Gainesville, Florida, United States - Trinity United Methodist Church - Daily Scriptures - Devotion for Monday, 10 March 2014 "TAKE HEART"
SCRIPTURE: I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.--JOHN 16:33
I have struggled with recurring, consuming, debilitating depression for more than half my life. It started when I was eleven; I am now twenty-four. Years of juggling therapists, medications, and alternative therapies have offered some reprieve. But despite my best efforts, I still spend more time in darkness than light.
Sometimes God feels very close to me. Other times, He feels impossibly distant. At my worst, I cannot hear Him at all. This is not His fault by any means - God does not retreat when I am ill, I do. When I am staring up at the world from the bottom of a vast, ancient ocean of sadness, my heart has no room for Him. It barely has room for me.
Enter Jesus. In my worst moments, Jesus has repeatedly been the means by which the Divine is accessible to me when I am simply unable to acknowledge Him in His vast, infinite light - when the idea of God is too big and far beyond me to grasp.
When the Father feels like too much for my diminished understanding of goodness to seize hold of, the Son is there. He sits on the ocean floor with me and draws in the sand. He is as human as I am, and he understands, and can be understood. He is all of the light and goodness of the divine in a way that can reach my brokenness.
PRAYER: Father, I thank you for the multitude of ways in which you reach out to us when we are unable to reach out to you. In the world we have trouble; in you, the overcoming of it. May you continue to shine your light into our darkness.AMEN
