Redondo Beach, California, United States First United Methodist Church enews for Thursday, 16 August 2018: "Jesus Loves the Earth, VBS Sunday!" Celebrating VBS this Sunday! "Jesus Loves the Earth" series continues.
From Pastor Molly: TransformingI've been having fun at our Vacation Bible School this year. Our Renew theme for this year is near and dear to my heart, and I treasure getting a chance to connect our love of God and our care for the earth.
Even better, VBS gives me a chance to help create things with kids. And all week, we've been re-using things, using discarded stuff (and a lot of masking tape) to create new things. It's a blast to watch kids be excited about playing with the unusual shapes and materials--every day, they've jumped right in, excited to build and create.
It's such a privilege to get to provide time and space and a safe, caring community in which young people get to do all these things. I would wish that all young people would know that the church is one place where they are welcome, and where they are encouraged to create and play and learn and make.
All week, we have been talking about Jesus' parable about a sower who planted seeds. Though so much went wrong with seeds that were planted--it was eaten by birds, burned by the sun, choked by thorns--some of it also fell on good soil. There, it grew and flourished. While the church cannot protect us all from hard times, I give thanks that we get to be, as often as possible, good soil, in which life can flourish.
with gratitude,
Pastor Molly
I hope you'll join us in worship this Sunday! During our 10:30 service, we will hear some about VBS, and sing together one of our songs for the week. I know it will be special time!
Sunday, August 19: VBS Sunday
"Jesus Loves the Earth: Tend the Soil"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Mark 4:1-9
Mark 4:1 Again Yeshua began to teach by the lake, but the crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat on the lake and sat there, while the crowd remained on shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things in parables. In the course of his teaching, he said to them: 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he sowed, some seed fell alongside the path; and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Other seed fell on rocky patches where there was not much soil. It sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow; 6 but when the sun rose, the young plants were scorched; and since their roots were not deep, they dried up. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked it; so that it yielded no grain. 8 But other seed fell into rich soil and produced grain; it sprouted, and grew, and yielded a crop — thirty, sixty, even a hundred times what was sown.” 9 And he concluded, “Whoever has ears to hear with, let him hear!” (Complete Jewish Bible).
Mark 4:1-9
Verse 2
[2] And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,
He taught them many things by parables — After the usual manner of the eastern nations, to make his instructions more agreeable to them, and to impress them the more upon attentive hearers. A parable signifies not only a simile or comparison, and sometimes a proverb, but any kind of instructive speech, wherein spiritual things are explained and illustrated by natural, Proverbs 1:6.
To understand a proverb and the interpretation — The proverb is the literal sense, the interpretation is the spiritual resting in the literal sense killeth, but the spiritual giveth life.
Verse 3
[3] Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:
Hearken — This word he probably spoke with a loud voice, to stop the noise and hurry of the people. (John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes)

Special Music: “I’d Give My Life For You” from Miss Saigon and "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar, sung by Denice Golzales
“I’d Give My Life For You” by Alain Albert Boublil / Claude Michel Schonberg / Richard E. Maltby
You who I cradled in my arms.
You,
Asking as little as you can.
Little snip of a little man,
I know I'd give my life for you.
You didn't ask me to be born
You,
Why should you learn of war or pain?
To be sure you're not hurt again,
I swear I'd give my life for you.
I've tasted love beyond all fear.
And you should know it's love that brought you here.
And in one perfect night,
When the stars burned like new,
I knew what I must do.
I'll give you a million things I'll never own.
I'll give you a world to conquer when you're grown.
You will be who you want to be.
You
Can choose whatever heaven grants.
As long as you can have your chance,
I swear I'll give my life for you.
Sometimes I wake up, reaching for him.
I feel his shadow brush my head,
But there's just moonlight on my bed.
Was he a ghost?
Was he a lie?
That made my body laugh and cry?
Then by my side the proof I see, his little one.
Gods of the sun,
Bring him to me.
You will be who you want to be.
You
Can choose whatever heaven grants.
As long as you can have your chance,
I swear I'll give my life for you.
No one can stop what I must do.
I swear I'll give my life for you.
"I Don't Know How to Love Him" by Andrew Lloyd Webber / Tim Rice
Don't know how to love him, what to do, how to move him
I've been changed, yes really changed
In these past few days when I see myself, I seem like someone else
I don't know how to take this, I don't see why he moves me
He's a man, he's just a man
And I've had so many men before in very many ways, he's just one more
Should I bring him down, should I scream and shout
Should I speak of love, let my feelings out
I never thought I'd come to this, what's it all about
Don't you think it's rather funny that I should be in this position
I'm the one who's always been so calm, so cool, no lover's fool
Running every show, he scares me so
Should I bring him down, should I scream and shout
Should I speak of love, let my feelings out
I never thought I'd come to this, what's it all about
Yet, if he said he loved me, I'd be lost, I'd be frightened
I couldn't cope, just couldn't cope
I'd turn my head, I'd back away, I wouldn't want to know
He scares me so, I want him so, I love him so

Guess what? I missed church last Sunday because I was attending a family wedding in Fallbrook, California which is in Northern San Diego County. It was at a country club with a garden chapel that is very beautiful and the weather there last Sunday was not too hot. The Preacher officiating may have been Baptist, but took liberties with the Gospel as he performed a nice service for the senior couple. My son Steve drove us there and we enjoyed the day, spent the night and returned Monday by about 2 PM. Now, why write about this? Bob Peterson's popular column for the Mainsail has found new life, online! Read his view from the pews about church life and community news. You'll enjoy keeping up with the many good things happening in our congregation! by Bob PetersonGuess what? I missed church last Sunday because I was attending a family wedding in Fallbrook, California which is in Northern San Diego County. It was at a country club with a garden chapel that is very beautiful and the weather there last Sunday was not too hot. The Preacher officiating may have been Baptist, but took liberties with the Gospel as he performed a nice service for the senior couple. My son Steve drove us there and we enjoyed the day, spent the night and returned Monday by about 2 PM. Now, why write about this? I haven't been in that part of California for maybe thirty or more years and was amazed at the building of homes and business in that hilly desert area. It so much developed that one wonders how it is governed. They certainly have a lot of traffic, but then so does all of California.
All my life and my wife's life, weddings were always done in the church, where they should be solemnized and at this age I missed that warm feeling of church friends and family being there. Well, I guess I'm just growing too old for some of the changes in lifestyles. Meanwhile I'll look forward to seeing you all this Sunday at Our Church.
Remember that this has been the week of Vacation Bible School, so we just may have a great lot of children in worship this Sunday. Also, if you are a man, please join us for the Monday morning 7:00AM Breakfast at Coco's restaurant, Hawthorne Blvd. & 182nd Street, Torrance CA. Two weeks ago we had Gene Koester as a visitor and it added a lot to our group.

Coming at Church
His teaching is full of stories and metaphors that draw lessons from the natural world. He spoke of farmers and fishermen, of mother hens and fig trees, inviting us to think deeply about the world around us.
We believe that Jesus' teachings have a lot to say to us as we try to navigate our ecological responsibilities today.
Join Pastor Molly for sermon series, through September 2.

David Wallace Crowder, who goes by the mononymous stage name Crowder (in the finest tradition of Cher, Madonna, Adele and Prince), was the lead singer in the now defunct David Crowder Band, a contemporary worship band that disbanded in 2012. He has since gone on to a solo career, releasing his first solo studio album in 2014, under the sixsteps/sparrow label, called Neon Steeple. I Am A Seed was released in 2012, when he still fronted the David Crowder Band, as part of the album Give Us Rest. It’s a straight ahead country hoedown footstomper that the kids are singing this week in VBS, being led by Kevin Hwang.
Jesus Christ Superstar began as a concept album in the late 1960’s, with Webber working with his school friend Tim Rice. They began recording the music piecemeal, and released I Don’t Know How To Love Him as a single in 1970, which peaked at #28 in the U.S in 1971. The lead role of Jesus was sung by Ian Gillan, who had just joined the English rock band Deep Purple and brought with him a degree of fame and following to the project. Mary Magdalene was sung by Yvonne Elliman, who was born in Honolulu (Irish father, Japanese mother) and was singing in London clubs at the time she was discovered by Webber and Rice. She and Barry Dennen (Pilate) were the only cast members to do the original concept album of 1970, the first authorized stage performance at the Pittsburgh Civic Auditorium in July of 1971, the original Broadway production, which opened in October of 1971, and the movie, which was released in 1973 (starring Ted Neeley as Jesus, who was the Jesus understudy for the original Broadway production). I Don’t Know How To Love Him was originally written in 1967 with different lyrics and called Kansas Morning (people in the know commented on how similar the melody sounded to a theme from Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor). The lyrics were re-written, and the piece re-named, in January of 1970 to give the character of Mary Magdalene a primary solo song. When presented with the song, Yvonne Elliman was puzzled by the romantic nature of the lyrics, because she thought that the Mary she’d been recruited to play was Jesus’ mother. The song is one of those rare songs to have 2 versions reach the top 40 of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart at the same time - Elliman’s at #28 and Helen Reddy’s cover at #13. Recorded in 1 take in June of 1970 at Olympic Studios in London, it has been universally acclaimed as the high point in the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack since the album's September 1970 release. In 2003, The Rough Guide to Cult Popwould assess Elliman's performance: "It's rare to hear a singer combine such power and purity of tone in one song, and none of the famous singers who have covered this ballad since have come close." I discovered when I arrived at FUMCRB that Superstar was a favorite of Pastor Molly, and I’ve been looking for ways to integrate more of the songs into the service. When I found out that Denice was working on it, it seemed to be the obvious choice.
I’d Give My Life For You is a dramatic power ballad from the musical Miss Saigon, which was written by the same creative team that wrote Les Misérables. The song is sung by Kim, singing a statement of devotion to her son Tam, and is the closing song to Act 1. Just as the show Rent is based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Boheme, Miss Saigon is based on his opera Madame Butterfly, and tells the tragic tale of a doomed romance involving an Asian woman abandoned by her American soldier lover during the Vietnam War. The show debuted in London in September of 1989 and closed 10 years later after 4092 performances. It opened on Broadway in April 1991, and as of last year, remains Broadway’s 13th longest running show.

Jim Raycroft
Music Director, Jim Raycroft, will share upcoming worship music
selections and a little bit of history, too. by Jim Raycroft
This week we are blessed by a return of our talented young friend Denise Gonzales. Denise Alyssa Gonzales has graduated Royal High School and is relocating to San Diego in about a week to attend UCSD in pursuit of a degree in dentistry. She was a straight "A" student and an International Baccalaureate candidate. A former competitive swimmer, Denise loves to stay active in the pool as well as in music. She has earned various awards from singing competitions, including first place in the 2014 First Annual Royal High School Talent Show. Denise has also sung with the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra, has been featured as a front act for many popular Filipino musicians at live concerts, and sings at karaoke bars. She enjoys singing and performing for the Lord and touching people's hearts with every song's message. Regardless of where she is living, she will always be a part of the FUMCRB family, and we’ll look forward to having her sing for us as often as her schedule allows.
