Guatemala district donates 5 tons of food to volcano victims
Local Nazarene churches on Guatemala's North Verapaz District donated more than five tons of food following food shortages in Escuintla, one of the communities affected by the volcanic eruption earlier this month.

Nazarene churches on Guatemala's North Verapaz District are responding to the food shortages in Escuintla — one of the communities affected by the volcanic eruption earlier this month — by donating more than five tons of food to the community in only one week.
Nazarene Compassionate Ministries leaders, the District Advisory Board, and local pastors organized a trip to deliver the food to the El Zapote community 13 June. Though the team could not fully reach El Zapote due to road damage from the volcano, community members were still able to receive the food by walking about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) to the delivery truck.
"Thanks to all the people who made an effort to reach this place to support us," said Luis Mijangos, a local resident. "Here the help is needed. Thanks to the [brothers and sisters] for helping us."
North Verapaz District Superintendent Francisco Cho shared his gratitude for the generosity.
"With this action, the church begins to demonstrate a testimony of compassion, remembering that the teaching of holiness is not only individual and moral but also social," Cho said. "God bless each church for its offering to this community of El Zapote." (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica)

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit the city of Osaka, Japan, 18 June, killing four people and injuring hundreds more.
More than 100,000 homes were left without gas and water while around 170,000 were left without power. In addition, people were trapped in elevators, traffic came to a halt for the majority of the day, and several roads were damaged when water pipes broke.
Airports in the area were closed for several hours and train lines were interrupted. Many commuters chose to stay in nearby shelters for the night while others walked home instead of waiting for public transportation to resume.
Tremors from the earthquake also affected the Japanese areas of Kyoto, Nara, Hyogo, and Shiga.
Local officials warn that Japan could experience another high magnitude earthquake in the coming days.
Prayer is requested for the victims, their families, and for the Church of the Nazarene in Japan as churches respond to the needs of their country. (Church of the Nazarene Asia-Pacific

Mexico church members help meet medical need
Three Mexico church members recently received their medical certification and can now join the Nazarene Medical Brigade, a group that specializes in providing medical support to others in the area who can't afford to see a medical doctor.

Three Nazarenes from the Eternal Father Church of the Nazarene on Mexico's Western District participated in a professional medical certification training this month.
The members can now join the Nazarene Medical Brigade, a group that specializes in providing medical support to others in the area who can't afford to see a medical doctor.
Without these trained individuals, there would be little help for those who suffer medical emergencies in the area.
"We are happy to know that there are more and more young volunteers receiving training in areas that will enable us to deliver a timely, holistic response to emergencies," said Cutberto Tenorio, Mexico North Area Nazarene Compassionate Ministries coordinator.
The training took place in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, and was led by the Mexican federal police force, Gendarmería Nacional, and the local emergency management agency, Coordinación de Protección Civil. (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica

Flags of the Nations: Suriname
Each week, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center proudly flies a flag of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. This week's flag: Suriname, Mesoamerica Region. Click "read more" for information on the country, including what year the denomination entered Suriname and how many Nazarenes are there today.
The Suriname flag's main colors — green, white, and red — represent fertility, justice/freedom, and renewal, respectively. The gold star symbolizes unity, referencing the previous flag with a star for each ethnic group.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Suriname
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Suriname in 1984.
Suriname had a population of 591,919 in 2017. That same year, Suriname reported 10 Churches of the Nazarene, six of which had been officially organized. Suriname has 2,120 total members.
Located on the Mesoamerica Region, Suriname is a Phase 1 district. For more information about the Mesoamerica Region, visit mesoamericaregion.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.

MVNU appoints vice president for University Relations
Mount Vernon Nazarene University President Henry W. Spaulding II announced the appointment of James Smith to the position of vice president for University Relations as of 1 June.

Mount Vernon Nazarene University President Henry W. Spaulding II announced the appointment of James Smith to the position of vice president for University Relations as of 1 June.
“Rev. James Smith has worked very effectively for 10 years in enrollment helping the university stabilize and strengthen enrollment," Spaulding said. "Smith will bring the same vision and passion to his work in University Relations. He has rich connections with alumni, which will enhance his capacity to build stronger financial support for the work of MVNU."
Smith has a deep history with MVNU and the Church of the Nazarene's USA/Canada Region. His family has been involved with MVNC/MVNU since its founding in 1968. His parents, Jim (’72, ’85) and Terri (Clouse ’85) Smith, are both alumni who returned with two young children in tow to finish their bachelor’s degrees when MVNU became a four-year institution. During those years, James spent countless hours on campus after school and on breaks — attending classes alongside his parents, going to chapel in the old multi-purpose building, tending to their campus garden, and reading in the library. He fell in love with MVNU and always knew he wanted to return for his own education.
After graduating with a bachelor of arts degree from Mount Vernon Nazarene College in 1999, James and his wife, Kelly (’99), served in various ministry roles at Nazarene churches in Marietta, Sidney, Findlay, and Bowling Green, Ohio.
James returned to campus in 2008 as the director of Undergraduate Admissions and Student Recruitment (2008-2013). Since that time he also served as assistant vice president of Enrollment Management (2013-2015), associate vice president of Enrollment Management (2015-2017), and vice president of Enrollment Management and Marketing (2017-2018).
“It has been an honor and privilege to contribute to the life of MVNU over the past 10 years," James said. "I have a deep love for our campuses and the people in them, but I also love the campus community that expands beyond these locations. I realize that the name MVNU does not just represent the physical campuses; it represents a people.
“The opportunity to invest more deeply in the lives and stories of those people, both on our campuses and around the world, brings me great joy and excitement. The work of university relations, alumni, and fundraising are never finished, and I know we have a community of alumni and friends who are committed to our mission and will help us achieve anything the Lord puts before us. As we enter into the year of our 50th anniversary celebration, I am ready to help us dream, plan, and find the resources we will need for our next 50 years!”
Outside of his work at MVNU, Smith is recognized for his expertise in enrollment management. He has served terms as the chairperson of the State of Ohio ACT Council, Ohio Private College Admissions Directors, and Nazarene Enrollment Officers Network. He has also served on the Ohio College Credit Plus Advisory Committee, the executive board of the Ohio Association for College Admissions Counseling, the executive board of the State of Ohio ACT Council, and the Ohio ACT Research Council.
Smith graduated from MVNU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in religion and youth ministry and has a Master of Arts degree in educational ministry from Huntington University. James and Kelly have four children, Halle (12), Judah (9), Phineas (8), and Asher (6). (Mount Vernon Nazarene University

Stewardship Development announces scholarship winners
The office of Stewardship Develpment announced the 2017-2018 winners of the Stewardship Sermon Scholarship: Janae Meyer, attending Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri; and Nicholas Walker, attending Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho.

The Church of the Nazarene's office of Stewardship Development announced the 2017-2018 winners of the Stewardship Sermon Scholarship. The award is given to those students whose sermons are judged most effective in exploring biblical stewardship in the contemporary context of the local Nazarene church.
This year, two winners were chosen for submitting excellent stewardship sermons: Janae Meyer, attending Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, and Nicholas Walker, attending Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. Each will receive a $1,000 scholarship toward their continued pastoral development.
This year’s scripture assignment was Philippians 4:10-20. Applicants for the scholarship were challenged to explore a Wesleyan-Holiness perspective on tithing and sacrificial giving while addressing money as it relates to funding the mission of the Church of the Nazarene, “To make Christlike disciples in the nations.”
The sermons submitted by Meyer and Walker offered insightful, challenging calls to biblical stewardship. Stewardship Ministries would like to congratulate both winners on their excellent work. Their sermons are available as a free resource download on the Stewardship website. (Stewardship Development)
Philippians 4:10 In union with the Lord I greatly rejoice that now, after this long time, you have let your concern for me express itself again. Of course, you were concerned for me all along, but you had no opportunity to express it. 11 Not that I am saying this to call attention to any need of mine; since, as far as I am concerned, I have learned to be content regardless of circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in want, and I know what it is to have more than enough — in everything and in every way I have learned the secret of being full and being hungry, of having abundance and being in need. 13 I can do all things through him who gives me power.
14 Nevertheless, it was good of you to share in my trouble. 15 And you Philippians yourselves know that in the early days of my work spreading the Good News, when I left Macedonia, not a single congregation shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving — only you. 16 Indeed, in Thessalonica when I needed it, you sent me aid twice. 17 I am not seeking the gift; rather, I am looking for what will increase the credit balance of your account. 18 I have been more than paid in full: I have been filled, since I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent — they are a fragrant aroma,[
Philippians 4:18 Genesis 8:21; Exodus 29:18] an acceptable sacrifice, one that pleases God well. 19 Moreover, my God will fill every need of yours according to his glorious wealth, in union with the Messiah Yeshua. 20 And to God our Father be the glory forever and ever. Amen. (Complete Jewish Bible). Read more
