NTC-South Africa elects new principal
The Nazarene Theological College-South Africa board elected Cathy Lebese as the college's new principal, effective April 1. Lebese follows Mashangu Maluleka, who was appointed Africa South Field strategy coordinator in January.
At a farewell dinner for Maluleka, he reminded Lebese of the story of David, who tried on Saul's armor but found it didn't fit. God wanted David to be himself. He reminded Lebese to be herself; she is God's person for this time.
Lebese is the pastor of Africa Trinity Church of the Nazarene, which meets on the NTC-South Africa campus.
In addition, she currently serves as academic dean, a position she has held for the past six years. Prior to that, she served as registrar for two years.
In 2013, she completed a Master of Arts in biblical studies from Nazarene Theological College-Manchester. She also holds a Master of Arts in industrial sociology from the University of the Witwatersrand (2005).
Lebese also holds bachelor's degrees in journalism & media studies, industrial sociology & industrial psychology, English, Setswana & education, and theology & biblical studies from various universities in South
Africa and abroad.
She speaks English, Afrikaans, Setswana, Xitsonga, IsiXhosa, IsiZulu, Tshivenda, Sesotho, and Sepedi.
The announcement of her election was greeted with cheers at the end of the graduation ceremony on Saturday, March 15.
"I have not received a promotion, but an opportunity to serve," Lebese said. "I will always make myself available for Him to use as He chooses."--Church of the Nazarene Africa Region via Out of Africa

Myanmar District celebrates 30 years
The Church of the Nazarene's Myanmar District celebrated its 30th District Assembly March 15 through 17 in Kalaymyo, Myanmar, just a few miles from the India border.
Located on the Southeast Asia Field, Myanmar has only been open to the gospel since a civilian government was established after a 2010 general election.
The district owes its long history to the perseverance of a young new Christian.
In 1961, 17-year-old Robin was invited by a friend to listen to a Methodist evangelist speaking in Robin's home town. Accepting Christ as his Savior, Robin found a man who loaned him a Bible for just 10 days. In that time Robin, read from Genesis to Revelation and knew God was calling him to bring this message to Myanmar.
Robin's calling would take him to India, back to Myanmar, and on to Pasadena, California, to attended Fuller University. He later returned to Myanmar, where Robin Seia would work to establish the Church of the Nazarene in 1984.--Church of the Nazarene Asia-Pacific Region

Arkansas church celebrates mortgage burning 14 years after tornado
It's been a little more than 17 years since the Twin Rivers Church of the Nazarene was flattened in the 1997 tornado. It has taken the church that same amount of time to pay for the facility — valued now at about $1 million — they rebuilt in Caddo Valley in the months and years after the notorious storm.
On Sunday, they'll be burning their mortgage during what has been a long-awaited service.
The church, organized in 1938 in a Main Street, Arkadelphia, store front, built a church in 1940 at 7th and Crittenden. It remained there until the tornado wiped out the roof, windows and everything else but the sign, steps and walls. Even the Rev. M.L. Vail III's books were lost in the tornado. While the loss of the church was devastating, the loss of two young members was even more so. Reita Coffey and Abigail Brian, both 14 and members of the congregation, were two of the six whose lives were lost that day.
Like most who lived in Arkadelphia at the time, it was a weekend church members there will never forget. Vail's wife, Lorain, recalled the church had been preparing a special celebration for an elderly member.
Since the tornado wiped out the building, 87 members gathered in the church parsonage on Forrest Park Drive.
"We went ahead and had that celebration," Lorain said. "The district superintendent was also here with us.
Those are some days I don't think I'll ever forget."
The district superintendent helped the church plan on the next step of rebuilding. Two years before the tornado, the church had already purchased 9 acres in Caddo Valley, with plans to build there since the 7th and Crittenden street church was old with limited parking.
The church rebuilt at 129 Malvern Road in Caddo Valley and has been worshipping there since; now, there are about 50 active members.
Sunday's ceremony followed a morning worship service. Food and fellowship preceded the worship service.--Reprinted with permission from the Shiftings Herald

2013-2017 Manual now available
The 2013-2017 Manual of the Church of the Nazarene is now available online in English at nazarene.org and as a sales item in printed book form or CD-ROM from Nazarene Publishing House.
The Board of General Superintendents declared March 15, 2014, as the effective date for the 2013-2017 Manual of the Church of the Nazarene.
In June, the 2013 General Assembly commissioned a Manual Editing Committee to work on all resolutions which were adopted (or amended and adopted) by the Assembly. (Manual 902.4) Specific legislative language and updates (new or revised) are not deemed "official" until this committee's assignment is complete, which was late 2013. Legislation affecting the Manual is not applicable until the new Manual is declared effective by the Board of General Superintendents and is printed and released first in English. Subsequent translations follow as each language group completes those processes. (Manual 323)
A website (gar.nazarene.org) provided access to resolutions for General Assembly delegates and the general public prior to and during the 2013 General Assembly. This site is still available to anyone who wishes to access it, and no log-in is required to use it.
This site contains folders that include a file for each of the original resolutions in five languages (English, French, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish), that were submitted to the General Assembly. A Calendar of Resolutions was posted to this site on August 1, 2013, which identifies the specific action (adopted, amended and adopted, rejected, or referred) taken for each resolution by the 2013 General Assembly. To view the
calendar, scroll to the bottom of the homepage when the site opens and select the 2013 Calendar of Resolutions. The resolutions are organized into separate folders by committees according to each resolution code.

During the Africa South Field's recent district superintendents' retreat, Africa South Field Strategy Coordinator Mashangu Maluleka received an unusual request.
"During the first session I requested each one to introduce themselves and their ministries and any prayer request they had," Maluleka said.
Lesotho District Superintendent Lepeli Mpusi shared how the Lord was blessing his ministry. He said the area which is experiencing the fastest growth is the mountains of Mulati. He explained some of the pastors must walk six to eight hours before they reach transportation and requested prayer for this challenge.
Maluleka asked if there was anything the field could do to assist. Mpusi said the only mode of transport that could work in the mountains is a horse. He said if each of the five pastors received a horse, it would assist in fast-tracking the Great Commission. The horses cost approximately 3,500 South Africa rand (US$326) each.
"After prayer, I had people coming to me privately giving me some money towards assisting the five pastors in Lesotho; confirming what I was sensing in my spirit already," Maluleka said. "I then openly shared with the group and we agreed to raise money for five horses for Lesotho's mountain pastors. By the end of the retreat we had raised enough money for the horses!"
Mpusi flew to the mountains and sent pictures of the three horses that he was able to find and buy.--Church of the Nazarene Africa Region via Out of Africa

NCM Canada funds clean water, agriculture projects in MalawiNazarene Compassionate Ministries Canada partnered with the Chiyimba Church of the Nazarene in Malawi for several conservation agriculture projects. Local farmers will be taught conservation agriculture methods and seven test plots will be established in the seven villages, including Chiyimba.
Robert Hughes and Jodi Getson traveled to Chiyimba, where they met the pastor of the Chiyimba church and the NCM Malawi coordinator, Alex, to discuss and make plans for Phase 1 of this project.
The conservation agriculture methodology is designed to improve soil fertility, conserve moisture, and reduce high input costs. In many parts of Africa, these new farming methods were proven to significantly increase yields.
In December, NCM Canada sent CA$19,000 to Malawi as part of the partnership with the Chiyimba church.
Two new wells were funded and the roof of the church was also repaired using these funds. The wells will provide fresh, clean drinking water for two villages surrounding Chiyimba and the child development centers

Asia-Pacific Kudjip hydroelectric system set for April unveiling
Kudjip Nazarene Hospital struggled for years without a stable source of power. Power spikes, brownouts, and steady over-voltages wreaked havoc on the hospital equipment and patience of the medical teams, but the problem will soon be resolved.
The rebuilding and expansion of the hospital's 40-year-old hydroelectric system broke ground in June 2012.
Nearly two years later, completion is in sight with the official opening scheduled for April 30. Power is scheduled to start flowing from the turbine house in early June.
The project, which included a partnership with the Australian Agency for International Development, will have a completed cost of about US$4 million and is engineered to produce 256 volt-ampere of affordable, safe, reliable power.
"It will save the hospital literally hundreds of thousands of dollars on medical equipment [destroyed] from under and over voltages and power surges, as well as [provide savings in the area of] diesel and back-up generators," said Dr. Scott Dooley, hospital administrator.
The project was accomplished through the partnership of the many churches and individuals who gave seed money through multiple channels, including Nazarene Compassionate Ministries.
"It was truly the giving of all the people at the beginning that led to the funding of the project to a size we never anticipated," Dooley said. "Literally a 'loaves and fishes' moment for those of us who watched it unfold."--Church of the Nazarene Asia-Pacific Region

Asia-Pacific Region mourns loss of retired missionary Tillie McCroskey Tillie McCroskey, retired Nazarene missionary, passed away on March 17.
She was born in Goessel, Kansas, on May 22, 1926, the second of Alvin and Mollie Schmidt's six children.
Upon returning to the U.S. at the close of World War II, a high school classmate of Tillie's brother made a point to renew his friendship with Tillie. A week later, Bob McCroskey proposed. The couple was married on February 10, 1946, and later had three children, Bob, Carolyn, and Melanie.
Bob and Tillie felt called to missions and were assigned as missionaries to the Philippines in 1956. They served the church for 37 years, working primarily in evangelism and church planting activities. They served in various parts of the Philippines, including Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and the Southern Tagalog area. Bob was elected district superintendent in the Philippines in 1963. Tillie was particularly known for her creative ministries with children through storyboards and flannel graphs.
The McCroskeys also served the church in Hong Kong and Indonesia.
Tillie was preceded in death by two younger brothers, Ron and Ray. She was also preceded by her husband, Bob, in 2008. They were married 63 years. She is survived by one brother, Milford (Lois) of Clinton, Missouri; two sisters, Alma, of San Antonio, Texas, and Jane (Aaron) of Fredonia, Kansas; three children, Bob Jr. (Rosa) of Bethany, Carolyn Rowe of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Melanie Hykes (Bill) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Kim Anderson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Traci Kindred (Torrance) of Seattle, Washington, Aimee Doss (Robert) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Kara McCroskey of Austin, Texas, Kent McCroskey (Aimee) of Bartow, Florida; and 12 great-grandchildren, Mychajlo and Samuel Doss of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Josiah, Levi, Sarah, Hope, Eden, and Jesse Kindred of Seattle, Washington; Connelley, Campbell, Coleson, and Collier McCroskey of Bartow, Florida.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 21 at 2 p.m. at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene with interment in Bethany Cemetery.
The children would like to honor their mother's memory by establishing a memorial in her name. The memorial will be used to help defray the medical expenses of Pastor Agus, a Nazarene pastor serving in Indonesia.
Contributions may be made to Bethany First Church of the Nazarene, marked Tillie McCroskey.
The Church of the Nazarene's Asia-Pacific Region extends heartfelt appreciation to the McCroskeys for their sacrificial service to the growth of the church in Asia. Prayer is requested for the family.--Church of the Nazarene Asia-Pacific Region

EurasiaParis churches feed the hungry
For the past six years, Pastor José Monteiro and volunteers from four Nazarene congregations in Paris have been reaching out to the many hungry people who populate one of Europe's most sophisticated cities.
As Monteiro told me, "this is the best way we've found to connect with people in Paris."
In 2008, Monteiro started a service project with the teens of his church: distributing hot meals one day a week in their congregation's neighborhood, the 18th arrondisement of Paris. The 18th has a high concentration of immigrants and poverty. Since its inception in 2008, this ministry has grown to the point where food is given away six days a week, even utilizing two different buildings on Saturdays. While Monteiro and church member Soeurette Villasson oversee the ministry, Monteiro commented that the 30 or so volunteers are so committed and organized that the ministry runs smoothly without much input from the two leaders. Volunteers come from Paris First Church, Paris Second Church, Paris Third Church, and the Church of the Nazarene in Paris 14ème.

President's Honors Gala benefits student scholarships at MNU
The President's Honors Gala, MidAmerica Nazarene University's premier annual fundraising event to benefit student scholarships, is set for April 11 at 6:30 p.m. in Cook Center on the university's Olathe Campus. In its first two years, generous donors contributed more than $750,000 through sponsorships, auction purchases, and attendance. The sold-out event had visitors from as far as the Netherlands in addition to strong participation in its live webcast. The annual meeting of the Wesleyan Theological Society was held immediately following the conference, also on the NNU campus.
This year's Wesley Center Conference was themed "Wesley Talks: Ministry & Culture" and used four popular TED Talks as a springboard for discussion in the context of Christian faith and a Wesleyan theological heritage. TED Talks are brief presentations of no more than 18 minutes centered on an "idea worth spreading," which is a concept Christians have embraced for two millennia.
The theme of the Wesley Theological Society annual meeting was "Atonement in the Wesleyan Tradition."
Wesleyan-Holiness scholars from around the globe explored key themes of atonement, including keynote presentations by New Testament scholar Ben Witherington III of Asbury Theological Seminary and theologian and NNU alumnus Randy Maddox of Duke Divinity School.
Conference DVDs are available for purchase through the NNU Wesley Center at nnu.edu/wesleyconf.
NNU's 2015 Wesley Center Conference is titled "Holy Wit: On Mirth As It Is In Heaven." It will look at the interface of faith and humor. The 2015 conference will take place at College Church of the Nazarene adjacent to the NNU campus in Nampa, Idaho, and is slated for Thursday and Friday, February 26-27, 2015.--Northwest Nazarene University

PLNU students celebrate tuition freedomPoint Loma Nazarene University students celebrated the completion of 75 percent of the school year on March 19. More than just a benchmark toward summer break, this celebration marks the fact that the remaining 25 percent of the school year is covered by gifts from alumni, donors, churches, corporations, foundations, and other sources.
The Alumni Association established Tuition Freedom Day in 2008. This year, the university partnered with the on-campus Student Senate and Associated Student Body, Sodexo, and Bartell Hotels to host the sixth annual event. This celebration aims to increase awareness of gifts given to support PLNU students and also to provide an opportunity for students to express their gratitude. After chapel, students can enjoy coffee and
pastries in the Activities and Recreation Center while writing thank you notes to alumni, churches, corporations, foundations, and other donors who have contributed to their education.
In 2013, 518 thank you notes were written by students during Tuition Freedom Day. This year the Alumni Office hopes to cross the 600 mark.
"Whether or not we realized it, each one of us who attended this university was helped by others who gave to subsidize the cost of our education," said Sheryl Smee, executive director of Alumni Relations at PLNU. "This has become an annual event to highlight the difference made in students' lives, through generous alumni support, and the impact we can make in the lives of countless future students through our faithful giving."
