Trinity United Methodist Church in Gainsville, Florida - Daily Scripture - Monday, 24 February 2014 - Devotion "On Parenting (from I Samuel)"
"So now I give him (baby Samuel) to The Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to The Lord." (I Samuel 1: 28)
These are the words of Samuel's mother, Hannah. She speaks them over her young son, Samuel, and in a far greater sense she speaks them for every parent. For, as parents we do not "own" our children; rather we are stewards of their lives; they are entrusted into our care by God to love, nurture, and guide them so that they can one day live fully unto God and repeat the process for their children.
Children, like all of life, are gifts, albeit more precious gifts than any other we can imagine. But they are gifts. We do well to remember that they are not "ours." They belong to God. That reality does not diminish our love and sacrificing for them; rather it enlivens it and strengthens it.
It also reminds us that "we are not our own," but as we belong to Jesus, we belong to God. And that puts life into a whole new and wonderful perspective.
Love and prayers, Dan
