thanking all and leaving this fall for University study in Arizona and Pennsylvania respectively. Pull it up on your computer if you missed it.
It was also great to hear that, yes, Pastor Molly Vetter will continue to be our assigned Senior Pastor for another full year. She said that in a brief report on her experiences at Redlands for our denomination's Annual Conference.
Perhaps you have noticed our regular usher for church, Jim Howard. He has taken his turn at ushering for many years, even now that he and his wife have switched to another church. Jim still returns to finish his assignment for June,as he calls it, for he agreed to complete the year as usher. We thank Jim for doing his best to help our church run well and do his part as an usher.

Options for Children at Church in Summer!
We love having children in worship, and through the summer, we encourage families to attend together!
For much of the summer, our children's Sunday School is on break, but two special things are happening:
-We have special children's activity books available to pick up as kids enter the sanctuary, with things they can work on during worship.
-Some weeks, we also have special Summer FunDay School activities planned: the kids will be invited to meet up at the Passing of the Peace to leave the sanctuary and go for a lesson during part of worship--they'll return for Communion.
Children are invited to Summer FunDay School this week! Begin in the sanctuary with your families--we'll go for our activity after prayer time!

Personally, I want to express my gratitude to the loyal choir members who have contributed so much to our worship, both this last year, and over the years. This Sunday marks the last Sunday for the choir until the fall. Personally, I want to express my gratitude to the loyal choir members who have contributed so much to our worship, both this last year, and over the years. They have made our services rich and inspiring, and we owe them a great debt of gratitude for their commitment and time. I would urge all the members of the congregation to approach them this week, before or after the service, and let them know how much they mean to you.
The recent composer Sunday was a rousing success, featuring the beautiful music of Sean McDermott. He was simply overflowing with praise for our choir, our musicians and our church family. He sent us a note telling us that we inspired him to go back to work and finish some of the unfinished music in his computer and start some more. The next Composer Sunday will be in the early fall. Stay tuned.
During the summer, we will be serenaded by a steady stream of wonderful singers, starting with our own Pauline Tamale, who will be with us on the July 1st. Be there or be square.
Mark Miller received his Bachelor of Arts in Music from Yale University and his Master of Music in Organ Performance from Juilliard. He currently serves on the faculty at both the Drew Theological School and the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University where he teaches music and worship. He also is Director of the Gospel and Youth Choirs at the Marble Collegiate Church, in New York City. From 1999 to 2001 he was Music Associate and Assistant Organist of The Riverside Church in New York City. He is well known throughout the United Methodist Church as a worship leader, teacher and performer of sacred music. Abingdon Press has written that he is a "rising star in the field of Protestant music." Since 1997 Mark has performed concerts and directed conferences at churches both across the United States and internationally. His song I Believe, written in 2012, has become a favorite due to its simplicity and upbeat message.
Mark Hayes is a composer/arranger/pianist based in Kansas City whose music is renowned around the world. He got his degree in piano performance at Baylor University, moved to Kansas City to work as a music editor for Tempo Publishing, and now spends his time writing music for the church and traveling around the world as a clinician and guest conductor. When I met Mark in the late 80's, I was struck by his pianistic skills – more specifically, the way he manhandled the piano into submission to produce the most wondrous sounds. Mark's writing is superbly crafted, with influences of black gospel and jazz. He's one of my favorite contemporary writers, and when I arrived at FUMCRB, outgoing choir director Linda told me "You'll like it here – we have a lot of Mark Hayes in the library." If you play piano and want some music that will both challenge you and satisfy your appetite for delicious piano music, pick up a book of Mark Hayes piano improvisations. You'll love it. The anthem for this week – Swingin' With The Saints – is one we've done before. It was written in 1981 and combines two old favorite hymns – Swing Low, Sweet Chariotand When The Saints Go Marching In – and makes them groovy.
The band Hillsong United was formed in 1998 from close friends within the Hillsong youth ministry (called "Powerhouse Youth"). So many songs were being written within the youth ministry that it was suggested they make an album. The songs One and Everyday were recorded and released with the annual Hillsong worship album in 1999. They both achieved gold sales status in Australia, and the band has gone on to win five Dove Awards in 2014 and were nominated for an American Music Award and won the Billboard Music Award Top Christian Artist in 2015. Their song Oceans was released in 2013 and was certified Platinum – 1,000,000 copies sold. Their song Wonder is the title song from the album of the same name which was released in 2017. The album was released in June, and the single, Wonder, was released in May, along with the music video. The album charted at #21 on Billboard 200 and at #1 on Billboard Christian Albums.
